And now there is another big reason to think she is annoying. Apparently she and cheese-o-licious action star JEAN CLAUDE VAN DAMME have fallen madly in love. Ugh. Van Damme reportedly asked to be introduced to the singer at Hollywood's trendy SKY BAR earlier this year, and the pair have been inseparable ever since. A friend says, "It was love at first sight - the minute he shook her hand he was smitten." Jewel has even re-arranged her concert dates around his hectic filming schedule so that they can spend more time together. However Van Damme, currently filming INFERNO, has to get himself clear of his nasty court battle before he can enjoy his new love. He faces showdown in court with his estranged wife DARCY later this year. She alleges he beat and abused her during wild drug and alcohol binges and is claiming a huge slice of his fortune. The Belgian hunk also faces a breach of contract lawsuit filed by his former martial arts teacher, who says he is owed money promised to him by Van Damme. ====================================================================== David Dixon (D^2) dixon@qt.tn.tudelft.nl Department of Applied Physics, Delft University of Technology TWBM: "Thorough physicists dot all their i's and cross all their h's." ====================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Apr 1998 16:03:45 EDT From: Paul2k Subject: Re: Jewel item Hmm...i'm pretty sure that this was just a rumor and that there is no truth whatsoever behind it. I'm no longer on the jewel list, but i believe Mike Connell, the manager of that list, sent out a note to the jewel, jewel-digest, and jewel-news lists that this was a total fabrication. So, David, that's one LESS reason to hate jewel ;) I got a 4-song promo of Emma Townshend from work and i really like it...reminds me of Rebecca Timmons and a little Chantal more than Tori...one of the songs on it uses text from some poet or author who's copyright is held by Amherst College :) I really like Emma's voice...it doesn't have a pop- singer's quality to it...i can't quite place it, but it sounds like it would be more at home in a musical... Speaking of Tori, i played "Spark" the new single, on my radio show today...pretty good...definitely takes the band aspect into consideration more. That Dave Matthews single "Don't drink the water" is pretty darn good...powerfully catchy...i hate to say it and figure it's blaspheming, but the quality of the song and the backing vocals of alanis make me think of a alterny-late-90's version of a Peter Gabriel/Sinead O'Connor team- up...happily, alanis isn't annoying and her vocals are pretty subdued... i didn't know that Kate Bush did vocals on a Michael Kamen soundtrack. the soundtrack to Niagra Niagra (out today along with new Bonnie Raitt, new Beth Orton EP [i like it]) features songs from Patty Griffin, Cowboy Junkies, Martin Sexton (i know meth is jumping up and down for joy about THAT one *grin*), and others. It was one of those things got mentioned on love-hounds for years, until finally, one day (1993), we were graced with a decent CD of the _Brazil_ soundtrack which, miracle of miracles, actually contained the KaTe track. There were only 2 people ahead of me and we ended up getting row PP dead center. Meth if you're wondering, the EMI thing was for Borders' employees only, which with Joe being one was how we got invited. Came home with a ton of cd's anyway (new Bonnie Raitt, Buckethead, Jon and Vangelis, Robbie Robertson and many more). dave wrote after I wrote: >> Joe and I saw/spoke with Sarah M. and Lisa Loeb tuesday night at Oakdale >> (we didn't see any other ectophiles in attendance! where WERE you >> folks???) >> >> Sarah is as sweet and nice now as she was way back when... ;-) >> > >yeah, yeah.. but what about Lisa??? Geez getting to talk to her is harder than getting an audience with the Pope! But we managed! Sarah seemed genuinely happy to see us, but we really couldn't carry on a conversation like in the old days. Her every moment is scripted out for her and the meet-and-greet lasted no more than 10 minutes with 15-20 people all wanting to chat! Afterwards I spoke with Dave, roadie extroardinaire and he assured me that if we made the Buffalo and Rochester gigs we'd definitely have more time to speak with Sarah. So of course I took Friday off from work, left Joe home, and went with friends Troy and Phil on the 8-hour drive to Buffalo. Our first stop was a public appearance that Lisa was doing at a huge megamall in suburban Buffalo. We had to go because Troy works for Candies(sp?) shoes and since they were sponsoring her part of the tour Troy had to be there. Besides they were giving us the free tickets and backstage passes too! So have any of you ever been swallowed by a mob of 750 screaming teeny boppers before? How Lisa kept her cool I'll never know... She played a quick 2-song acoustic set (I Do and her new single what's-its-name) and then sat down for an hour of intense autographing. We scrammed out of there AQAP and headed right for the nearest bar for a few drinks. After the mall apperance we followed Lisa to a VH1 taping. Apparently they're running some program to raise money to buy instruments for kids in schools whose music programs have been cut. Noble cause and it was interesting to watch TV in the making. Plus we got to hear Lisa sing a few of the new things she's been writing! She should dump the band and go on the road solo! So after we checked in at our hotel we headed (starving) to the concert. Lisa and band came on promptly at 8:00pm and rocked the place (Marine Midland Arena, which held around 13-14,000 people)! A totally different set list than in Wallingford, she concentrated on only the upbeat, stadium-crowd-pleaser-type numbers. More enjoyable than expected and the crowd loved her. After Lisa's set we headed backstage to chat. I got to give her two pairs of antique eyeglasses from my collection and we got the usual autographed cds and posters etc... Then I spotted Sarah's roadie Dan and he said to just wait patiently......which we did....for 20 minutes....and then next thing we knew Sarah was onstage. The concert sucked. It reminded me of why I hate to go to arena shows... Lilith was just barely bearable at Jones Beach (if it was Sarah only it would have stunk)...and this show was proof of how poorly Sarah's music is served in that kind of environment. I NEVER thought I would EVER walk out of a Sarah show, but I did! The echoey acoustics, the screaming kids, Sarah and band's going-thru-the-motions performance all added up to YUCK! In fact it was so bad that when we found out that the next night in Rochester was at some huge war memorial, we decided to head back home early and do some outlet shopping on the way. So I guess the moral of the story is that things just don't stay the same for our favorite musicians when they get popular...My gut instinct was that Radio City was about as big a place as I could imagine Sarah playing in and I was right IMHO. All the criticisms Meth had of the show in CT I would totally agree with, even though that occasional flash of brilliance was still there (mostly on the older songs...). Path Of Thorns/Mary/Adia was a brilliant medley and Fear was the most gripping performance of it I'd ever heard, except for the one in Newport RI at the "In Their Own Words" show, several months before Fumbling came out. (Meth that's the time when Sarah and I went arm-in-arm to the bar to have a few rounds with John Prine and Rosie Flores...;-) OK enough already...I'm turning myself green with envy... ;-) Chuck But speaking of Radio City, anybody else going to see Radiohead/Spiritualized next week? np: Garmarna: Vittrad nr: Sheri Reynolds: A Gracious Plenty ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Apr 1998 00:19:15 -0400 (EDT) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: I am woman, hear me roar :-) On Tue, 7 Apr 1998, Mitchell A. I happened to catch one last night and it was a very pleasant surprise. The entire show was incredibly ectoish. Guest hosted by Holly Cole, it featured two of her videos, including a brand new one and some live footage from her Denver concert. It also had Sarah's Adia and another by Portishead that I didn't recognize. I know this show is a fairly local phenomenon, but is this something that other PBS stations do? Perhaps it might be worth checking them out again in the fairly near future if artists of this caliber and genre are making appearances on local television. Also, I don't know if any of our local shows are distributed beyond the single station, but I have also seen live performances by Patti Rothberg, and a guest host appearance by Jewel, so it might be an idea to look for something from KBDI TV in Denver, Colorado for those of you with connections.
