She really hit it off with the Marley family. Jimmy Marley (Bob's 1st cousin & talented musician in his own right) & Lisa now plan on working together sometime soon. From their message (below), you'll see they had quite the mystical & spiritual experience! Lisa's manager, Sandy Troy (who some Deadheads might recognize as the author of the books "Captain Trips" & "One More Saturday Night") sent me this enjoyable "stream of consciousness" synopsis of their experiences this past weekend that I'd like to share with you. Make a point to check out Lisa on several of the upcoming Steve Poltz gigs. She's destined for big things! Enjoy! MrBB Date: Monday, March 30, 1998 10:31:53 AM From: Sandy Troy & Lisa Sanders Subj: Lisa Sanders Meets The Marleys To: MrBB Isn't life fine. Leaving L.A. at midnite. Taking the red-eye to Miami for a tropical respite. Jet-lagged upon arrival but ecstatic at the unfolding possibilities. Breakfast at the News Cafe in South Beach watching the world go by. 'Twas a Bloody Mary kind of morning. Lisa and I are having a blast in Florida! Lisa met the Marleys at the house where Bob Marley lived with "Mother B" (Bob's mother)' and she had the opportunity to play Bob Marley's guitar. What an amazing trip! Gold records dripping from the walls. I walk down the beach, the ocean so blue as is the sky. Spotted a Jewel in the sand and she sang to me like an angel. And the sun beat down and there's a smile on my face. She touched my heart in the deepest place. Traveling down the road of life to meet destiny. Our guide of the hour, a kind and gentle soul, who opens the door to the magic garden. The mystery of life. Did I call you in the middle of the night? (-- From Lisa's song entitled "Jewel") We arrive in a purple haze of bewilderment as the gates of paradise open for all to see. The Garden of Eden awaits us as we walk through the portal into the mystery. Life is funny that way. The holy man welcomes us to his Temple. Rastaman says: "Welcome lovely one." She smiles and says "It's good to be home." He brings out a snow white guitar and she knows every little thing in the world is alright. She sings "I spotted a Jewel in the sand and she sang to me and it touches me in the deepest place. The next thing I knew we were carried away into the jungle, with singing all around us. The sun beat down and there's a smile on my face. In my dreams did I cry out, did I call you, did we sing songs so dear to me that touch me in the deepest place?" There were dreams in my head! The angel flies and "Isn't Life Fine." The holy man chants that "He" is here now! The bird of paradise joins me in song. "One World, One Love!"-Bob Marley It is only then that we acknowledge the magic that IS within our reach. The African Princess meets the Prophet. This was the first concert in years Bel Canto have had here in their home town. (The fact that Bel Canto's hometown is also mine, probably explains explains why I haven't really bothered to start listening to them until now :-) The audience counted around 500, meaning the concert was sold out. Now, I don't know Bel Canto's work that well (I've only recently bought one of their CDs - their newest one, _Rush_), so when it comes to the names of the songs they played, I can only refer to the GIF of the scanned-in copy of the setlist (+ my ticket :-), which can be accessed from . For those of you who cannot (or don't want to) download the GIF, I have kindly typed it in here :-) - the titles are exactly as they appear on the list: "DEWY FIELDS/ZENITH/UNICORN/W-WILL/HEAVEN/SHIMMER/BIRDS/ALL I WANT.....*/WHITE OUT/PARADISE/IDLY*/BOMBAY/RUMOUR/DIDN'T U KNOW IT?/IMAGES/RUSH*/SPIDER/SUN*" The songs marked * are from _Rush_, and the full titles of the two first ones are _ALL I WANT TO DO_ and _IDLY I DE-ICE_. The three last songs were the encores. Unfortunately, I didn't bring a camera to the concert, so I have no pictures of Anneli Drecker or the band. However, I promise I'll bring a camera the next time! Anneli Drecker was fun and full of life on stage, and it was obvious that she enjoyed being back home again. She wore a bluish blouse, a black skirt (decorated with something that resembled a sci-fi cartoon spaceship :-), and blue shoes with white soles (approximately size 35-36, european sizes). A friend of mine told me before the concert that she wore wonderfully bright red shoelaces on their previous concert