Just wanted to pass along the news that the show we did at Fort Mason Pavillion with Crosby Stills & Nash and Santana went GREAT!!! We had, quite possibly, the worlds most fabulous time on the 1st! We hung out with David Crosby for a long time during sound check and he even signed Ny's guitar while she hyperventilated and pee'd on herself! Plus--we played for 5,000 really nice people from across the country! We're pretty sure we broke the fabulometer this time. ;) Anyway, we are still in the process of getting all of the photos from the CSN Santana show up on the web site and we'll send out another message in a couple of days to let ya'll know they're up. Plus, we'll have more details from the show...yee ha! In the meantime, we've got a show this Wednesday night (yes....very soon) at a new club that seems to be making waves in San Francisco. Hope to see some of you there! - -da g&i ________________________________________________ the girl & i POB 460784 NyandMike@girlandi.com San Francisco CA 94146-0784 http://www.girlandi.com (415) 282-4233 This has been a post from the sf-fumblers list. Friday night, I went to see Lisa Cerbone at Hotel Galvez. I had only heard about her here, but had no ide= a what to expect. When I first saw her I thought, "Hey! It's Ally McBeal = up there with a guitar!" Actually, she doesn't look too much like Calista Flockhart; it was just her general--dare I say it? will I get slapped?--perkiness that did it. When Lisa talks, she has this Midwester= n accent that reminded me that yes, we Midwesterners do indeed have accents. :-) The set was quite pleasant; that may sound like damning with faint praise= , but I'm rarely sold the first time I hear someone. She was accompanied b= y fellow guitarist Dave something (darn, I should have remembered)., and while I prefer two acoustics to one, I much prefer a full band. (After t= he set she mentioned that she normally plays with a band, but as this was on= e of her first performances in New York area we'd have to wait till next ti= me to hear her with the band.) I was too busy catching on to the general fee= l of the music to be able to pick up much from the lyrics, and I'm beginnin= g to find that the imagery in lyrics is pretty important to me after all. = I really would like a chance to hear her again, preferably with the band. After the set I got onto Lisa's mailing list and mentioned ecto, whereupo= n she brought up Neal, who she's apparently become good friends with. And then this fellow standing near us heard me mention ecto and introduced himself as John Henshon. Small world :-) After Lisa's set was over, I noticed a familiar face in the back of the room: someone I mentioned on this list back in October: "a girl who plays odd percussion like a bongo and some oversize thing you shake (given what= I learned about fishes, this one's probably called a 'whale')." Her name i= s Ya El, and that night she was at Fez backing Elissa Peimer, who came on after Mila Drumke. This evening she and Larry Burlengue (sp?), who was Elissa Peimer's bass player that same night, were part of a threesome called Flezadoza. Unfortunately, I didn't find them particularly interesting: slightly angsty folky New Yorky stuff sung by a fellow with = a goatee. :-P Saturday night was my first time at the Mercury Lounge, which is like the Arlene Grocery only bigger: a big, rectangular, black room with brick wal= ls and tables along the sides, and a lot of space to stand in the middle. Mila Drumke was playing at 10:30. I wound up going early and catching th= e tail end of a very interesting set by Barbara Brousal. Besides the norma= l acoustic + bass + drums setup, she had a guy with an old Hammond organ, which made the band sound like one of those '70s groups like Procul Harum or Focus--but fronted by a woman with a voice like Natalie Merchant. I lo= ok forward to hearing more from her. She seems to have quite a following, judging by the number of people who were there. After that a woman named Lisa Costello came on with her band and did country-style blues that sometimes wanted to head off in a Cowboy-Junkies-like direction, but neve= r made it out of the bland mainstream. She was quite attractive, though, s= o I still enjoyed the set. :-) By the time Mila came on the crowd had thinned out considerably. Since Lisa Costello left the stage about 10:15 I thought that perhaps for once Mila would get to open on time at 10:30. No such luck. Mila was apparently having problems getting something in tune, and the set didn't start till 10:40, which meant that by the time she started, almost no one was left standing in the middle, though the tables