This, obviously, is my review of the show... though it's not quite the ordinary review of a Chanting House show since I actually say something bad about one aspect of the performance. ;) Before I get into actually talking about the specifics of the concert, I want to come clean about a musical bias I have that may have skewed my perception of parts of the show. I generally dislike the use of electronic keyboards in folk/trad music, and the more obvious they are the more I dislike them. In other styles of music I don't have much of a problem with them, but when it comes to folk/trad I guess my opinion of keyboards falls just short of loathing (and sometimes does not fall short). So keep in mind that your milage may vary. And now on with the actual review. Eoin (Owen) Woods opened the show and he was great. Eoin is a very talented guitar player with a good voice and pretty good songs, and his between song banter tends to be damn funny. As for the main act, Susan and the Chanters were in their usual great form. Is it a sign of having seen them too many times at Fez when I start to notice things like the lighting and the details of the mix? Nah... but the lighting was a bit poor, and Michelle was mixed up louder than usual (not that that's a bad thing). Overall it was another amazing Chanting House show, and no matter how many of them I see I always look forward to seeing another one. There was however one thing I did dislike about the performance, and that was the damned Kurzweil. When we sat down and I saw the keyboard sitting on stage I sort of cringed, and when it was actually played I cringed even more. The special guest for the night was Jamshied Sharifi, who was one of the producers on _Bushes & Briars_ and also played keyboards on the album. In addition to his time at the keyboard during this show he also played the Fez's piano during "After Aughrim" and did a damn fine job of it, so I want to make it clear that my problem was not with him but with his keyboard. With the exception of "After Aughrim", Jamshied played keyboard during the songs in the set that appear on _Bushes & Briars_. During a couple of the songs he also used a mouthpiece that he blew into to produce sort of flute-like sounds from the keyboard... though to be honest the word that flashed through my head when he was doing it was "abomination". No offense intended to Jamshied, but I look forward to hearing the Chanters do some of those songs without the damned keyboard. During a couple >of the songs he also used a mouthpiece that he blew into to produce sort >of flute-like sounds from the keyboard... i couldn't see him from where i was sitting (for those who have been the fez, right in front of one of those pillars at either end of the stage), but i'd hazard a guess it was a lyricon (made famous by the guys in shadowfax) as for the set as a whole, i don't react as violently to non-traditional takes on traditional music as mike does (heck, i typically encourage that sort of thing!), but some of the sounds coming from the kurzweil did set my nerves on edge. but, as always, it was great to see the whole band together again and i was glad to hear a healthy dollop of songs that haven't seen recording tape yet. woj n.p. ja:rvela:n pikkupelimannit ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Mar 1998 15:46:48 -0600 (CST) From: Michael Curry Subject: Re: Susan McKeown at Fez On Sun, 8 Mar 1998, wojs of mass destruction wrote: > as for the set as a whole, i don't react as violently to non-traditional > takes on traditional music as mike does (heck, i typically encourage that > sort of thing!), but some of the sounds coming from the kurzweil did set my > nerves on edge. It's not non-traditional takes that bug me, just keyboards and other electronic instruments. For example, Solas uses non-traditional percussion on their albums and many of their arrangements of traditional tunes give purists fits.... but they don't use keyboards. And even keyboards don't drive me to distraction all the time. They blend in nicely on Johnny Cunningham's _Peter & Wendy_, and of course I'm a big Loreena fan and she uses them. Of course in both cases I could also do without them. Just to be clear about things. ;) Mike np: Deanta -- Deanta | Michael Curry / mcurry@io.com / mcurry@compuserve.com | | http://www.io.com/~mcurry | | Am I bitter? I had just learned about the Centerport show (last night) from a quickie mention in _Newsday_ ("Nightlife" section back on Thursday) and a listing in this week's _Long Island Voice_... the Borders Commack date (this Friday) I learned from a recent visit to that store and saw the fliers...I've been trying to interest others in going... Last night's show was sponsored by the Folk Music Society of Huntington (Long Island, New York)... it was more of a "Chanting House Trio," you might say - just Susan (voice, guitar, bodhran and egg), Chris Cunningham (all other guitars), and Lindsey Horner (string bass, woodwinds and penny whistle)... about 60% from _Bones_ and 40% or so from _Bushes and Briars_ (title song, "In London So Fair," and "The Mountain Streams where the Moorcocks Crow")...old faves, too, plus the still un-recorded "Seven Cold Glories" and her take on "Daddy's Little Girl." Almost full house last night, too. Lots of applause. I had front row center, right in front of Susan (who felt comfortable with everyone). The open mic, which delayed the real show by about 1 hour was torture (except for the humorous Tim Atwell, a local man)... I really grew impatient (and was somewhat grateful that Susan and Brendan and Chris and Lindsey were having dinner at that time - so they didn't suffer). _Bushes & Briars_ will get its first spin tonight here...I can't wait for Friday, when Susan and Lindsey hit Commack. Someone asked me for some info that I was unfortunately unable to provide, so I'm turning to you guys, since I know there are several Boston-area ectophiles who might know. Apparently Pamela Means (a wonderful singer/songwriter who's been talked about a bit here in the past) is playing in Boston tomorrow (Monday) night somewhere, and this person lost the schedule and has no idea where or when. A web search has yielded nothing, so I was wondering if someone who might have a copy of the Boston Phoenix or something lying around might check the ads and see if she's playing at any of the folk-type venues in Boston or Cambridge tomorrow night? If you find anything, please send the info to the address cc'ed on this note (and why not post it here too, in case anyone else wants to go). Pamela Means is really great, and if anyone has the chance to see her, you shouldn't pass it up. (Unfortunately every time she plays in New Haven lately, I find out about it the next day. Argh.)
