The area around Third Street Jazz was being being torn up and rebuilt for a couple of *years*. The parking situation was terrible--of the three times I went there by car my car was ticketed twice and towed once. The only time my car has ever been towed other than for mechanical breakdown was when I tried going to Third Street Jazz. In the past year or so the selection wasn't great. (The last time I went was around six months ago and I was looking for some run-of-the-mill Miles and Trane cds and I left empty-handed--couldn't find anything I was looking for downstairs, either.) The location wasn't great--if you were in Center City on foot it was many blocks from pretty much any other shop you would want to go to. The articles about Third Street also bemoaned people shopping by price, but that's a rather spurious argument. HMV and Tower charge very high prices ($16.99 for regular current titles, $17.99 for anything by a higher-profile band or artists). If anyone is saving money on cds in Philadelphia, it's from buying from independants Philadelphia Record Exchange, Muchnick's, Cd's to go, Classical Choice, etc. I won't mention a couple of other ones located near the Gallery b/c my office represents the owners. Waaaaah!!! We have a gig in Philly next Saturday, and I was looking forward to hitting 3rd Street Jazz. *sigh* > I go to my favorite local indie store, and the owner says hi to me by > name. Sounds like my fave CD store, 33 Degrees in Austin. When I would be there, Dan would never fail to put on something that tempted me. It's doing pretty well, I hear, in a bigger locale than it started, with lots of in-stores. It doesn't carry anything that ever got near the Top 40, intentionally, but it's the first place to hit for CDs for anyone into music of any fringe in Austin. Wish I could find a store out here like that -- though I read an interestingg article in yesterday's Washington Post about a new place in CD, DCCD. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Jan 1998 14:36:32 -0500 From: Dan Stark Subject: Sarah Slean and Folk Festival dates: MI & ON Hi, Apologies to those away from the Great Lakes area, but these two shows seem like they may appeal to ectophiles around my region. First, SARAH SLEAN is making a rare appearance within striking distance of Detroit, Toledo, and surrounding areas next Friday, January 16. She will be appearing at the Terradactyl Lounge in Windsor, Ontario, just across the river from beautiful downtown Detroit, opening for Pursuit Of Happiness singer Moe Berg. I have made several 4-hour drives to Toronto to catch her shows, and it has been worth it every time! Sarah rarely tours outside of Toronto at this point, and the Windsor date is probably the closest she will get to the U.S. for some time, so try to make it if you're in the area. E-mail me if you plan to come and need directions or any other info. Also, in case it hasn't been mentioned, I have heard that Patty Griffin has been added to the bill for the Ann Arbor Folk Festival at the Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor, MI on January 31st. Other performers, according to the web site, include: Paula Cole Doc Watson and David Grisman Guy Clark Cheryl Wheeler Chris Smither Dee Carstensen Karen Pernick The Nields Great Big Sea Tickets are $25 and $55 available from the Michigan Union Ticket Office at 313-763-TKTS, or through TicketMaster. Official info is at http://www.a2ark.org , although I notice they don't have Patty listed on the web site yet. The show is presented by The Ark in Ann Arbor, and if you want to confirm the lineup they can be reached at 313-761-1800. Many of the performers at this show traditionally get only short sets so if you aren't interested in the whole package this may not be the best value for you to travel for. Best! Dan ------------------------------ Date: 10 Jan 1998 16:29:14 EDT From: Ariana@excelsior.net Subject: Mistle Thrush I won tickets to see Greg Garing at the Mercury Lounge in NYC from WFUV. Mistle Thrush and Ours were also playing. I recently bought Mistle Thrush's latest cd for a friend's birthday and listened to it first. (I knew he wouldn't mind because he does things like that himself). I really liked them. So when I heard that I could win tickets and it was on a Friday I really wanted to go. They were very good and they did alot of songs from their newest album. Fortunately for me I got to sit in the very front. Unfortunately for