My home computer died (sorta) way back early last summer. And I still haven't fixed it. I'm online all day long at work, but I don't do IRC there 'cuz I'm generally busy and 'cuz the firewall means I'd have to telnet somewhere to IRC, etc. And I'm way behind on most mailing list email (even on the lists I'm supposed to be administering). 'Cuz when one can only read email during breaks at work or before/after work with a clear conscience... well. I do miss being on #ecto (both DAL and EFnet) sometimes. And of course I miss talking to my pals there. :-) If anyone was expecting email or snail mail from me way back when, it may very well be that I lost your contact info on my dead computer. 'Twas nothing personal and I've got all sorts of residual guilt over that kindof thing. anyway, I've not had much time/money to buy CDs of late, alas. I sprung for the new Richard Shindell when it came out (I feel like I sorta helped introduce him to ecto way back when, though meth and others saw him in person and talked him up after that). Still working at Star Tribune Online... http://www.startribune.com/ . 'Tis a mighty fine newspaper with lots of cool stuff online, though I suppose I'm biased. :-) My first album purchases? Gosh. The first tapes I bought were (blush) Kool and the Gang's EMERGENCY and Lionel Ritchie's album that had a whole bunch of his then-hits and Huey Lewis & the News' SPORTS. Oh and Prince albums, I got all of 'em, I think it was a requirement if you grew up in Minnesota when Purple Rain came out. Though I grew up listening to my parents' folk music records. And I've got fond memories of SESAME STREET FEVER... (complete with Grover on the cover in a white leisure suit). The first CDs i bought when I got my CD player were Peter Gabriel Plays Live and some Jethro Tull albums and Kate Bush and more Peter Gabriel. (Way Too Long) The First/Embarrassing discs thread started before I left for the Gulf coast on a visit the relations/Mardi Gras excursion ten days ago. Was pleased to find that the majority of the 245 messages piled up on the server were from the land of Ecto. Was sorry though to here of Tom Chapin’s passing, also very surprised. It seems like it wasn’t that long ago that I saw Tom performing here in New York. He seemed fit and in good health. While down in the land of Dixie I did happen to catch the NPR V. Williams’ thing Meredith mentioned and found it entertaining. I sorry I didn’t make note of the Call Sign of the station, It might have made a good addition to Meth’s Radio Ecto. I think it was 91.3 out of Mobile Alabama. I was scanning the rental car’s radio in an attempt to escape top 40 n’ shit-stompin red-neck music and stopped on Lorenna’s Mummer’s Dance, which they played frequently enough to make me a bit uncomfortable. Two other things that stuck out about the station. They played something that sounded like what I imagine Mr. Zappa might be up to were he still with us. Guitar based, convoluted, instrumental, virtuoso performance, but rats, I didn’t catch, or they didn’t say who it was. It’s gonna drive me crazy. While driving up 59' in a Gulf Breeze UFO sighting kind of major heavy duty fog they played several back to back Tibetan Bells and Bowls trance numbers that put me in mind of narcotic hazes of yesteryears. Nicholas Hill mentioned that Katell would be at St. Ann’s (One of my all time favorite venues) on May 16 and I was wondering if he or any other Ecto-folk might have the low down on who else might be on the bill ? On one of Joe Zitt’s responses to the bad news about Tom Chapin I saw Joseph Celli and Jin Hi Kim’s disc, No World (Trio) Improvisations noted as spinning about as he typed. I had the pleasure of seeing them together at the Webo Gallery in the East Village a number of years back. I can’t say I was terribly impressed with him as his stuff was just a bit to far out in left field, and left field at that time was a place I was at home in. Jin Hi Kim’s stuff I was very taken with. I also had the pleasure of seeing her with Zorn at a few of his Conduction’s a la Cobra at P.S. 122 and at the Factory. Seeing her bounce Komungo and Chango riffs off Zina Parkins and Carol Emauel’s harps’ was like dipping your sox in Vaseline, filling your brain cage with Jiffy-Pop and Nukin your skull with the dials set on berserk. Joe, if you liked the No World disc I think you’d like Jin Hi Kim’s "Sargeng" disc. It’s her playing with Elliott Sharp and Henry Kaiser. (Ear-Rational Disc ECD-1014.) A European Ectophile who’s name I unfortunately failed to note opined about how Ms. Amos was doing large venues in Europe while doing club dates in the states. Could it be that she recognizes that in the states you can’t put that many people in one place at one time and expect them behave in a civilized fashion, and is doing it in deference to her fans here who might like to see her perform without having to endure people screaming at her from the seats while she’s trying to play ? Each time I’ve seen Tori in concert I’ve enjoyed it less. The Bottom Line show back in 92’ made me a hard-core fan, even her show at Town Hall shortly