First, I joined Steve Ito and friends in Toronto this weekend to take in some of the many shows happening during Canadian Music Week. Friday, we were all on the same schedule, attending the same shows together. We caught a very small amount of Damn The Diva, but didn't feel inclined to see more so we moved onto Holy Joe's for Steve Poltz. The place was packed, meaning there were probably 100 people at the most jammed into this tiny room. In the audience were many music industry execs, as well as Kim Stockwood, a Canadian country-pop singer whose music I quite like. Steve charmed the audience with about a 45-minute set of songs from his forthcoming "One Left Shoe" CD. These were mostly folksy acoustic compositions centered around humorous life stories or clever love themes, as well as his version of Jewel's You Were Meant For Me, which Steve co-wrote. The crowd was totally attentive for both his songs and his stories. Next, we moved onto The Rivloli for a performance by high-energy Canadian pop-rock Barstool Prophets. These guys sound a lot like The Tragically Hip in their early days, and they pumped out a fantastic, sweaty powerhouse set. The night wrapped up with a walk to The 360 next door for Scratching Post. This band wins the award for most convoluted musical style of the weekend! The small, cute female singer delivers Juliana Hatfied or Letters To Cleo-style pop melodies with a pretty smile while her band thrashes out Metallica-type speed metal behind her. My initial reaction that this was total shit was quickly replaced by a fascination for what this band was all about. Despite laughing out loud at what I was witnessing, I found their songs to be well-written and performed. Her voice and the band's playing were also technically strong, and Steve and I agreed afterwards that we would definitely go see them again. Saturday our group split for most of the evening, with Steve's half going one direction and mine heading to C'est What to start the night with 3 performances. There, the night started with Amy Millan, who performed a solid set of country-pop songs with a 4-piece band to an uninterested sold-out audience of ~250 most of whom were there to see ex-Supertramp leader Roger Hodgeson later that night. Next up was a performer that topped my list for want-to-see, ex-Crash Vegas singer Michelle MacAdorey. Her set turned out to be a huge disappointment, mainly due to the fact that she performed some very slow, quiet material that failed to attract the crowd's attention, so the noise was unbearable. In another setting this probably would have been a good show, although I didn't hear anything that grabbed me like the songs Crash Vegas did as a band when they were still together. Next up was another performance by Steve Poltz. To be honest, I had debated whether to see his set since I expected a repeat performance of Friday's show, but my friends wanted to see him so we stayed. It turned out to be an excellent choice because Steve performed an almost completely different setlist with new and different stories between the songs. This one was a little higher energy than Friday's show and included some Rugburns material. Steve instantly won over the difficult crowd, and the place became electric as he drew them into some enthusiastic audience participation. The response was so good that Steve nearly lost it, laughing himself at the reaction to his Rugburns song "Tree Hugger." The combination of a bigger, more responsive crowd and a somewhat higher energy setlist made this a much better show than Friday's. Spotted in the crowd, besides more music execs and Supertramp fans, was Blue Rodeo guitarist Greg Keelor. Anyway, after Steve's set, my vote to stay for Roger Hodgeson was overruled again, and we headed out to meet Steve Ito and company at The Cameron for The Pollyannas. We arrived to find them already onstage, performing something none of us liked much, so we left Steve's group there and walked up to The Reverb for Canadian modern-rockers Treble Charger. Steve would later tell us we had walked in during the wrong song, and that The Pollyannas were actually quite good, but Treble Charger put on an impressive, packed, loud show that was taped by CBC Radio for an upcoming broadcast on their Saturday night Realtime program. My group split after that show, and I walked back to meet Steve and friends at The Cameron to wind down the night by Tory Cassis. Always highly recommended by Steve, Tory performed a solid set of quiet, introspective folk songs to a great audience. And that concluded the weekend for the live music, except for the performers Steve saw on Saturday that I can't comment on. Believe it or not, Steve and I actually found time on Saturday to catch a late matinee screening of the film The Sweet Hereafter. This is a Canadian film I have been wanting to see for months, but despite massive critical acclaim it has not been easy to find it playing outside of Toronto, so I convinced Steve to go come along even though he had only had four hours of sleep and could probably use some down time. Well, this movie turned out to be one of the best I have seen in a long time (Steve would later remark he was "riveted to the screen"), and it contained some surprise ecto music content. We were shocked to hear lead actress Sarah Polley deliver some gorgeous vocal performances throughout the film, and I was so impressed that I didn't leave Toronto before stopping at Sam The Record Man to buy the soundtrack. I wondered if the CD would live up to what we thought we heard in the film - I am happy to report it definitely does, and I have been playing it repeatedly since getting it! Sarah sings five songs, including a gorgeous cover of Jane Siberry's "One More Colour" and a fabulous interpretation of The Tragically Hip's "Courage." The latter is so reworked that despite being a massive Hip fan, it took me until the chorus to be able to place the song when it began playing in the film! The other three songs are co-written by Sarah Polley with score author Mychael Danna, and are very strong in their own right. Hard as it may be to believe, this soundtrack is worth buying on the strength of Sarah's performance on these 5 tracks