Sweet William, Casino Ashtrays, the Relationships The three new twee kitten singles are available now by mailorder, woohoo! Buy them so I can pay off my credit card and because it's a good cause: pop music. :) But I don't feel like writing descriptions today, because I'm lazy and record label hype is crap.... sooo here's reviewer Becky's unbiased opinions just delivered by email: "Wow. Can I describe them for you? The Casino Ashtrays are quiet and soothing and very pretty. They sound young. I bet if I went babysitting and I played this while the kids were going to sleep they'd like it. It sounds a bit disorganized, but that's not a good word and you won't sell millions with that. It sounds like they produced it themselves, but they didn't know how to do the mixing so everything is the same loudness. It sounds good that way, though. They could tour with The Cardigans. The Relationships are the coolest and I love them. Just say that: This band rawks and Becky loves them. They sound like they could be the soundtrack to Lady Chatterly's Lover, but I have no idea why. They are TIMELESS! They sound like they have fun and wear white sweaters over their shoulders and have black pointy shoes. I don't think there is anything that could be added to the songs because they're so full. Their songs are chirpy and really fresh sounding. Hmm, I feel like a dork, but that's really what they sound like. They'd never tour with Oasis. I really like, "I lost your number and you never called me." I don't know why, though. That's just a cool line. Sweet William are very sophisticated and they flow. Their songs are full, too. They're really strong, but really soft too because they don't have any sharp points in the songs. They're not really happy songs, but they're not sad songs. They're the kind of band that makes you feel glad you're listening to them. They'd be good to see live because people would dress up to see them. They don't sound young either. I bet they're in college! Right now! And they all have nice haircuts!" the twee kitten catalog... *new* tk-009 the Relationships 'Country Catalogue' cd-ep, 5 songs, $3.00 *new* tk-008 Sweet William 'Ambiguous' cd-ep, 4 songs, $3.00 *new* tk-007 Casino Ashtrays 'Bus to Vegas' cd-ep, 3 songs, $3.00 tk-006 Icy Spicy Coolmint 'Water Bridge' 7", 3 songs, $3.00 tk-005 Palindromes 'Muy Muy Pop Yum Yum' cd, 14 songs, $9.00 tk-004 Charming 'Giant' cd, 13 songs, $9.00 tk-003 Scott Brookman 'the Busy World of...' 7", 3 songs, sold out tk-002 Pedestal 'Waiting' 7", 5 songs, $3.00 tk-001 Jumprope 'No Happy Songs' 7", 4 songs, $3.00 Postage: US/Canadian: $1 first item, $0.50 cents each additional. The first movement of Karl Jenkins' _Palladio_, a three-movement work inspired not by DeBeers but by the architecture of Andrea Palladio, who lived in Italy during the 16th Century. Jenkins (who past credentials include being a member of Soft Machine) did adapt for the first movement for DeBeers' "Shadows" campaign. His _Adiemus_ music has also been used in TV advertising: for Delta AirLines. _Palladio_ appears on the Sony Classical CD _Diamond Music_ (SK.62276, DDD), originally made for Work Music London (an indie company not to be confused with Sony's WORK Group). EMI-Virgin has the first _Adiemus_ CD, Sony the second. I had my choice of several stores in NYC's Chinatown that had it in stock last September.... :^\ My copy is a Taiwanese Warner/UFO Group disc (0630 18768 2). Elegant bilingual (Chinese-English) booklet. Best recorded sound from China Record Company's Shanghai studios. (That's coming from someone who buys CRC imports when he's in Chinatown). Awesome scoring and vocals (check out "Seven Drums," "The Sixth Dalai Lama's Love Song," and "Question from the Other Shore"). And a gold-plated CD to boot. :-) Philip David (having fun with my PC again now that Adobe's ATM 4 is finally installed) 2/24/1998 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Feb 1998 22:19:58 -0500 (EST) From: 00jnweiser@bsuvc.bsu.edu Subject: The "da da da" song This doesn't really belong on Ecto, but, oh what the hell. I know that the band is from Germany (I think), and that this song was a *big* hit there like 10+ years ago. Then it found it's way over to America, lots of years later, and hit it big. Now it's being used (or was) in the Volkswagon commercials. So, the band that recorded it has moved on to do other things (possibly non-music, i can't remember), and this 20-year-old song is *still* making money for them. Crazy. :) So, yeah. That's it. I am SO behind on ecto mail right now, and I have a few reviews to post about Paula Cole and Chris Cunningham and Michelle Kinney (but first I have to write them :}), but I just have to jump in on this one. One major ecto music ad I haven't seen mentioned, which is out of rotation now but was seen during many a sports event last summer and fall, was a Jaguar ad featuring lots of waves and swooshing water, over which was overlaid the dulcet tones of none other than Susan McKeown. The first time I heard it I almost gave myself whiplash, I did such a severe double-take! Apparently Susan's done another commercial too, but I don't know for what and I haven't heard her voice coming out of my television lately. If I find out, I'll let y'all know. