He's renounced his Canadianhood for British residency to skip taxes, anyway. :) Of course, there are reasons other than failing memory of rock singers why organizers might want a pre-recorded anthem. As I recall when Sarah did the national anthem for a hockey game here in town a couple years ago she altered the line "God keep our land" to "Love keep our land", which got a lot of bible thumpers hot and bothered. :) Hehe. The reverse of lipsynching songs is, of course, the weird phenomenon of TV edits of songs. It's so strange hearing one of those - a song with all the lead vocals mixed out. That way a band can do a live teevee appearance, and there are no worries about getting all the instruments mixed properly. The singer performs live, and all the musicians just air band. - Neil K. - -- t e l a computer consulting + design * Vancouver, BC, Canada phone: (604) 254-1002 * email: tela@tela.bc.ca web: http://www.tela.bc.ca/tela/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jan 1998 06:55:10 EST From: Riphug Subject: Re: A&B sounds Although I haven't received anything from A&B Sound yet, I've received verification that both of my orders have been shipped in full. I went to a Sarah Slean/Tory Cassis show in my pyjamas, bathrobe, and big puffy Kermit the Frog slippers. I think that one qualified as the most comfortable Sarah Slean show ever. Picture this: a nice intimate room, ceiling festooned with literally hundreds of STRINGS of Christmas lights, lined with couches and poufy chairs, munchies of every description on all the tables, a birthday cake, a ton of pyjama'd people, of which it seemed like everyone knew each other. We went early, having been led to expect surprise performances by members of Moxy Fruvous, but it turned out that the Fruvey guys were just hanging out. My friend Rachel and I ended up sitting with Jian (pronounced jee-ON with a soft 'j'), Ghomeshi, who turned out to be a very friendly and interesting guy. We talked about the Toronto music industry, about its sometimes backstabbing nature and why a number of Toronto groups, like Moxy and the Barenaked Ladies, can draw huge crowds in the States and virtually nobody in their hometown. It was a really enlightening chat. Also hanging out (not with us) was Jason Plumb of another cool Canadian band, the Waltons. Sarah was breaking in a new cellist last night. I was expecting him to play the same stuff that Sharon, her original cellist, used to play, but he ended up doing his own thing, which sometimes worked for me and sometimes didn't. Sharon did a bit of a better job adding cello support but remaining in the background, but Mike had some cool new things of his own to add, including some eerie spacey effects on "Universe" I've never seen done on the cello before. After the show he called it his "gimmick." :-) Sarah was terrific, and like last time did an amazing cover of the Our Lady Peace song "Julia". Her version is really good, she slows it down and sings it with her trademark delicate vocals. For the second time, Tory Cassis blew me away with his incredible voice and captivating songs. This guy has GOT to put something out soon. For those of you here who are interested, plans are to release the new EP and the re-release of "Universe" in cd form concurrently. There'll be some guest artists on the new EP, hopefully including (heads up, Dan!) Sarah Harmer from Weeping Tile. It'll be a little while yet before that one comes out. Apparently Sarah's already recorded 11 songs for it. Michael typed, re: Holly Cole... >Just a quick note to say that I was blown away at Holly's >Boston show. Never having seen her live, I was unprepared >for just how good she was. Her voice was phenomenal, I think I said the same thing (even down to the wording!) about her performance at Lilith this summer. :-) She *was* phenomenal. I'd had one of her CDs for years but hadn't listened to it much, and ended up being blown away by her live performance. I know, it's pretty sad that as a Toronto 'phile I had to be introduced to her live shows in Buffalo, NY... unfortunately I can't afford her show here, it's $30 to get in. Re: the Women & Songs compilation CD... I didn't realize this was a canuck-only release. They're marketing that really heavily here, including TV spots, and it's front-and-centre at all the big record stores. I still haven't picked up a copy for the same reason I haven't bought the _In Between Dances_ or _Lit from Within_ CDs, I already have most of the stuff by the artists I'm interested in anyway. Speaking of canuck compilations, apparently there's one in the works for Sesame Street songs by Canadian artists like Jann Arden, Dayna Manning, Wide Mouth Mason, and the Odds. (Sarah's manager mentioned that when she saw my Kermit slippers yesterday). I'm looking forward to this one! (maybe someone will want to do some of Kevin B.'s instrumental stuff! :-) ) Neal asked: >Not knocking A&B Sounds, but is there anywhere else to mail order this >stuff that can get it faster? RID OF ME was excellent too (i don't mind Steve Albini's production) though i like 4 track demos better (charleydarbo accuses me of being in a lo-fi gutter, but to hell with him :) ). especially since 4 track demos contains REELING one of my fave songs by ms polly jean. of course i love DRYER/DEMONSTRATION the demo's to DRY almost more so than DRY, but perhaps that is just me lying in my gutter. her third album though is the one that is probably the most accessible, perhaps the one that most should start with, but in truth i found the production horribly slick and overpolished (FLOOD's work makes it sound like a generic NINesque pop-industrial sound without any of PJH's brilliant guitar and energy burst that the early albums have). i won't comment on her 4th collaborative piece with John Parish. kinda bland, though the lyrics are excellent (of course, since PJH wrote the lyrics). last when i was on the PJH list, someone said that PJ was tired of playing the guitar, and just wanted to sing. i think this is kinda sucky, but who knows how true or accurate this is. people change their mind all the time. love irvin >From: dgp@world.std.com >> I look forward to her [Suzanne Vega] 13 early songs CD that she talked about >> releasing, that will feature songs from the first two album period of her >> life, that she never released as she deemed them too personal at the time. > >I pray that one is Black Widow Station, a song which never made an >album, but she did play in many of her live performances. well last i was on the SV mailing list (this was two-three years ago, before NINE OBJECTS OF DESIRE was released, back when it was being called LOVE HOTEL) that was the idea. BLACK WIDOW STATION was actually cited specifically by ms VEGA herself, as a song she was going to put on there. the CD was to be simultaneous release with a "best of" CD to be put out at the same time (she said it wasn't to be called a greatest hits, because then it would only have two songs on it LUKA and the remixed TOM'S DINER). again this was awhile back, so i might be wrong or things might have changed drastically. anyone on the SV list no any more info? >I find her first album her best, although 99.9... is excellent. >Small Blue Thing, for example was a piece that captured me >completely. love small blue thing. but actually my favorite song isn't on any album of hers. LEFT OF CENTER, which only appeared on the soundtrack to PRETTY IN PINK is probably one of my all time favorite songs by her (though this might because it is one of the first songs i heard by her). >Letters to Cleo I believe is Boston-based, and had their second (3rd >maybe even) album out back in the Spring/Summer. I would put them in a mediocre range, but then i like juliana a lot. well i liked her more with THE BLAKE BABIES but her solo stuff is not bad too. If you like JULIANA i would probably recommend BELLY/TANYA DONELLY as they are friends and their voices are kinda similar. also MARY LOU LORD who i think is great fun and also collaborated with JULIANA. Scott Zimmerman calls her complain rock, but i still think its fun stuff. People have commented before, but her new EP is supposedly fab. >John inquired: > >> Who has recently done a cover of Ani's 32 Flavors? Mmm boy, but >that version has generated a buzz on the Ani lists... ouch. :) heard it on the radio yesterday and didn't like it as much as ani's. and i thought it was illegal to cover a song and not credit the author in the linear notes? especially since it is the single and everything as well. i hear that alana davis' albums is more jazz in feel than that song. apparently that song is the anomaly to the album. funny how her label felt obligated to make it a single. i guess that goes to show how strong a songwriter ani is. on a side note, i went out last sunday and some drag queen (kristi versace) did