were still all full. But things turned around audience-wise after that. Mila opened with "Constance," which unfortunately had her miked up a little loud, so that when she hit the real loud parts it almost hurt. After that things went quite well. Lyris Hung had a very attractive haircut and somehow seemed taller and more imposing than I remembered her. Mila had brought someone who I learned later is her normal drummer, Mark Sacco, though I had never seen him before. He really kicked butt--and he has a lusty look of someo= ne who just loves to hit things. :-) The best part of the set was Mila's cover of "Under the Ivy," which had everyone go dead quiet. At the end of the show I couldn't help but think of a silly Star Trek metaphor--you know those analyses of Star Trek where Spock represents Kirk's rational side and McCoy his emotional side? So there's Lyris on o= ne side of Mila, looking very impassive and generally Spock-like, and then Elissa playing bass on the other side, with her fluid, cat-like sways. I= n the middle, Mila, the head of the team, not so aloof as Lyris or as uninhibited as Elissa. But the three women themselves made up a sort of transparent spherical shell of calm surrounding the mad drummer. I guess he must've been the warp core :-) I wound up buying Mila's first CD, the one I didn't have already. When I listened to it I was a bit disappointed; I like those songs a lot better the way they do them live. But I'm sure they'll grow on me. Mila is playing Saturday at Ciel Rouge ("one of the city's most intimate rooms" with red velvet curtains, so it says). She's bringing a lot of extra musicians to join the band, and will be doing "an evening of standa= rd and not-so-standard love songs." I'm told that the 10pm show is already practically completely booked and that reservations are recommended for t= he 8pm show (212-929-5542). I'm looking forward to it. Speaking of which: During the show Mila mentioned that anyone who was on her electronic e-mail list should sign up again, since the computer ate t= he list. (After the show, Erin, the Little Pro Records person, told me that Mila's mailing list had been saved onto a bad floppy two days before.) S= o if you're interested in getting her mailings, you should e-mail her at miladrumke@earthlink.net. Attention Neile!! Freelove (fwd) The attached should answer most of Cyoakha's questions about Laurie Freelove. There is a web-site too, but I don't seem to have that handy at the moment. I'm surprised she didn't include it in her message. Cyoakha, I have been wondering, how do you say your name, and where did it come from? Thanks for sending the disc.... I love the idea of including candy :) (Though I really didn't like that little thing that looked like an apple.) I'm having the same problem with the disc that I had with the tape, which kept me from commenting publicly on it. That is, I'm having trouble making everything gel together. There are lots of distinct elements I like, scattered all over the disc, but they haven't all clicked together for me yet. I've only played it a few times, so perhaps this will be something I will overcome. I'll share more coherent thoughts after a few more listens. That aside, recording live was definitely a great idea. The band and arrangements are constantly intriguing, and everything sounds much better than on the first disc. I ordered both Hand to Mouth discs from C's mention on her year end list, though I haven't had a chance to listen to them yet. I have the first Land of the Blind disc in my car, and on some of the songs C's vocals sound much like Grace's in OHO, the local Baltimore band she fronted before H2M. They are now housed in Seattle. Has anyone up there ever seen mention of them anywhere? Wall of SOund - never heard of it applied to anything other than the Spector stuff before today, so that's been kind of interesting. Most embarassing discs: Well, I have a number of discs I don't like that well, but, at least around here, they are more likely to illicit surprise that I'm not into them. But none of them embaress me. However, I do occasionally listen to, and still even enjoy, ELP's Brain Salad Surgery and Kansas' Leftoverture, and that does embaress me a bit. I was a huge Kansas fan in high school. I'm sure it's shaped the person I am today :) Neal np: Future Folklore, Volume 3: Java Jam nr: The Fountain of Highlandtown - Rafael Alvarez The Salaryman's Wife - Sujata Massey (Both current or former reporters for the Baltimore Sun.) - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Fri, 17 Oct 1997 23:08:39 -0400 (EDT) From: NineLineCo@aol.com To: elan@access.digex.net Subject: L.