thereafter she played to a respectful crowd, but since then her shows in New York have attracted crowds that have given me reason to thing twice about even going. Hopefully this tour will change that. First discs. Frank Zappa’s Absolutely Free Buffalo Springfield’s Retrospective Jefferson Airplane’s Surrealistic Pillow Jimi Hendrix’s Are You Experienced Early Embarrassing discs. Iron Butterfly’s Inagodadavida (Sp ?) Grand Funk Railroad. (not sure which) Re: the Monkee’s I’m not terribly embarrassed about having picked up on some of their vinyl when it first came out and looking back it stands up fairly well. I actually picked up a best of CD of theirs. Did you know that Jeff Beck played on one of their early disc’s ? Chet Atkins was also a session man on one of the early discs as well. I don’t recall the details, perhaps one of my fellow older Ecto-brethren can enlighten you young whipper-snappers on the who-on-what. Did you also know that Charles Manson auditioned to be a Monkee ? Just before heading out of town I had the pleasure of meeting Ectophile Paul Blair at Lisa Cerbone’s show. I might not have, were it not for the fact that I overheard him discussing Ecto with Ms Cerbone. She attested to her familiarity with the Ecto Family and cited her friendship with Neal Copperman. (who brought Ecto’s existence to her attention.) I’d agree with all that Paul had to say about Lisa and her show. Earlier that same day I had the pleasure of seeing her perform for the first time at Boarders down at the World Trade Center. She’s a perfect example of why I’m grateful to the Ecto community. I went out several months ago, totally unfamiliar with her work, and bought her "Close Your Eyes" disc based solely on an Ecto recommendation and as usual was not disappointed. Seeing her live solidified my appreciation of her. Speaking with her briefly after the earlier show gave a clue as to where her heartfelt lyrics come from. I saw the Boarders show while AWOL, extending a lunch break and had to rush on to the electric sewer (the R train) to get back to the snake-pit in Brooklyn before being missed and had no time to pick up her "Mercy" disc. Turned out to be a good thing too as her husband was selling them for a mere ten bucks at the later show. Paul’s description of her a being "Bubbly" was not off the mark. Recognizing me from the poorly attended early show, she stopped to say hello and to thank me for coming that evening, and I’d go as far as to say she’s truly sweet. Well, tugged on your sleeve long enough... John ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Feb 1998 22:15:53 -0500 (EST) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: Catching Up. Actually, I can't claim the credit, though I'd be curious how they did find it. Actually, it was ecto that introduced me (personally) to Lisa. A friend of mine had sent me a tape of the original version of the first album, but it never really sank in. When I joined ecto in CA, I was asking questions about music in Baltimore, and Lisa's husband was on ecto and wrote to me. So I began writing to them before I came back to MD. Nice folks indeed. Last Thursday I did a film transfer for one of the local banks. Once I'm done with the film, it gets off-line edited and then they go to audio. The director wanted a simple solo walking bass for the music background. As many of you know, I play a little bass. And as many of the editors play guitar, and a gaffer drums, we have this Thursday Night Music Club kind of thing going where we all get together after work and play John Hyatt tunes and whatever we feel like. So all of a sudden I'm asked to play for the spot. I cut the track in about a half hour and everyone's happy. Just a simple walking thing in A, no big whoop, but it fits the spot, and I got to thinking about music in commercials. There's a lot of it about! I guess my favorite so far was KaTe's Fruitopia Soft Drinks a while back. And if any of you remembered my tongue-in-cheek Top Ten list from the end of last year, I mentioned the Ross theme. (I was sorry no one commented on my list - I thought Modem Connect Noise being listed as a frequent listen would be funny...). Anyway, I also remember one or two Nestle themes I liked. So I was wondering if anyone else noticed Ad Music, if they had favorites or least favorites, or whatever. Another curious possible ecto thread if you'd care to add to it. I don't mind her singing...I just wish she'd sing the *good* stuff she listens to (she likes Happy, amongst others). I don't need a family member pushing products on me! That said, yeah, I loved the Fruitopia spots too (and was glad to get a copy of the r.m.g-produced Kateopia collection). Another ad of ecto significance not to be forgotten, of course, was the old Easy Spirit commercial featuring the haunting "Ballet Dream" by Pamela Golden. Hmm. I think I need to take that album to work on this week. Haven't heard it in a while. Once upon a time there was a perfume ad which featured music I would have sworn was by Wim Mertens, but this was never confirmed. Volvo (or was it VW?) once used Clannad in a campaign. Burka" Subject: