This Saturday March 14th from 10am to 5pm at Rounder Records in Cambridge MA will be a music "flea-market" to raise money for the First Annual Boston Folk Festival. I know this sounds like a small neighborhood thing but that couldn't be farther from the truth. I just talked with the head organizer and this sale will be amazing. They have had donations from radio station, the general public, and four different record companies including Rounder records. As of Tuesday they had over 16,000 total items. They will be selling records, Tapes, and CDs, videos, and books. Prices are as follows Records $2 Tapes $3 and below Used Cds $4 and below New Cds $6 So if you can come down to Rounder Records at 29 Camp St. in Cambridge MA, and save a bundle on CDs while helping out a growing music festival. Hope all are doing well. I tried to customize a seperate post for Ecto & Jewel lists. Didn't realize I sent both here...Anyway, here's another post I just sent to the Jewel lists with an update about her soon to be published poetry book: Several people have privately emailed me about the title of Jewel's upcoming poetry book. Bibi does have the correct spelling on the website. It is called "A Night Without Armour". (Many seem to think its supposed to be "A Knight Without Armour". Must be a Xena Warrior Princess influence, hehehe.....) As those familiar with Jewel already know, her poetry tends to be much more autobiographical & personal than her song lyrics. This book is now scheduled to hit USA stores on May 10th, 1998. It's published by Harper-Collins & contains over 100 of Jewel's poems. I'm not aware of non-USA availability at this time, but I'm sure it can easily be ordered from any reliable bookstore worldwide after that date. I'll post the ISBN # when its been assigned one. I haven't that info just yet. Interesting performer too; he has a hollow wooden box that he stands on so he can accompany himself with foot thumping. I saw him twice last year, strange as it might seem coming from a Canuck. I've even seen his CD around used. I wonder if he was doing an extended stand in Toronto or something? >Which reminds me... In it she talks about the songs and their ties to her recent separation from Alain, 10c Wings, and her songwriting in general. I tried to find a website for the magazine but didn't see it. I could possibly pick up a few extra copies and send just the article out (the magazine is too huge), but I don't know. When I get home I'll type the whole article out and send it, it's just too long to do that from here, when I'm on a laptop and only have a few minutes to check my mail. Jonatha will be at the Purple Onion on March 17th (Vancouver). The set was to begin at noon; needing a break from work, I took off at 11 and headed straight for the spacious and Ecto-friendly Borders Books, which has hosted such diverse talents as Mary Black, Tara MacLean, and Rory Block over the past year. As soon as I got inside, I spotted a handful of friends who had also chosen today to have something a little more substantive for lunch... After a round of greetings, I headed over to speak to the lady who was, after all, the reason for the event. Carrie greeted me with a spontaneous hug (bless her!) and we exchanged a few pleasantries before I bugged off to let her tune up for the concert. Carrie played unaccompanied, just her and the two guitars (not simultaneously!) through a small PA, and after a perfunctory introduction she launched right into a short set: The Moon Over Tucson This Long When One Door Closes The Length Of My Arms Just A Little Hand I Should've Known Better All from her new release. As usual, Carrie's live presence seems magically focused when she's performing solo, and her voice fuses with the guitar chords to generate a wave of emotion that must be witnessed to be appreciated. I often find myself forgetting to breathe during a particularly strong verse; I'm currently obsessing over the beauty of "Moon Over Tucson", one of her strongest songs yet. Suffice to say that if you're unmoved by her live solo performances, you're made of harder stuff than I. After her well-received set (a friend counted 70 people in attendance over the course of the hour) she hung around to autograph copies of the album and sell her new T-shirt. I was delighted to note that my name was included in the list of 150 or so names on the shirt design (it was in the middle of Marcia, Peter, Jan, and Bobby, but I'll take what I can get :) and that my friend Joe was also among the names. OK, it's not really a list of everyone she knows, but the shirt is pretty neat nonetheless. Carrie later joked that she planned to have a rotating name list and issue revised shirts so she could get everybody's names on them eventually... Naturally, I got in line to get my CDs signed and pick up a shirt. Carrie seemed pleased at the great local turnout and response to her fifth Rounder release; we chatted for a moment about Shawn Colvin's Grammy awards (Carrie single-handedly made us go out and buy Shawn's first album when she was relatively unknown) and other miscellaneous stuff. Carrie will be touring quite a bit in support of "My True Name", so if you're interested in hearing how she has grown musically over the last year, be sure to go see her live. You're guaranteed a sincere and rewarding show. It's great to see unpretentious musical honesty scoring more fans lately, isn't it? Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with Carrie or her record company; I'm just a longtime fan who wants more people to hear what she has to say... :-) - -- | Greg Dunn | I don't have low self-esteem. | | gregdunn@indy.net | It's a mistake.
