BTW, I was very concerned to note what Kevin said about the re-issues having changed art work, because as yet I don't have even one of the original CD albums (all my recordings are on tape from a kind friend who introduced me to the music) - so I guess it is time to look at my bank balance and send an order soonest! The Tori news was also gratefully received, I already have my tickets for her Wolverhampton (UK) show and am really looking forward to seeing her again - it seems like a long time. So much great new music to look forward to, so much going on - now, to make it perfect, we need to hear that Happy will be doing some dates in the UK (well, we can dream). Don't have much to add really, except for some people I saw that he didn't: I finally caught a full set of Lenni Jabour at Holy Joe's. One of a few local singer-songwriter-pianists who constantly suffers comparisons to Tori Amos, I found her style to be quite distinct from Tori's. My friends who were with me were enamoured of her but I myself while appreciating her talent found her shivery, weepy, 7-year-old kid-style vocal antics frankly annoying. The Pollyannas are a union of indie veterans whose collective credits include Weeping Tile, Lowest of the Low, the Waltons, the Blowseeds, and Lost and Profound. With a background like that you might expect them to have excellent technical skills as musicians and performers, and they didn't disappoint. Luckily they also happened to have some great fun, punchy pop rock songs, which all summed up to a really enjoyable show. Oh and a note about Scratching Post... very enjoyable. If you ever wanted to see a Spice Girl singing pop tunes and backed by Metallica, go see Scratching Post. Overall a solid, fun Canadian Music Week, but no absolutely mind-blowing shows like the one Bel Canto put on at North by Northeast last year. Oh well, I can't complain seeing as I didn't have to pay for my festival pass. :-) - ---------- Upcoming Toronto shows: I really shouldn't report on this until tomorrow's entertainment weeklies arrive, but there are a couple of excellent shows in the next couple of days. For Toronto area lurkers, amazing local band Red Autumn Fall play tomorrow (Thursday 12) at the Rivoli. If you decide to see this show, make sure you have good health insurance coverage first. This Saturday, Next Big Thing the Matthew Good Band rock the Horseshoe. Linda McRae, once a part of Spirit of the West, plays the Horseshoe on the 18th. - --------- Oh and one humourous note, as many people here know, Jewel's co-writer on "You Were Meant for Me" and "Adrian" was Steve Poltz of the San Diego band the Rugburns: Three years ago in March 1995, NOW magazine printed an article about Jewel following her first residency show at C'est What, entitled "Jewel Sparkles". Fastforward to March 1998, and lo, an article appears about Steve Poltz, entitled "Steve Poltz Now Sparkles Without Jewel." Their sound matured and while remaining "crunchy" they included also some mellow and quite lovely tunes. I don't think they ever managed to score any sort of distribution deals overseas for this CD. It is a venue of around 1000+ capacity, and it was sold out. It was also good to see that most people were there already for Dar who was the opening act. (Actually the first act was Jeff Lang, a guitar player I know nothing about. I only caught maybe the last 5 minutes of his performance, and he was very good actually). Then Dar took the stage. Alone with no band, which was fine with me. I don't know, maybe it's just the way she is, but she seemed incredibly nervous throughout her whole set, and she didn't need to be - she was very warmly received. Quite a few in the audience seemed familiar with her songs (bear in mind that it was her first visit to Australia, and it's not like she's been receiving any airplay or anything...). It seemed to pleasantly surprise her - at one point she commented on this and thanked 'her computer list'. The inrtoductions to the songs were quite amusing as well. "for us February is the middle of the winter, and snow is frozen rain" as she explained before starting on "February".... It wasn't a very long set, but she also did "When I was a boy", "Are you out there", "What do you hear...", "As cool as I am", "The Christians and the Pagans"... and another one I didn't know. I'm sure Sherlyn would, but it looks like I'm going to beat Sherlyn to this - Sherlyn, where were you ?!? I couldn't see you anywhere... Then it was Ani's turn. Again just her - no band. But she is a great performer! Her time on stage seemed to be divided about equally between tuning her guitar, chatting with the audience, and occasionally playing a song or two :) It was great. She is sloppy, she forgets words, chords, heck - whole songs, yet it all hangs together somehow, on the force of her personality and the sense of fun. I think she enjoyed herself that night, and if I may say so I think that we were an excellent audience. I've heard all the bad press her fans gathered, but it wasn't like that over here. We were enthusiastic between songs, and respectfully silent in the quieter moments... What did she sing? I can't remember most of the songs - I realised that apart from the songs I pick most often, I'm not really that familiar with her records... She did a couple from her new one, I remember also "Not a pretty girl", "Untouchable face" and "Letter to a john". She didn't play "Napolen" or "Willing to fight" - probably my two favourites, but all in all it was a great night! - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- No more imagination, there's role to be played go to work and be milked like cattle everyday Human stables hold the herd, office stalls filled with stock the system keeps you docile by promising the weekend off... He is definitely one of the most amazing guitar players I've ever seen - the last song he did was actually a cover of a Richard Thompson song, and he just blew the crowd away with his guitar virtuosity. Wow! He's really nice too - we talked to him for a little while after the show... > Then Dar took the stage. Alone with no band, which was fine with me. She was