new stuff hmm. busy week for cds for me (first such in a while). I picked up the new Victoria Williams, the new Kristen Hersh, and *2* copies of Susan McKeown's latest. First off, Vic: er, not sure. I haven't listened to it as much as I should yet, but I guess nothing just screamed at me the way, say, some of the stuff on _Loose_ (or _Happy Come Home_, or whatever) did. Nice, though. Kristen Hersh? Love it! Lousy liner notes, though I'm grateful for the (indecipherable) lyrics. Yeah, okay, it's a continuation of _Hips and Makers_ but with less cello, but it's a very cool album. Highly recommended if you liked her last solo effort. And yeah, well, then there's Susan. I picked up _Bushes and Briars_ early in the week and instantly adored it. I can't figure out why people are having mixed and/or slow-to-warm reactions to it. I love the arrangements, I love the selection of tunes, and I love Susan's voice. I think the only song on here I was familiar with in advance "Banks of Claudy," thanks to Loreena's fabulous version (_Parallel Dreams_, wasn't it?) and it's nice to hear a same-yet-completely-different take on it, at least arrangement-wise. So Saturday morning, I'm driving with my stepmother up to Baltimore, and I bring that disc in the car. She immediately fell in love with it, and I agreed to let her hang on to it through Sunday. Last night, driving to a restaurant with her and my dad, we listened to the disc yet again, and my Dad starts gushing about it. So today I snuck up on 'em...bought myself a new copy, and then sent them e-mail explaining that in celebration of Monday, I'd bought myself a disc...and intended to abandon the old one with them. ;-) jeff (who's glad his parents appreciate good music...) - -- |Jeffrey C. The reason I had a mixed initial reaction was because some of the arrangements on the album sound so different from the way the songs were performed when I've heard Susan do them live. Having heard "Bushes & Briars" several times with just Susan singing does not prepare you well for the version on the album. :) Having said that, after listening the the cd over and over (and over) I've certainly come to appreciate the more complex arrangements quite a bit more and I really do love the album (and I keep meaning to write a review saying that). Um, the Goodyear and J.C. Penney spots by Jonatha Brooke come to mind, but mostly I tune TV ads out simply because of the obscene number of minutes per hour that they consume and the *really* obnoxious practice of repeating the same ad over and over during a given show. Garrison Keillor recently said in an interview that Public TV is no longer valid because of cable entities like Discovery, A&E, and TLC... Wrong, friend- I'd much rather send in a $50 check each year, or even twice a year than be subjected to the barrage of beer and car ads that mar anything that the networks and cable stations present. At least the pledge drives don't interrupt the good stuff every 12 minutes or so, and are long enough to allow a chance to catch up on one's reading or refrigerator inventories.. - -- n.p. How are > their albums? I've only heard the one I mentioned (Beautiful World). It's good but not great. They have a kind of 70's-ish laid-back rock sound, with a slight touch of blues. They kind of remind me of bands like Traffic or maybe a mellow, but electrified, Eric Clapton. Another comparison might be a less bluesy version of the Allman Brothers. Their musicianship isn't nearly as great as those former bands, though! The playing is decent but nothing really jumps out at you. Modern bands to compare them to might be Hootie & the Blowfish, or maybe The Tragically Hip. Some of the songs have a strong funk/soul influence, and a couple have a tinge of country, but most are standard, slightly bluesy rock. They are not a cutting-edge band, but the album is reasonably pleasant. >> The Folk Implosion - Dare to Be Surprised (now this is great - >> sometime I'll have to post about this one.) > > Please do say more -- I've seen the group name before, but I don't > even know what kind of music it is. I really love this album. I think they have a couple of others, which I have not heard, so I can't compare them. It's hard to describe this band - they really have created their own original sound. I guess you could put them in the general "alterna-rock" category, in that it's mostly guitar-based, but they're not at all grungy or lo-fi. In fact, the production is highly clean and professional, nicely mixed, and the songs are tightly arranged and well-played. It's not noisy rock at all - in fact, it borders on acoustic. These guys play around with with interesting tempos, rhythms, chord progressions, vocal harmonies, arrangements. There's almost a jazz sensibility to it - not that I'd call this music jazz, but there's a smoothness and coolness to their sound, detached and removed, that I often associate with jazz. Yet the songs are tuneful and engaging. Both of these bands feature male vocals. Joyce PS - Neile: Yes. :-) ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #64 *************************
