Interesting, Neile, since this band has a vital pop element to its music. "The Day I Went Away", "Call the Doctor" and "Dig Me Out" all run on hooks and melodies. > lot of buzz both critical and popular about them, though I wouldn't say > they were anywhere near overexposed yet. I think critics have tended to excuse Corin Tucker for oversinging. Her guitar playing (with Carrie Brownstein) is very good, though, with some of the most interesting riffs around. My verdict tends to be: Better than Bikini Kill (who tends to be almost tuneless and undisciplined), angrier than Veruca Salt (not necessarily a good thing or bad). I.D. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Feb 1998 13:09:53 -0600 From: forum@inlink.com Subject: Tanita, Over the Rhine, Downy Mildew, Kristin Hersh if i remember correctly tanita tikaram has definitely been talked about before here on ecto. especially when LOVER IN THE CITY came out (about the same time in 1994 that a little known singer named JEWEL was talked about here on ecto). seems that tanita included a YODELING song on her 94 album, and there were people who were commenting on that coincidence. I have three of her albums (ANCIENT HEART, THE SWEET KEEPER, and EVERYBODY's ANGEL) and like her first two albums, though they have a definite pop sensibility on them, that is lacking in EVERYBODY'S ANGEL. Probably once a year, i go through all my CD's to try to listen to the ones that i never listen to, and that one always ends up on stack. I will listen to it once more, and then it goes back into the archives. I lost interest after that, but perhaps once again i should go back and relisten. 11 KINDS OF LONELINESS intrigued me with the title but alas didn't impress me with the music when i sampled it at the radio station i was working at back then, and i never got around to checking out the LOVER IN THE CITY. ah well. i can say though that i have ANCIENT HEART on vinyl and the song POOR COW used to make it onto several mix tapes of mine. I thought it was such a brilliant song in that it sounds so damn perky and happy, but as you listen to the songs, you realize that it is about slaughtering a cow and eating it (the chorus goes something like "chop it up, chop it up, chop it up...). this just amused me to no end, call me sick. little bit of trivia, the song TWIST IN MY SOBRIETY (tanita's only "hit" here in the states i think) was once featured in a MIAMI VICE episode. now that is cool. almost as cool as having your song featured on FACTS OF LIFE (not once but twice by STACEY Q...but i digress). also for some sort of reason i always group together tanita tikaram with tracey chapman and toni child. perhaps it is because they were releasing albums in the late 80's all about the same time, and their sensibilities were so diametrically opposite to what was then popular. on other notes, how many CD's does OVER THE RHINE have? and what have they been up to lately? i only have one CD by them, and for some reason, i used to mix them up with THE INNOCENCE MISSION. hmmmm....i also want to say that mixed them up with DOWNY MIDLEW, but at least i knew better than that. DM by the way has been nixed from the ecto guide to good music by neile. i would make some sort of comment about them in an attempt to keep them in the guide, being as i have all four CD's by them, but the reality is i never listen to any of them. why i have them i dunno (must been a lapse of judgement, at the bargain bin). i'll listen to them again and get back to you neile. and who has the new kristin hersh CD? is it as brilliant as i hope it is? i need to get it, but have no money. i haven't bought a single CD in a month. what is wrong with me? oh yeah, i'm broke. that's it. enough rambling. back to work. love irvin Forum for Contemporary Art 3540 Washington Avenue St. Louis, MO 63103 314/535.4660 314/535.1226 (fax) forum@inlink.com January 16 - March 14, 1998: Nancy Burson:Portraits, Eve Andree Laramee: Apparatus for the Distillation of Vague Intuitions, and in the Project Room: Bottomland: John Hilgert, Richard Newman, and Christina Shmigel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Feb 1998 14:26:00 -0500 (EST) From: Stuart Myerburg Subject: Re: Tanita, Over the Rhine, Downy Mildew, Kristin Hersh Irvin wondered: > and who has the new kristin hersh CD? is it as brilliant as i > hope it is? Well, on the first couple of listens, no. I think _Hips & Makers_ is brilliant, and it's definitely on my Top 10 of all time. So, I had high hopes for _Strange Angels_ since it's basically _Hips & Makers_ Part II. It has the same sparse sound as _H&M_, this time with a few more added instrumental flourishes than last. I think it may take a while to sink in, though. It's not bad by any means. Just not _Hips & Makers_. So, my opinion may change after repeated listening. I think it didn't grab me quite as much on the first listen. But I have had it on almost constantly when I have been at home, and it consistently pulls my attention from whatever else I am doing. And I am drawn more and more into it. It isn't H&M,II....but I wouldn't want that. It is a wonderful CD, though. Destined for heavy rotation on my radio station. Speaking of radio, the local "alternative" station has played Ani's new single several times. I have missed it each time, but have been very surprised to hear them mention it. Of course they did give me tickets to her show a year or so ago, which was odd since they had never ever played a note form her before. Methinks indie-cred may be fading here....?