the band not many people showed up for them. I didn't bother to stay for the other 2 bands because I lost my seat to buy a t shirt and a cd. I didn't feel like going back inside since the crowd was too big. So I bought a t-shirt and cd from Scott from the band. He was so nice. I hesitated to buy the cd because I could have it taped from my friend. But I realized it's not much money and the band could use the money. Well he was going to give it to me for free. How nice is that! I didn't let him though. It would not be right. I told him how much I liked the music etc etc... He was extremely nice. By the way I am trying to think of how to describe their music. Honestly alot of Ecto people would not be into their music. They are not on the folky side of ecto. There music I guess is similar to Rose Chronicles and Chimera. In fact they thank Chimera on the album. I understand that they use to sound like Siouxsie and the Banshees. Now I have to find their other albums without mail ordering. I hope it's possible. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Jan 1998 17:08:57 -0800 From: Bill Subject: Re: Ivy and Holly McNarland >A question: what is the longest you have kept a CD you have bought without >listening to it? I bought Kate Bush's Hounds of Love sometime in 1990 (or was it '89?) and, upon the first playing, I was rather disappointed by it; I guess I was craving a continuation of The Kick Inside. And so Hounds of Love sat inert in my CD rack until last week (this being 1998), when, thanks to the inspiration brought on by the ecto-postings, I gave it a spin. What great sounds! It was like a late Christmas present from The Universe; I spent the whole week playing those sounds in my head. So, I guess, in my case, the answer is 7 or 8 years. - - Bill. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Jan 1998 17:11:33 -0800 From: Bill Subject: re: Subject: 18 cds >And see someone about clearing out the dregs of that catholic upbringing. >It could cause you serious anguish in the future. Funny you should mention that; I was just talking about this store today at the DC ectogathering (sorry you couldn't make it...hope the show in Bal'more went well). I dropped into DCCD this afternoon (it's just a few blocks from my appartment, and almost directly across the street from Flying Saucer Discs). It's...not bad. The still have a ton of empty bins, and a relatively small used section. I looked for a number of discs I was interested in, but didn't see any of them. I did, however, score a used Maria McKee disc for $5. The biggest bonus of the visit was that when I walked in, I immediately recognized good music: they were playing Laurie Anderson's _Big Science_! Oh, and when I took my disc to the counter to pay for it, the guy started talking about Lone Justice...definite bonus points (on top of the ones he got for putting on old Laurie Anderson) for actually knowing something about the history of a relatively obscure artist and the relatively obscure band she used to be in. I suspect the store will improve with age. - -------- And now on to a brief recap of today's DC ectogathering. We had about 10 folks show up, including Tim and his s.o., Chip Lueck, Neal Copperman, myself, craig, and chris (the *true* dc ecto contingent... ;-), woj 'n meth (who showed up 2 hours late), and of course, our hostess, Val Nozick. 'Twas a nice, mostly mellow party, with plenty of good music (including John 'n Mary's _Victory Gardens_, _Rearmament_, _Red Hand_ (Ingrid Karklins), _Not a Pretty Girl_ (Ani DeFranco), and a disc by Squonk Opera). Val's digital camera was out for a good portion of the party, so I suspect some pix will appear somewhere at some point. One topic of discussion started out about Clarion (the sci-fi/fantasy writing workshop) and eventually mutated to Geoff Ryman's hypertext "novel" _253_ (which for some reason, I was mistakenly referring to as _268_. Oops). This is a fascinating piece of experimental literature, which is designed to be read in a wholly non-linear fashion. The novel is available for free on the 'net, and as I promised those at the party who were interested, here's the URL: http://www.ryman-novel.com 'Twas a great day with fun company, and I was sorry to have cut it short, leaving about 7:30. I think everyone else was getting ready to go find somewhere to have dinner, and I trust that the rest of the evening was as much fun as the afternoon... jeff - -- |Jeffrey C.
