During the past four years, the organization has provided free self- defense classes, lectures, and discussions on self- defense and produced the compilation double CD, Home Alive: The Art of Self Defense, which was released on Epic and featured Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Joan Jett, Exene Cervenka, and others. Home Alive had hoped that it would be able to sustain its operations with the help of album sales and community support, but even with downsizing, it is in danger of going out of business. The Indigo Girls' show Friday (Jan. 30) night at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles turned into a star- studded lovefest, clocking in at close to two non-stop hours. In the first hour, the Indigo Girls, a.k.a. Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, performed a diverse assortment of songs from their decade- long career and even included a cover of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here." Then the fun began. The band was joined first by former Atlantans Matthew Sweet and singer/ songwriter Kristen Hall: Sweet performed "Someone to Pull the Trigger" with Hall, Ray, and Saliers on backing vocals, then Hall later sang her own "Let It Rain." The Indigo Girls were then joined by longtime pal -- and Ally McBeal songstress -- Vonda Shepard, the unsigned artist who currently finds herself amid a label bidding war, who performed her song "Baby" and later accompanied the Girls on keyboards for a moving rendition of "Love's Recovery." (Shepard and the Girls, who have toured together before, are said to be recording together soon. Details to come.) The night's surprises didn't end with Sweet, Hall, and Shepard. Acclaimed singer/ songwriter/ activist John Trudell joined the fun by performing the spoken word piece "Out of the Blue," from his recent album Honor, released last year on Ray's own Daemon Records. Next up was Jackson Browne, who joined the Girls for a spirited version of "Gallileo." (He had contributed the backing vocals to the song on their Rites of Passage album.) Opening act Danielle Howle and the Tantrums (also on Daemon) and assorted guests joined in for a rousing rendition of the Voilent Femmes' "Blister in the Sun," proving that buried somewhere, the Indigo Girls do have a sense of humor. And last but not least, the crowd went nuts when Ani DiFranco joined the ensemble onstage for the closing number "Closer to Fine." Although the surprise guests were politely received, they went relatively unrecognized -- it was apparent who this crowd was here to see. No live review of the Indigo Girls would complete without stressing the importance of the relationship this duo shares with their fans. Even after a decade of constant touring, the two performers still seem genuinely moved by the reaction of their rabid fans, who sing along to every song, and yes, still light their bics. - --Michelle Roche ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Feb 1998 21:41:23 -0800 (PST) From: Bill Subject: Stupid Question of the Year Award nomination. I don't know what it is about the song, but I immediately fell for it. I always find it invigorating, and a great car song. Plus, I always marvel that it hardly sounds like Dar singing at all, and it's pretty country sounding too. Only a handful of words and phrases sound Dar-like to my ears. But I love so many of the lyrics, like "She's a summer storm, but I'm a hurricane, one just blows through town, one blows the town away." I was thinking about this the other day, and was wondering what my reaction would be to Fred Eaglesmith's version. I've never heard any of his music, but I could easily imagine this being done by a male country singer, and my flipping right past it without a second thought. Another thing that struck me was that I completely misinterpreted the song for the first half dozen listens or so. I thought of it as the singer (Dar) addressing her wilder sister. (It almost works, except for a few lines.) Only later did I realize it was written as one half of a couple addressing the other half. What else has Dar covered besides this and Nora? Neal np: Lisa Sanders - Isn't Life Fine (another from the CA coffeehouses. I didn't like her when I lived in CA years ago, and I wasn't that kean on her for most of the summer, but just before I left, I saw (and for some reason taped) a show of hers that I thought was wonderful. I've been hooked ever since. This is the first listen to the album though [thanks Jeff!], so I haven't got a handle on how the songs sound here. First was familiar and great, though I think I could have done without the layered chorus on Rainbow.) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Feb 1998 01:32:30 -0500 (EST) From: jason and jill Subject: Re: Stupid Question of the Year Award nomination. > Where can I buy a Happy Rhodes CD? > > (as in, need I bother with the likes of Virgin Records, or do I need to go > indie?) > > (or, better yet, should I just cross the border? What you save ordering from the 51st state you'd have to pay in extra postage anyway, and if your order from absound you might get your cds in time for summer. (Seriously, the last time I ordered from them it took a couple of months, several status requests, and it took a threat to cancel the order to just get them to admit they didn't have stuff in stock. I got pissed enough to call Tower in Toronto and everything I had ordered from ab Tower pulled off the shelf and was ready to ship.) No, you won't be ordering from some cute indie store with purple haired vegitarian anarchist clerks with belly button studs, but you will have your disks by Friday.