this song (the alana davis version). i gave her kudos for choosing this song, and the dress she wore (a fabulous lime green vinyl PVC cocktail/ball gown), but negative points for not choosing the original over the radio friendly cover. by the way when does LITTLE PLASTIC CASTLES come out by ani? >charley spewed: >I forgot about my number-three album because Vickie's had it for >_months_. >3. Less pop and more strangeness than her earlier albums but still >dancey. fabulous album. this has to be one album that i really think has fully lived up to its hype. one of the very very few. there was a huge media blitz when this came out (she was competing with JEWEL for most magazine covers in a three months period), but i think the public didn't quite get the album-as i don't think it has sold that well. BJORK's gone even more esoteric with this work (third solo album by BJORK is less accessible, third album by TORI is less accessible, third album by PJ HARVEY is...well actually more accessible. okay so that blew my theory. not to mention the fact that i really like this album and i could take or leave PJH and TORI's third try) nevertheless i have to say that my two favorite songs also happen to be the two singles (joga and bachlorette). with lyrics like "i am a fountain of blood in the shape of a girl" and "this state of emergency, how beautiful to be..." i could melt when i hear those words.... > Broadcast--Work and Non Work >More electronica, but great songs and a great voice. U.S.--stores that carry indie >>recordings. i could not agree more about LIDA HUSIK. i have yet to pick this CD up, but everytime i hear her stuff i think "i have to explore her more". i listened to this album at a used store and thought, this is pretty good, but i don't know if it will have staying power. perhaps i will check it out again. her previous album to FLY STEREOPHONIC under the name HUSIKEQSUE is released by caroline records electronica sublabel ASTRALWORKS and is a trip hop version of LIDA. check it out if you come across it. another case for mistaken identities, for whatever reason, i use to mix her up with ANN MAGNUSON (performance artist, musician, actress, and half of the band BONGWATER) maybe it was just their eclecticisms that made me mix them up. then again maybe it was all those hash brownies i ate when i was in college. <-just kidding. :) and to top it all off, Neile (or anyone else who is exploring the whole electronica genre with an ecto slant), check out RICKIE LEE JONES' GHOSTYHEAD (her recent trip hop album), as well as GUS GUS' POLYDISTORTION which is 4AD's answer to electronica. by the way does anyone have comments on MOLOKO? or DUBSTAR? the ad for MOLOKO (also on 4AD) compared the lead singer ROISIN as "a space age Nina Simone" (another singer that makes me melt) which truly intrigued me and DUBSTAR has gotten comparisons to both THE CARDIGANS and SAINT ETIENNE. both of which makes me extremely curious as to the sound. valid comparisons? worth checking into? also does anyone have the LOUNGE-A-PALOOZA CD compilation on HOLLYWOOD records? it features new tracks by PIZZACATO 5, POE, BEN FOLD FIVE and POLLY JEAN HARVEY with ERIC DREW FELDMAN (who is eric drew feldman?) as well as a bunch of other people. i am most interested in the PJH song, but was wondering if the whole CD was worth the cash.... that's it. hope everyone had a happy hoppin' new year. i slept in. well actually read my old comics. reaquainted myself with the SANDMAN. it was much fun. i am getting boring in my old age. no wonder i can never get a date. love in '98 irvin (who thought NATALIE MERCHANT's solo album was frightfully boring. the only song that i liked off of it was the single CARNIVAL. her solo show that have of her's on tape -from before recording her album- wasn't any better either. at least 10KM can site an interesting pre-album live performance, albeit a lackluster album and post album performance. NATALIE has two strikes against her in my book). np. For the rest of you, Falling Joys were one of our more popular indie bands of early 90s until they broke up some 2-3 years ago. They are a classic example of a band getting basically as far as they could in this country and finding themselves unable to expand overseas through a mixture of bad management, label politics and pure bad luck. Alanis would have suffered the same fate had she not vaulted Jagged Little Pill outside of her home turf.