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY: the Veda Hille mailing list *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Feb 1998 00:08:12 +0000 From: BarBearUh Subject: Re: Music in Commercials Richard wrote: > Garrison Keillor recently said in an interview that Public TV is no > longer valid because of cable entities like Discovery, A&E, and TLC... > Wrong, friend- I'd much rather send in a $50 check each year, or even > twice a year than be subjected to the barrage of beer and car ads that > mar anything that the networks and cable stations present. plus, those stations are all commercial stations. the programming is designed with that in mind. anything on those channels is less likely to cover controversial subjects. - -barbara NP: jacky terrasson & cassandra wilson, rendezvous ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Feb 1998 01:01:06 -0500 (EST) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: robin holcomb? I'm not sure if this is the third one, but the only disc I have is called Little Three, from 1996. I found it in the $2 bin here in Baltimore, and just love it. There is only one song with vocals (The Graveyard Song), which is cool and spooky. The Cowboy Junkies comparison was quite apt. The rest of the disc is solo piano, and it is really beautiful. Highly recommended. Joe, how'd the CD release party go? Sorry I couldn't make it, I already had tix for the Bela Fleck show in Baltimore, which was occasionally inspired and occasionally tedious. I don't understand why they let Futureman sing. All those songs sounded like they came out of Sting's wastebasket, circa 1987. (even if it was a compilation > of ep's, it was still released as a full length disc well before > _Spooky_) actually GALA might have been a full length disc, but since it was a compilation, it does not qualify as an "album" which is all they were counting above.. this is the same reason most likely that the eps MAD LOVE and SWEETNESS AND LIGHT (which incidentally wasn't called that, it didn't have a title at all, but was referred to as SWEETNESS AND LIGHT because that was the first track) wasn't listed either, as they had four and three tracks respectively (SCAR had six) and hence don't even classify as a mini-LP, but rather singles or eps in the british press. another reason GALA didn't count is that it was never officially released in the UK, and the report was quoted as coming from NME, a british publication. this of course is more information than you wanted to know i'm sure, but i am just a little sad that they aren't around. i won't be surprised though if emma and miki both don't get signed to 4AD and pull a kristin hersh/tanya donnelly sort of thing. i would equate MIKI to TANYA, as they both have the ability to write catchy tunes, with a radio/MTV friendly personality. perhaps it is the manic panic red hair that attracts all the attention. on the other hand, i have always thought of EMMA as the quiet brains behind the operation, and it will be nice to see her in the forefront, and actually lead singing finally. hopefully she won't get ignored like the brilliant KRISTIN has been. this in no way is a value judgement on MIKI or TANYA, as i love both of their music, but rather just an observation by me. one question, does anyone know what the statis is of THE PALE SAINTS? i know one of the founding members went off in his own direction to explore experimental music et al, and their last album SLOW BUILDINGS can be found in many a bargain bin. I bring this up as a stream of conciousness thing - as a former member of LUSH, MERRYL now sings (or at least in the last two albums sang) in THE PALE SAINTS. any info would be fab. thanks love irvin ps. special good energy vibe goes out to CYOAKHA from LAND OF THE BLIND. you rock, happy late VD. many thanks for the sound of happiness ringing and rescued from the postmaster's clutches. any returns of the favour i would gladly give, just ask. :) ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #66 *************************