in Tromsø, so we both had quite high expectations as to what colour they would be this time :-). But alas, her shoelaces turned out to be just plain white, which disappointed both me and my friend a little :-( Conclusion: In spite of almost having my guts squeezed out right in front of the stage by an audience packed denser than sardines, it was a very nice concert :-) aLViN - -- | | | ----------------------------------------------------- | | The great tragedy of Science - the slaying of a | | beautiful hypothesis by an ugly fact. -- T. There are several big differences between TL's EC contributions and JS's Barney contributions. Tom had a history of writing educational/info-based songs for commercial enterprises (That Was the Year That Was); Jane's Barney turn is a 180 degree twist for an artist who specializes in being unique and exploring different musical genres. Also, EC was always much more complex than met the eye (in the same way 'Seasame Street' and 'The Simpsons' are meant for both children and adults). Barney is unabashedly simplistic, made for children and barely tolerated by parents. Just because something's not meant for adults, and is enjoyed only by children, doesn't mean it's not worth doing. Does everything have to have an extra layer making it palatable for adults? I've never seen Barney, myself - but I have heard (from a friend who teaches very young children ages 4 and up) that kids that age LOVE Barney. Little kids really eat up all that sappy unconditional love stuff. For the same reason, they also love Mr. Rogers, another kids show that gets bashed a lot by the hip. But I guess hipness really isn't that important to little kids. Tom had a history of writing > educational/info-based songs for commercial enterprises (That Was the > Year That Was) Just to keep the record straight: Tom Lehrer made his biggest splash in the 50s, starting with a homemade recording of some parody songs that he wrote and recorded for about $20, and followed up with some commercially available tunes building on his unexpected success. The TW3 stuff didn't happen till many years after he had established himself as an independent songwriter; however, much of his work was hard to locate until TW3's success caused it to be re-released. By far the majority of TL's songs were social commentary with no commercial application (except that he was able to make a buck by selling the records :-) Interestingly, except for his short resurgence in the 60s writing for TW3, Tom has spent virtually his entire life teaching (usually math) at the college level. - -- | Greg Dunn | They preach that I should save | | GregDunn@aol.com | the world and pray that I won't | | gregdunn@indy.net | do a better job of it. | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn | Dar Williams | ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Mar 1998 17:02:26 -0500 (EST) From: Heidi Heller Subject: Re: please resend tori dates I think she's appearing at the 9:30 on 4/22 -- or that's what I hope! I was going to respond to this anyway, as someone who finds Puff Daddy pretty unbearable, but isn't opposed to rap. In the semi-ecto world, Neneh Cherry's stuff is great. I'd recommend her first disc too (Buffalo Stance) as a wonderful melding of rap with R&B. You can probably pick up a ton of rap "clasics" pretty cheap, if you are curious. Any of the classic Public Enemy discs will give you a dense, dizzying soundscape (Yo, Bum Rush THe SHow, It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back, and Fear of a Black Planet), De La Soul's semi-conceptual flower power 3 Feet High and rising is a trippy fun outing, Pharcyde's Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde is pretty much what the title implies. Um, The Roots have been doing rap with a live band for a number of years now, though I haven't heard any of it. Oh, and Spearhead really bowled me over when I got Chocalate Supa Highway last summer (Killer killer "duet" with Joan Osbourne). I could probably come up with a half dozen more rap albums I like, though I'm not sure there is much interest :) I'd recommend all of the above though, with slight warnings on PE getting into some political claims that some might find offensive, and Pharcyde occasionally got a bit rude too, in a cartoony sort of way. Oh, and Digital Underground was another oddball outfit that caught my fancy with Sex Packets.