alone. She delivers wispy, sweet, soaring falsetto vocals, and then drops down into a normal register that I think is slightly reminiscent of Innocence Mission, for lack of an accurate comparison. Sarah's songs on the soundtrack are backed by acoustic and steel guitar, bass and cello. As if this weren't enough, the rest of the score on this soundtrack consists of some haunting, unworldly music played on early instruments like lute and recorders that makes the CD a treat in its entirety. It turns out the film won Best Score at both the Genie and Chicago Film Critics awards. The movie also has two Oscar nominations which it will undoubtedly lose to Hollywood behemoth Titanic, Best Director and Best Screenplay. Still, it is a must-see if you can find it an art-house cinema in your area, and the soundtrack will be in my essential listening collection for some time! That's it! There hasn't been any news of late as we are on the cusp of a new release. I assure you that once her new album comes out, there will be extensive discussion on ecto. We do get bits and pieces of news from time to time. Often Kevin Bartlett of AG will post an update. There are numerous web sites with HTR info as well. One that I keep an eye on is www.samsonmusic.com, although it hasn't been updated since I first saw it. Samson is Happy's new label. The album is completed, mixed, and mastered. Release is, I think, next month. I hear it's a stunner. Until we get news from the source, all is speculation. Like you, it's safe to assume all of ecto is eagerly awaiting word from the home office. Meanwhile, we are happy to chat up whatever pops into our minds, and we hope you'll join in. I assure you these pages will soon be teeming with news about Happy and her new album and her new label and whatever else the near future may bring! >You really have to laugh, don't you?? Not so vain, in fact, perfectly reasonable! > Is it me, or haven't I seen a darn thing about her? Well, maybe not this week. Or perhaps last. But really, when you get right down to it, how much is there to talk about when Happy's last album came out almost 3 years ago? Okay, sure there was some excitement when her performances with Project Lo (on the album _Black Canvas_) were released, and of course when she did a few shows with Project Lo last Fall. Of course, the above is the *reasonable* explanation as to why there's been no real mention of Happy Rhodes here lately. The *real* reason is that we're a big bunch o' people with an awful lot of musical (and literary, and cinematic, and...) interests in common, not just Happy Rhodes, and for the past almost-7 years of this party, we've kinda just been talking about whatever we have to talk about. Pull up a chair and join in! We're a friendly bunch, and virtually flame and completely spam free. Oh, and in case you hadn't heard, Happy's new album is due out this Spring (next month, perhaps? Kevin?), with the support of her new label, Samson. There might even be fun toys like videos and tours to go with this one... welcome... jeff - -- |Jeffrey C. Hi folks, This weekend I went to see Ma Vie En Rose, which was a very tender-hearted fun movie. The question I have though, is about the music played during the trailer for a new film written and directed by Gary Oldman. Unfortuantely I don't even remember the title of the movie, but it looked very dark, very depressing, very bleak, and very violent. I think it won some awards at Cannes. Anyway, the music sounded very interesting--female vocals that started out wordlessly--I almost thought it was a foreign language (like Bulgarian or somethign). The words then became decipherable and it was English--unfortunately i don't remember them--but I think they mentioned Paradise. Anyway, if anyone has seen the trailer and knows what I'm talking about, and knows who it is, please let me know. It definitely sounded like something work checking out (the movie looked pretty good too--I've been a Gary Oldman fan for years, but this one looks pretty bleak). Hi all, I know we have several Cindy Lee Berryhill fans here, & some who might be having difficulty finding her albums. CLB's last CD (Garage Orchestra) & her current CD (Straight Outta Marysville) are somewhat tough to find in many stores in the USA & many people on the Jewel lists have asked me how to order them. Most of the online CD services carry these but for those interested, both of these CDs can easily be ordered directly from Cindy Lee herself. She still has a limited supply of 1st pressings of each that you can purchase for $15 each & that includes shipping. She'll also be happy to autograph them on request. If you'd like to order either or both of these CD's simply send an email to: paul@cdaddy.com with "CLBCD" in the subject line. Indicate quantity & titles of which ones you'd like to order along with your name & adress (& if you'd enjoy an autographed copy). They'll email you back specific instructions & confirm your order. That simple. If you are outside the USA, I'm not sure what procedure is, but I know they'll try to work it out or advise you on where to get them. They seem to already have good distribution in Europe & Canada. I personally love both of these albums & "Garage Orchestra" is one of my favorite albums period. I know a few others here who will testify to that! If you love "Pet Sounds" era Brian Wilson, CLB's "Garage Orchestra" CD has plenty of those amazing "pop-symphony" type arrangements guaranteed to transport you. :-) Alan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Mar 1998 23:05:53 -0500 From: wojs of mass destruction Subject: Re: JPP (was: Re: Susan McKeown at Fez) also sprach Markku Kolkka: >JPP (the band formerly known as Järvelän Pikkupelimannit) is coming to >USA for a mini-tour in a few weeks: > >1.4: Middletown, CT, USA - venue to be confirmed i'm 100% certain that the venue is the buttonwood tree (since that's what their newsletter and web site says). i'm planning on being there (provided i send in my money for a ticket soon enough). anyone else? woj n.p. laurie anderson -- strange angels ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Mar 1998 00:00:40 From: meredith Subject: a couple pleas Hi!
