Oh, too many embarrassing CD's to mention, since as a teenager I was a big "new age" fan. I bought almost every Yanni CD until I wised up around '92. Actually, his first album, _Keys to Imagination_, ain't bad... Loads of newage dreck lying about. About the only stuff I still listen to from that era are Vangelis, some Patrick O'Hearn, Michael Hedges, and a few songs on various other albums. What was I thinking? For an honorable mention, I was bequeathed a duffel-bag full of cheesy 80's tapes a few years ago, and I sometimes dig through them when I need to feel superior. Think Linear. Think New Kids on the Block's Christmas album. Think Eddie Murphy's mercifully short singing career. I have to admit that the "Young Einstein" soundtrack is pretty cool though. The name of the trio was "New Directions" & they only performed around Alaska so I'm assuming "this Suzanne" was another local resident at the time. I'm not too familiar with the Suzanne Little of Ecto fame, but last year Paul was kind enough to send me a few recent songs so I could compare voices. (Several 1986 live & rehearsal recordings of New Directions exist in the Kilcher Family Archive.) I personally thought it sounded like two different people, but seeing over 11 years of "vocal development" had passed, I wasn't 100% certain its not the same Suzanne. Atz & Jewel have lost touch with her & are completely unaware of another Suzanne Little, so that doesn't help either.... The only other possibly helpful info to this confusion is this: On one of the New Directions recordings, Suzanne Little says how nice it is to see her brother who was a guitar player in The Ricky Scaggs Band at the time. (One of the New Directions tapes is a warmup set for Ricky Scaggs in Alaska) So possibly an Ecto-phile with knowledge of Suzanne's family could shed a bit more light on this question? That is a fact, boys and girls. Spector is "King of Mono". He apparently recorded vocals and instruments on multiple tracks to achieve his "symphonic" effect. Check out those mighty sounds on "Be My Baby" (The Ronettes) for the prime example, and also Spector's biggest hit as a producer, if I remember correctly. Meat Loaf's Bat out of Hell albums (produced by Todd Rundgren and Jim Steinman, respectively) were also called wall-of-sound albums, sonically. As for My Bloody Valentine, I don't think the comparison is very apt -- MBV is more ambient. Loveless is one loud, distorted mess of sounds, with Bilinda Butcher's voice buried under a lot of static. Wall of sound styles of production tend to crank up EVERYTHING so that each part is clear and strong, unlike the case with MBV. With DCD, I feel the music is almost escapist; with Stellamara, there?s an anthropologic reverence, that?s not so much *academic* as it is *resonant* with history. But that one has grown and grown on me, it's is quite a mix, from PJ hard to soft songs to spoken word...after falling for this one the other one now seems commercial! Haha...anyway, does anyone know where she comes from, I get such a Euro hit from her music, yet there's that name and the slight NY accent???Any idea anyone? Also any info on Laurie Freelove, mad about her stuff and can't seem to find it anywhere...is there more than the album Smells like Truth, and who was first with smells like? Her or Nivana? Speaking of Nivana, does anyone else hear the rifts in Rickie Lee Jones new one that are direct or am I insane...I do admit to hearing stolen riffs everywhere, but then hey, a reviewer in Portland just said about my music- "does the world really need another Kate Bush meets Dead Can Dance?" haha I fell over, complimented but amazed with hilarity and insanity...I emailed him and asked "what are the name of all those other bands that are too numerous to add to the world's burdons?" (so I can run out and buy their albums! Anyway, thanks to all the Ectoheads that ordered mine this Christmas and all the compliments back about it...it keeps me going! peace, Cy "how hard is the cross that you bear? are there bitter slivers stuck in you everywhere?how heavy is the cross that you bear? can you hear your bones snap, can you hear your tendons tear?" from The Cross, OUT of CHAOS into the whirlwind, THE BLIND Land of the Blind c/o NW New Music 3439 NE Sandy Blvd., Suite 266 Portland, Oregon, U.S.A. 97232 (503) 321-5093 email lanblind@teleport.com http://www.teleport.com/~lanblind/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Feb 1998 18:41:15 -0500 From: "Chris Beckwith" Subject: Dusty Springfield suffers relapse Dusty Springfield Won't Make Show LONDON--Dusty Springfield canceled an appearance at the Brit Awards because she's battling a recurrence of breast cancer. "We had hoped that Dusty Springfield, that icon of music, would be here tonight," the awards' host, comedian Ben Elton, said Monday night. "Sadly, her management have asked us to convey her apologies and said that she's very ill and sadly battling against cancer." The awards honor the best in British music. Springfield, 59, is known for her '60s hits "I Only Want To Be With You," "Son Of A Preacher Man" and "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me." She had a lump removed from her breast three years ago. Another lump recently was discovered in the same breast. "We have every expectation that Dusty's going to make a full recovery," said Vicki Wickham, her manager and longtime friend. This was in today's LA Times. These lists are fascinating -- I haven't read them all yet, but I just have to chime in. I don't have any CDs at work (I can't listen to music at work, which really sucks when I stop to think about it, but in reality I'm on the phone literally all day, so I wouldn't be able to enjoy it even if I could). However, I can contribute to the "most embarrassing music purchase" thread. Neither are CDs, because CDs didn't exist yet. Hmmm... do I pick Menudo or _Thriller_? I think I'd have to go with The Michael. Please keep in mind that I was, like, 11. If it redeems me at all, the very first album I ever bought with my own money was Blondie's _Parallel Lines_. As for most embarrassing album I still listen to, that would probably have to be Culture Club's _Kissing To Be Clever_ (though I haven't spun it in AGES). :) Whoops, time for Buffy... +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY: the Veda Hille mailing list *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #44 *************************
