Features live Xmas-type performances by the likes of the Nields (Merry Xmas Mr. Jones), Hugh Blumenfeld, Ratsy, Ilene Weiss, etc. Plus an original version of "The Christians and the Pagans" by Dar from before she solidified the lyrics...very cool. It's on their website, which moves around frequently, but if anyone is interested in this I can look it up for them. $10 plus S+H, I think. Really rare, but sooo good. :) BTW, Ratsy's homepage says she's got a new CD out that is a compilation of her songs from the years when she used to sing in the Boston subway. Could be interesting, although I haven't heard it. Again, if folks want the page address, I can look it up, but it's 3:30 am. - --Kay Carolyn Andre wrote: >The '97 sampler has 18 tracks on it, and is either free with any order from >Prime CD or $5+ $2 shipping. > http://www.primecd.com/cuts97.htm > >lists the tracks & has sound samples of all 18 of the cuts. > >(just to entice more of that ecto wallet syndrome ....) > >(Margo has a new album which should be coming out in June, btw) > >Course, my current favourite Prime "cut" is the Big League Babe - The >Christine Lavin Tribute Album Part 2, which was just released last week. >Great selection of artists, some of whom I think are ecto-ish (I'm still >kinda slow on that identification ) ... including a Dar Williams/Hugh >Blumenfeld duet, Dee Carstensen, Patty Larkin, Debi Smith, Buddy Mondlock >.... Lilith founder Sarah McLachlan joined Cole, Missy, Meredith Brooks, Liz Phair and other Lilith performers to announce plans for this summer's edition of the tour at a press conference in Los Angeles on Thursday. The artists unveiled a rotating roster of acts that includes Natalie Merchant, Mary Lou Lord, Tracy Bonham, Imani Coppola, Morcheeba, Bonnie Raitt, Luscious Jackson, Beth Orton, Mono, Victoria Williams, the Indigo Girls, Emmylou Harris, Cowboy Junkies, Joan Osborne, Sinead O'Connor, Lisa Loeb, Chantal Kreviazuk, Letters To Cleo, and many others. Fans may also get a glimpse of Lilith Fair comic Cinder Calhoun, or at least the woman who plays her on TV. Anna Gasteyer, the comic who brought the politically correct character to "Saturday Night Live" will be appearing on the tour's Village Stage on three Lilith dates. McLachlan mapped out 57 North American dates for the tour, kicking off on June 19 in Portland, Oregon and wrapping up on August 31 in Vancouver, BC. McLachlan also announced that this year's Lilith Fair will once again benefit select non-profit organizations, including the Breast Cancer Fund; the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network; LIFEbeat; and Planned Parenthood. I only knew her from her few songs on the >first Bitchin Babes disc, which are fun, but not mind-boggling. Fruit, on >the other hand, is full of some really spectacular stuff. It's so much >denser and complex than I expected. Are her other albums like this? The short answer: Not so much. :) Another short answer: If you like "Perishable Fruit", you'd probably like "Angels Running" and "Strangers World". A longer answer: Patty's first two albums, "Step Into the Light" (1985) and "I'm Fine" (1987), are fairly standard folk/rock, I think, although it's obvious from the beginning that Patty is a pretty exceptional songwriter with a slightly twisted sense of humour. After this came her phenomenal live folk album, "Live in the Square" (1990), and a couple more folk/rock/pop albums, "Tango" (1991) and "Angels Running" (1993). Then "Strangers World" (1995) which I think is Patty's most ecto-y album to date, with a lot of aural texturing and ambience that wasn't present in a lot of Patty's earlier work, although "Angels Running" did start tending in that direction a little bit... Then last year came "Perishable Fruit", which is another amazing album - hard to categorise but definitely wonderful stuff. "Brazil" and "Wolf at the Door" are two of the best songs, ever. And a change of topic: I remembered a little more about the Dar Williams/Lucy Kaplansky/ Richard Shindell thing. There'll probably be an REM cover on the album - there was a poll on the dar-list awhile back about which song we'd like to see them do. And, I would be very very surprised if a version of Richard Shindell's song "The Ballad of Mary Magdalene" *weren't* on