Yeah, for some reason Germany seems to be quite clued on to Australian music... Our artists like Ed Kuepper or Nick Cave seem to claim more shelf space in German music shops than they do in Australia! >She asked me about them, and naturally I turn here (and the web, but I'm >betting that Andrew or Sherlyn can do better). I believe Sherlyn is away chasing Indigo Girls all over the country. But I'm quite familiar with two out of three bands Neal mentions, so I'll do my best... >First up was My Friend The Chocolate Cake, which had a fair amount of web >info on them. Personal thoughts? Are discs available outside of >Australia? Wonderful band, half of the time. The dark, moody, introspective half. Their other face is somewhat on the jangly, folky side, which kind of annoys me, but might well appeal to some people... perhaps the fans of Nields, from what I can gather about them. The Chocolate Cake are the acoustic sound of cello, violin, piano, mandolin and guitar plus drums, and male vocals, with two women in the band (cello and violin players) providing occasional harmonies... I would classify it as ecto music, with a side-note that while I love the songs I love, I hardly ever play the others. But the good ones... ah, they are wonderful. The have their own way of creating and exploiting a mood. They are also consumate live performers, true professionals in the best sense of the word. In their 5-year career they've recorded 4 CDs, at least one of which was available through CD-Now a while ago.... But why struggle to describe them to you when I can show you directly? I've put up a song of theirs for your listening pleasure on my site, in the Real Audio format. As this is completely without their permission and in breach of the copyright (but in the best of intentions!) I'll keep it there for a week at most and I make this URL known to the Ectophiles only: http://www.zip.com.au/~afries/choc.html >The Bluehouse, which I found was a trio with an ep, who sounded like a lot >of fun. I've heard of them, but I haven't heard *them*, so I can't really comment. Darn, I *knew* I should've gone to see them that last time they played in Sydney! (They're based in Melbourne, I believe). For what it's worth, they were apparently a hit of the Edinburgh Festival. >Lastly, was either an album name or group - Ruby Fruit Juice. I couldn't >find a thing on this. Ring any bells? Another band from Melbourne - they've gone through several changes of names. Originally "The Bad Girls" they were forced to re-name themselves because of a local group of female strippers going by the same name. After some short-lived variations they went with Ruby Fruit Jungle, which I suspect is what you meant. Or did they change "Jungle" to "Juice"? Who knows - I just can't keep up with them... OK, let's move on to the music - they are 5 women drumming and singing. Their music is largely based on South American and Caribbean rhythms and works best in the context of a live performance; I've got their studio CD (still as Bad Girls) which I haven't played in *ages*. On the other hand, I vividly remember their live performance I witnessed a couple of years ago as one of the best gigs I've ever seen, period. They absolutely rocked. The gig took place at this rather stuffy and quiet folky type of a venue, and the memory of 5 drums getting into the groove and shaking this place up is one that stayed with me for a long time :) I believe they've got another CD out, which was sold at their gigs only. And I think there is a Web page about them somewhere, I just can't find it at the moment.... But frankly, I think to enjoy them you just have to be there! - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- No more imagination, there's role to be played go to work and be milked like cattle everyday Human stables hold the herd, office stalls filled with stock the system keeps you docile by promising the weekend off... Or is that just a figure of speech, a little joke? I think it's mostly a figure-of-speech/joke -- I generally still like the particular song(s) that induced me to by an album, even if I might not consider them "great art" (then or now). Like you, I also enjoy listening to songs from my past now and then for their nostalgia value. I guess certain types of music seem more like guilty pleasures than great music, particularly in retrospect; but if you like it, and it makes you feel good, who can argue with that? Big Head Todd & The Monsters - Beautiful World I've liked the handful of songs I've heard from this group. How are their albums? The Folk Implosion - Dare to Be Surprised (now this is great - sometime I'll have to post about this one.) Please do say more -- I've seen the group name before, but I don't even know what kind of music it is. I don't see the point in starting new #ecto channels when there already is one (well, actually two). Just get on IRC, connect to a DALnet server, and join #ecto. For those that don't know how to get on IRC, you'll need a client program, I use MIRC myself, there is also PIRCH and several others, downloadable from the net and in some cases available from your internet service provider. If your computer won't handle it... well... you need a new computer . The point is, to have a "semi-private" IRC channel which will hopefully be (although not guaranteed to be) free from take-overs and op wars and kick/bans and ill-willed people in general. But yes, on the other hand, once you are on DALnet (if you happen to frequent DALnet, I myself am an EFnet kind of person) you can always just hop on over to #ecto on DALnet. The choice is there. :) And, regarding IRC clients, those of you on shell accounts can use ircII; drop me a line if you need a tutorial. - - Bill. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Feb 1998 15:48:11 -0600 From: "Heavy Bohnen" Subject: any info on Lili Hardn Hi, I'm looking for some info on an artist named Lili Haydn. I heard that she has performed with Jewel, Tom Petty, Robert Plant, and several others. She is 25 years old, and plays the violin. Please e-mail me privately. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
