Maybe, but it's a good sign that people have seen her album in stores. I've seen it in Sound Garden here in Baltimore, which doesn't have a single Happy disc in stock, so perhaps when the Samson release comes out that will be rectified. I found McKinley's self-titled debut in the throw away bins there a few weeks ago. But it seems to be an entirely different self titled debut than the one you bought :) It came out in 1995 on Burnside Records, was produced by Steve Hale, doesn't have David Torn on it, or the Prince cover. neal still playing: Van Morrison - The Healing Game ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 03:00:19 -0500 (EST) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friends... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ******************** Alan Sodoma (ajs@fermat.cci.com) ********************* ****************** Richard Konrad (rkonrad@javanet.com) ******************* *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Alan Sodoma Thu March 18 1965 LuckyLurker Richard Konrad Sat March 18 1944 Pisces Barry Wong Thu March 19 1970 Merlin Graham Dombkins Fri March 19 1965 Pisces Ian Young Wed March 19 1969 Squiggol Jeff Wasilko Wed March 19 1969 Pisces Geoff Carre Sat March 20 1954 Pisces John Stewart Sat March 21 1970 Aries Bob Brown Thu March 22 1951 Ham Valerie Nozick Thu March 25 1971 Aries Tom Proven Sat March 27 1971 P.T. I'd be intrigued to see them, but Oasis at the Patriot Center wasn't the time or place. I like the album. It's pretty varied. I don't think Brimful of Asha is particularly indicitive, as I'm not sure any single song gives you a real feel. There are a few catchy pop gems like that, but also some weird electronica stuff, and a cover of the Beatles Norwegian Wood, heavy on the sitars and in Hindi! > The best songs are "Sleep on the Left Side," which has a really catchy > synth sound to it When I first popped in the album, that song sounded so familiar to me. Not that I'd heard it before, but it really reminded me of someone. I was at a friends house, and they said, just go through your collection and figure it out. Sure, that'll take all week. But when they pointed out how fast I could eliminate most choices, I decided to give it a try. Kate Bush? I don't think so. Laibach? Probably not. Poi Dog Pondering? Hmmmm, sure enough, that's what I was thinking of. Not that they sound much like PDP, but they had sort of the same vibe, though in a differnt style. (SOrta like The Nields used to make me think of old 10K Maniacs, in spirit, not sound. Yeah, right, whatever.) Anyway, I do think the Cornershop guy has a voice very similar to PDP's. Gee, did that help at all? > I never listen to "Brimful of Asha" because I'm sick to death of it. I never have that problem. Just don't listen to the radio so much. I've never heard Asha on the radio. In fact, I spent a week in this hotel in Redondo Beach, and the only time I heard music (outside of a few tapes I brought), was in the bathroom, where I heard for the first time (finally) the unmistakable strains of Loreena, so I imagine it was the overplayed Mummer's Dance. And one of these days I'll actually hear Paula Cole's Cowboy song :) Neal np: Van Morrison - The Healing Game ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 07:51:13 -0500 From: Richard Subject: Re: holly/sarah/jane on Canuck television > >Holly Cole, Sarah McLachlan and Jane Siberry perform classic jazz and blues > > songs. (ie: Moses Znaimer's crew) I think it uses some of the American Bravo's programming but also does a bit of its own original content. - Neil K. - -- t e l a computer consulting + design * Vancouver, BC, Canada phone: (604) 254-1002 * email: tela@tela.bc.ca web: http://www.tela.bc.ca/tela/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 15:04:01 -0500 (EST) From: isometric plaything Subject: Nebraska and KC music?? Ours isn't just Bravo ... it's Bravo! :-) Seriously though the Canadian one is based right here in rainy Toronto and is a sister station to MuchMusic and CityTV. One of them came from Alan Manuel @ CDuctive, and corrected me on the soundalike issue: >A final point on "(no soundalike covers, mercifully)" in your review of SSB >- I actually ordered a complete set of covers from Madacy, including: >"Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)", "Gangsta's Paradise", "100% Pure Love", etc. >These tracks are not specifically marked as covers (they say "Countdown >Dance Masters"), so someone less familiar with them might not realize >he/she is not getting US3, Coolio, Crystal Waters, etc. And currently, >their "BOOM Picks" page includes: " Cover to Cover Classics - Classic tunes >from The Grateful Dead, Prince, Jimi Hendrix, and more, covered by other >bands in their own unique styles. " ...which teaches me to _really_ delve into a site, and not just skim around my fave sounds. Mea culpa. I am also reminded of a story some years ago...it seems that the people at Viacom's Blockbuster Entertainment wanted to launch a custom CD service themselves - which got a prompt "thumbs down" from the majors. (One of them, MCA - now Universal - was supposedly formulating its own plans - and, I suspect, for its own limited catalogue only.) And then there was the Personics System - which became Warner Custom Music - victimized, I am certain, by their own high prices...for custom cassettes, no less. So there's a lot to learn from. Another thought for all three firms to consider: since we're currently allowed to conjure up our own custom CD titles, would a choice of artwork be too far behind? Advances in color ink-jet technology (look at Alps' "Micro-Dry" color printer MD.1000) would certainly make such a move feasible. Further down the line, if entire albums from indie artists or specially-licenced projects that would not be money makers in conventional stores (Tower e.g.) become availible from the custom CD makers (and I mean _really_ special items... such as an authorized "live" show from, say, Happy Rhodes, or the music scores to Japanimation movies such as _Ghost in the Shell_), it would be little or no problem to store the artwork (for the CD insert and tray card) on hard drives until requested... Talk about something approaching a paradigm shift. More to think about. To our guests - may I suggest that you add a few Internet mail lists (like Ecto) to your cyberspace diets? You might pick up a few ideas for future catalogue building... :-) Perhaps we all could also toss them a few URLs...?
