I had the welcome bonus of meeting another 'phile, cas... hi cas! I hope you'll post your impressions of the show so everyone knows it's not just me and Dan who love Sarah S live! One side note of interest, which brings up a question I've been meaning to ask for awhile now... I know a lot of you are fans of the Toronto band Moxy Fruvous, and have seen them a few times live. Anyone catch an opening act by the name of Tory Cassis? He's an absolutely incredible soulful bluesey-folk singer from Toronto with a great voice and passionate deliver. Anyway Sarah's played with him a couple of times, and I guess he must have recommended her to Moxy because Jean Ghomeshi (I think that's spelled right) from Moxy was there taking in her show last night. :-) Steve, hoping that Cas will post a review so I won't have to ;-) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Steve Ito | Check out Toronto artists Sarah Slean & Emm Gryner Toronto, Canada | at NORTHERN SOUNDS: http://members.xoom.com/northern ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jan 1998 12:24:17 -0500 (EST) From: isometric plaything Subject: Re: Sarah Slean/Kevin Fox/Tory Cassis Hi Steve! and everyone @ ecto, > Steve, hoping that Cas will post a review so I won't have to ;-) Oh man, check out the peer pressure!! :) Well, I'm not too good at doing concert reviews, but I'll try. :) First, it took me about 20 minutes to find Ces't What?. I walked in the wrong direction twice... yay me. Ok, so I finally find the place, and I can't feel anything because it was like 1 million below 0 outside (before the wind chill). Kevin Fox opened the show, and from the first note, I was impressed. He was joined with a violinist and a drummer (who is the drummer for Tory Cassis). The only complaint I have about his set was that the songs were too short. :( Otherwise, he was very into the music, and I hated to see him leave the stage. Sarah Slean was up sortly afterwards. Besides being very talented at the keyboard, she's quite cute, too *grin*. She talked to the audience a lot, and joked and told us stories. She is very good in front of the mic, but I think she seemed a bit nervous in front of a croud... but she handled it very well. She reminded me of a cross between Tori Amos and Sarah McLauclan. She was a cello player with her in addition to Kevin Fox on violin. The string instruments do it for me everytime, and I was hooked... even if she was up there by herself, she would've been just as good. She has a beautiful voice... that is what reminded me of Sarah M. Ok, enough reviews from me. I'm sure it was not good, as far as reviews go, but hey, if Steve keeps making me do this, they're bound to improve! :) On the subject of Tory Cassis and Moxy Fruvous.... I've seen Tory play with Moxy in Rochester last year sometime. I was definately impressed by him, and I'm definately looking forward to seeing him play again as long as I'm in the Toronto area. The Toronto indie scene is fantastic... I love the musical talent that is in this town... now I've found a local scene comprable to the one I know in Boston. :) till next time... - -cas ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jan 1998 12:51:12 EST From: Riphug Subject: Fwd: New Happenings at Ladyslipper #1, January 1998 This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - --part0_884886673_boundary Content-ID: <0_884886673@inet_out.mail.aol.com.1> Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Looking for something new? Opinion : What the hell is sarah doing playing at Towson Center...i think that that is the Basketball gym for Towson State University...Towson doesn't seem like a very hip musical place in regards to stuff like Sarah...I'd expect her to play in Baltimore before she played there...and plus, this date seems to be the only one for the Philly, DC area fans, other than the Richmond show. Maryland just sucks ass in regards to having good musical taste, so that surprises me as well (for those of you who are MD transplants and who haven't been born here or grown up here, this comment doesn't apply to you...you managed to escape the wrath of this dullard state). Fact : the Great Expectations sdtk is out now. It has two things by Tori on it, Duncan Sheik, Mono, and lots of other groups. Opinion : the sdtk will be the next Romeo and Juliet type sdtk...after the Duncan Sheik single is played out (or maybe even while it's being played to death...and is it just me, or does the single sound just like every other Duncan Sheik song...whiny), Mono is gonna hit it big with their song from the Sdtk...they have a new album coming out in february and i heard their song on the World Cafe today...kinda has a James Bond movie theme song deal going with it (full production and instrumentation, overblown almost) with a sultry waify female vocal...very catchy like Lovefool. Fact : My mom is making sushi tonight. YAY! :) Opinion : Holly Cole's new album (finally bought it), Dark Dear Heart, is a departure for her from her usual jazzy self...i don't know if i like it yet...i think i do because i just love her voice...but it just seems too pop to be her...i miss the jazz. Fact : Susan Werner is playing at Mays Chapel in Timonium, MD on the 30th of this month. I hope that i can make it. I think that she might be close to signing with a new record label. Anyone in the DC area have any info on Holly Cole's concert date in DC at the Metro Cafe this coming monday....or her show on Tuesday in Philly at the Painted Bride....any help would be much appreciated.
