I've seen her the 2nd time now (last 4 years ago), and looking back the current concert was a bit disappointing. The show sounded too much like the records, and the excellent musicians hardly got a chance to show what they are capable of. Guess Loreena doesn't call them "my idling Porsche's" for nothing. So, yes, it was an enjoyable concert, but I'll probably stick to the records for the next 4 years. Keep on listening... ...Klaus ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Apr 1998 04:13:14 -0100 From: hickory Subject: Martha Wainwright Just wanted to mention, in case it had not been noted before, that Martha Wainwright, the daughter of Kate McGarrigle & Loudon Wainwright will be doing a show at The Living Room this Sunday, April 5 around 10pm (10:30 realistically).. No cover. The Living Room is at 84 Stanton Street (at Allen) in Manhattan.. She is an incredible singer and writes some wonderful songs. She will also be accompanying her brother Rufus at his gig this Friday at Fez.. His lush, orchestral record comes out on Dreamworks in May. They hail from Montreal, and this is a rare chance to hear Martha do a whole set, as she has mostly been doing guest slots during Rufus shows of late.. __________ Nicholas Hill ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Apr 1998 07:42:30 EST From: Riphug Subject: Re: Mary Chapin Carpenter info request Whew! Yes, I've picked up a copy of ET's debut album "Winterland". It's pretty good IMHO. The Tori influence is to my ears the most prominent - lots of busy piano and stream of conscientiousness lyrics - although it does venture into more ambient areas at times. Geoff Parks PS Emma Townshend is an alumna of Kings College, Cambridge, the world famous chapel of which can just be discerned on the cover art of Happy's "The Keep", which features the bridge of Clare College. ------------------------------ Date: 2 Apr 1998 20:50:58 +0000 From: Tim.Cook@Swift.Com (Tim Cook) Subject: Completely non-ecto but... Well, I only vaguely remember that cartoon, but a quick web search turned up the contestants. Check http://www.dur.ac.uk/~d64txn/wacky.html for a list and pictures. The ones I see listed are Dick Dastardly and Mutley, the Slagg Brothers (Rock and Gravel), the Gruesome Twosome, Prof. Pat Pending, The Red Max, Penelope Pitstop, Sarge and Pvt. Pinkley, the Anthill Mob, Luke and Blubber Bear, Peter Perfect, and Rufus Ruffcat and Sawtooth. Actually, as I look at the page, it's all starting to come back to me... You can find most anything on the web :) Owen ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Apr 1998 18:09:36 -0600 (CST) From: Michael Curry Subject: Tori club tour ticket sale info (all shows) - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 2 Apr 1998 15:49:37 -0800 From: violet@torithoughts.org Subject: FLASH! I checked out one of her CD's from the library = (an excellent source of music, when available, if you're unsure about an = album). This was the album with "I Feel Lucky" and what I thought was a = really cool version of what I believe to be a Dire Straits tune ,"The = Bug".=20 She's classified for the most part as a country music artist, but = like most really interesting musicians, she overlaps genres and is not = limited to C&W. "I Feel Lucky" doesn't seem country at all, more = blues/rock. "The Bug" is a hybrid of blues with a dash of country. All = in all, I remember liking the album a lot. I never got around to buying = it, but I would recommend it to others (kinda weird, huh?). There are a = lot of folk sounds to be had here. She is in my opinion very = ecto-friendly. Some of the songs are very well written stories. I like = to compare her a little bit to Bonnie Raitt, not only in style, but in = the way that it's difficuly to categorize the music.
