All the more uncanny, then, that Buckley's ghostly voice can be heard on a new album of poetry by the 19th-century master of the macabre. Eerier still is the fact that "beat" poet Allen Ginsberg, who visited Buckley to help coach him on reading the Poe verse, died less than a month after the recording. "Allen died way too prematurely, Jeff's (death) was tragic," said Hal Willner, who produced the album, "Closed on Account of Rabies." "It is beautiful that they worked together and that they knew each other," the legendary producer added. Buckley drowned last June after inexplicably wading into the Mississippi one night while in Memphis working on his second album. His first album, "Grace," had been critically acclaimed, and the son of '60s singer-songwriter Tim Buckley was expected to achieve a new measure of fame with his second release. Ginsberg, a founder along with Jack Kerouac of the beat literary movement in the 1950s and a leading light of the counterculture scene of the '60s, published more than 40 books of poetry, his most famous being "The Howl" and "Kaddish." He died March 5 from complications of live cancer at age 70. When he brought the two men together in the studio on Feb. 13, 1997, Willner said, Ginsberg added a new dimension to Buckley's reading of Poe's "Ulalume." A BEAUTIFUL MEMORY "In Jeff's performance you hear he had discovered how to read poetry," Willner told Reuters in an interview. Buckley's reading, with "walking dead" guitars in the background, was one of his last recordings. "With Allen in the session, Jeff's discovery comes through and leaves a beautiful memory in my head," Willner said. He said their deaths, along with that of writer William S. Burroughs, author of "Naked Lunch," made last year "terrible for everybody." It seems somehow fitting that there should be an air of death surrounding the album, which celebrates the chilling verse of the father of American Gothic literature. The two-CD spoken-word collection on Mouth Almighty Records also features actors Christopher Walken and Gabriel Byrne and singers Marianne Faithfull, Deborah Harry, Dr. John and Iggy Pop, along with Buckley, performing Poe's poems and short stories. Such well-known Poe works as "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Raven," "The Black Cat" and "The Masque of the Red Death" are given spine-tingling renditions that marry Poe's trademark mix of horror, madness and decay with Willner's unique vision of musical production. The title of the album is a reference to the disease that is believed to have killed the poet nearly 150 years ago at the age of 40 in Baltimore. "Now Edgar Allan Poe, by all contemporary accounts a loser, who died broke and unappreciated, gets a ghostly last laugh over his 19th-century critics with an unusual tribute offered by such 20th-century hipsters," People magazine said of the CD. MORE ROMANTIC APPROACH Willner said that, when he was growing up, he always associated Poe's words with such horror movie actors as Vincent Price, Peter Lore, Basil Rathbone and Boris Karloff. For the "Rabies" project, "I wanted to try different people with a more romantic approach," he said. The producer has spent the last 15 years assembling a body of work celebrating such eclectic artists as Italian film musician Nino Rota, German songwriter Kurt Weill and jazz greats Thelonius Monk and Charles Mingus. Willner explains his idiosyncratic view that merges music with words and images: "Think of an old variety show -- that's how I hear music. I get very bored very quickly ... I'm waiting for someone to come out and spin plates." In addition to his special projects, Willner has produced records for Faithfull, David Sanborn and Don Pullen and film scores for Robert Altman's "Short Cuts" and "Kansas City." And for the last 17 years he has produced sketch musical adaptations for TV's "Saturday Night Live." His next project is a six-CD set of the work of the late comedian Lenny Bruce, to be released this spring. "I'm not a musician or a composer myself," Willner said. "I'm just trying to make fantasy projects that I want to hear, and hopefully other people share my tastes." She was a cello player with her in addition to >Kevin Fox on violin. The string instruments do it for me everytime, Actually, Kevin was on cello too, which I believe is his main instrument (although he's a damn good guitarist too). It was a rare dual (but not quite duel*ling*) cello night for Sarah. That was a real treat because Kevin is a smoking cellist, and his latest gig before doing the solo thing again after 7 years of doing support work was backing up Dayna Manning on cello. Hope you can come out for Kevin's show on Monday, cas, he'll finally have his full band out again, complete with bass (I say finally but the only time he's ever played with them all was just over a week ago). Oh yeah one note about Kevin's stuff because I don't think I mentioned it here: I had a rare first for me the first time I saw Kevin play solo- a *bowed vibraphone*. I've never seen that before, and the effect was amazing. Very cool. As cas has said, Kevin is an electrifying performer, which is all the more impressive considering last week was the first time he's performed his own material in *7 years*. His style is not unlike Duncan Sheik's. Mellow crooning might be one way of putting it, absolutely laden with pop hooks and enhanced by a great voice. He's currently working on his first recording. >The Toronto indie scene is fantastic... I love the musical talent >that is in this town... now I've found a local scene comprable to >the one I know in Boston. :) When I was living in Kingston I had no idea Toronto had such a good music scene, I only made it down here for select shows by out-of-town artists. What a luxury it's been though. Now I see more shows by local artists than shows by out-of-towners, which is impressive since in cases of conflict I almost always choose an out-of-town act over a local act. This was released through the label, Third Contact, owned by her good friend, Larry "Synergy" Fast. Last year Joy appeared on a number of dates as part of the Lilith Fair which was very successful for her. In my most recent communications with Larry the two of them are endeavoring to get back the rights to "Tender City" which was the album released on Private Music. If they are successful, the album will be re-released on Third Contact! Keep your fingers crossed.