there... I mean, if it means I actually get to see her, great, I'll go. But I'd hate to think the only chance I'd get to see her would be doing a short 5 or 6 song set at a huge outdoor amphitheater with a bunch of people who'd probably never heard of her, since she hasn't had any regular MTV airplay in over 10 years. But then, the thought of her doing some duets with the likes of Sarah would be pretty nice. Like I said, if she does it, I'd go--but I'd much rather see her by herself in a nice concert hall. Whoa. Deja vu. I missed the first reference to Botti, but saw the quote in meth's message and thought, "Hmm. I've seen that name recently." A quick check of the liner notes I was perusing earlier this week shows that he plays on Marc Cohn's new album...trumpet on one track, and flugelhorn on another ("Olana", which is one of the coolest lyrics I've seen in a while; it's about a house, and several lines of the song are from the point of view of the house!) Oh, and to bring Cohn back around further to ecto-ish-ness, most of the tracks on the new disc were mixed by Kevin Killen (for you non KaTe lovers out there, he mixed _The Sensual World_. Of course, there are plenty of people who thought his work on that album was a disaster, so maybe I shouldn't be mentioning it... ;-) > I don't know. Maybe there's some weird stereotype out there that says >that guitar/bass/stick gods can't be adequately worshipped by females. I'd say I would touch this one with a 10 (20, 30) foot *pole*, but frankly, I can't resist: Well, I guess it depends on the women as to whether or not they can adequately worship stick gods... jeff np: _Brighten the Corners_, Pavement ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Apr 1998 22:11:28 -0500 (EST) From: The Spanglemaker Subject: Please help me identify an artist! Hi everyone - At the beginning of tonight's episode of "Millenium," there was an incredible song that I must track down. They played most of it, but I didn't catch too many lyrics. It was a female voice, very low, and it reminded me of Siouxsie. One line was "She's dancing barefoot," and "benediction" was also mentioned. I also think near the end of it there were lines about God, and possibly a prayer recited, but it was hard to tell because they were reciting a prayer on the show at the same time they were playing the music. I'm dying to know who this is - any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Kate ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Apr 1998 21:02:47 -0700 From: "Neil K. They played in completely different places. BLUE at the Birchmere and Orion Studios, and Projekt Two at 9:30 Club and Bohagers. The next day I shuffled to Building the Colossus in my car, and Torn's stuff just completely exploded out of the mix. It seemed so much more obvious to me after seeing him perform his alchemy live. > >Nice album :) I had Andy Stochansky's album in my car the other day. > > How is that? I keep forgetting to pick it up at Ani shows. It hasn't made much of an impression, though I also haven't listened too much. I picked it up at an ani show about a year ago and have only listened to it a few times. Now that it's found its way into my car, it'll probably get heard a bit more. The one song that struck me sounds like an Acadie-era Daniel Lanois outake, which is a very good thing. Lot's of ecto-friendly guests on it too. I'll comment on it again in a few weeks when it cycles out of my car. > Go by what Sherlyn said, if you want the definitive guide. :) But of course. (Thanks Sherlyn!) Way cool. yeah yeah yeah! When we were running that thread about transcendent musical moments, that was gonna be one of my choices, but i never came up with a list :/ When i first saw that happen at my first Sarah concert in '94, i was floored. Sadly, the FTE Live video doesn't capture the effect because the camera view they use has the camera pulling back as the swoops happen, so you don't get the curtain of lights flashing across the audience...I think the problem with the effect now is that when it's used (both at Lilith and on the Surfacing tour), the whole place isn't pitch black so it isn't as impressive... > footah noted: > > >i have two categories: cds-and-vinyl-in-the-shelves, and > >cds-and-vinyl-stacked-on-the-floor. > > Heh.