probably disconcerted with the crowd somewhat - not your usual folky audience! Especially since she'd spent the weekend at the very civilised Port Fairy Folk Festival, and played the previous night in front of an incredibly polite crowd in Melbourne. The inrtoductions to the songs were quite Haha... that was us! We sent some stuff backstage to her during Jeff Lang's set, occasioning (I presume) the public thank-you. Whoohoo. :) > It wasn't a very long set, but she also did "When I was a boy", "Are you > out there", "What do you hear...", "As cool as I am", "The Christians > and the Pagans"... and another one I didn't know. I'm sure Sherlyn would, Right yep, I know what it was. :) "Wilder Than Her", which is a Fred Eaglesmith song. > but it looks like I'm going to beat Sherlyn to this - Sherlyn, where were > you ?!? I couldn't see you anywhere... It was so dark and smoky! We were off to the side near the front for Jeff and Dar, then moved right back to the bar for Ani's set. And no, you didn't beat me, hee - I sent a review to the Dar list when I got home last night. :) > Then it was Ani's turn. Again just her - no band. But she is a great It was quite funny when Ani commented that there must be a lot of fantastic spare-ass (I think that's the term she used) American performances happening in Australia, "cos who could afford to bring their band??" Ha. > song or two :) It was great. She is sloppy, she forgets words, chords, > heck - whole songs, yet it all hangs together somehow, on the force of Which reminds me... Lisa Fitzgibbon (yes, Sydney singer/ songwriter Lisa Fitzgibbon) managed to get up on stage to sing with Ani on Sunday night in Port Fairy. It was hilarious... Ani couldn't remember the third verse to one of her songs (I forget which), and pulled a girl up from the audience to help her. The poor girl, upon realising that she was on a stage with Ani diFranco, promptly forgot all the words as well. Lisa Fitzgibbon then got up on stage and did a credible job of jamming with Ani... one of the funniest things I've ever seen. :) > What did she sing? I can't remember most of the songs - I realised that > apart from the songs I pick most often, I'm not really that familiar with > her records... She did a couple from her new one, I remember also "Not a > pretty girl", "Untouchable face" and "Letter to a john". She didn't play I remember also, um, "Fourth of July" and "Gravel", which was the opener. Not sure what else... > "Napolen" or "Willing to fight" - probably my two favourites, but all in > all it was a great night! I'd have to agree! I feel really sick today from all the cigarette smoke, and I must admit I did probably enjoy the show in Melbourne on Monday night more, but last night was excellent. BTW, did I mention that on Sunday in Port Fairy, Dar sang "Iowa" for me? Just thought I'd drop that into the conversation... :) sherlyn =-=-=-= Sherlyn Koo - sherlyn@fl.net.au =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= a+e=ig "And the best ones were the ones I got to keep as I grew strong, And the days that opened up until my whole life could belong. Hi all, I saw Holly Cole at Nita's Hideaway in Tempe, Arizona last night. It was my second time seeing her, and despite the rather shabby, roadhouse atmosphere, and rather small turnout (it was her first time playing Arizona), she put on a fabulous show. They were having an incredible amount of time. She was whopping and shouting and doing a lot more playing around vocally than the last time I saw her. Her voice sounded better than ever--I was amazed at her vocal control. The only disappointment I had was that the set list was almost identical to the time I'd seen her before--with the addition of a couple of more tracks from the latest album, but the versions were each different enough to be unique and memorable. Her version of Tea for Two is manic and amazing--they're an amazingly tight band. Overall a great show. Opening for her was Jeb Loy Nichols, who was alright--imagine Chris Isaak if he came from Missouri and lived in London for 12 years. Also opening was Kim Fox--it was advertised to be Melissa Ferrick, but Kim Fox showed up instead. She was pretty entertaining, though her songs were kind of silly. Some of the lyrics really had me cracking up. THe highlight of the evening was when she sang her single, I Wanna Be a Witch, acapella (sort-of) to the sound of her chopping a log (yes, actually chopping a small log with a small hatchet, right there on stage). Apparently her boyfriend had given her a record of prison songs, where the only musical accompaniment is guys rustling their chains or chopping wood. Anyway, she apparently found it inspirational. Overall, she had a great personality, but I wasn't that impressed with her voice or her songwriting. Her piano playing was pretty good--much better than her guitar playing. The best part of the evening was the ticket price--$7. Plus I got to arrive shortly before the show, and still find a seat front and center. Well, back to packing. Buying a house tomorrow and moving this weekend. Jeff Hanson ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Mar 1998 21:15:46 -0500 From: Jeff Wasilko Subject: Re: Holly Cole! Hmm. Another ectosyncronicity. Woj handed me Kim's CD two weekends ago while we were used CD shopping and it's been in heavy rotation in my cd changer. I was digging around at her web site, and apparently her inspiration was seeing suddenly, tammy! do a live show. > Well, back to packing. Buying a house tomorrow and moving this weekend. I believe that track is on her album. It was, as I've said, nice to see some sudden wordage! My regards also to Kevin! I would thank you all for your pleasant and welcoming attitude. The only other list that I have found this on is Marillions 'Freaks' list. Many lists are so bitchy and tetchy, and I will not mention which ones I'm referring to!! Thank you all once again, and I look forward with bated breath to HR's new release... - -- Geoff ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Mar 1998 22:54:17 EST From: Riphug Subject: "Songs For Friends & Lovers" mix tape Yep....I've been at it again.
