Victoria's new album "Musings Of A Creekdipper" is to be released this coming Tuesday. It is a wonderful new addition to her catalogue. A beautiful cardbord sleeve holds the disc. She does a cover of the old chestnut "Nature Boy". My favorite is "Rainmaker". The album ends with "Blackbirds Rise", which is the song which appeared on the Live in Toronto album as "Graveyard".. The album is produced by Victoria Williams & Trina Shoemaker (Daniel Lanois' engineer) Victoria is doing two big shows this month.. January 22 at The Roxy in LA. January 28 at the Bottom Line (rescheduled from the 12th) These should be pretty grand full band affairs. There was an Iron Horse (northhampton, MA) show which was cancelled. due to the rescheduling. Looking forward to your analysis.. Additionally, she falls under the "when bad things happen to good people" heading. I've been told that she has faced some very trying events in her life that could have embittered a person of lesser faith or benevolence. That being said, I've only heard a few of her songs; both sung by her and covered by others. All indications are that she is a tremendous songwriter, but I'm struggling with the voice and am hoping it grows on me a la Neil Young. I'm hanging in there. :) Happy New Year...Java n.p. I'm not completely familiar with the originals, so I won't comment about that, but I totally disagree that those 2 songs covered by VW are unpalatable. The songs might seem schmaltzy (? I'm not sure what your complaint of the originals is) done by someone else, but Victoria Williams sings with such passion and love that I'm hooked every time I listen. If I had my VW cds here at work I could be more specific, but I especially love when she sings "it's nature's way of receiving you/it's nature's way of deceiving you" or something like that. I don't know... it just draws me into the music somehow. No complaints on her covers here! Barb ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Jan 1998 14:12:59 -0600 (CST) From: "Joseph S. Zitt" Subject: COMMA in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and (maybe?) NYC The vocal ensemble, Comma (Tom Bickley, Matthew Ross Davis, and I) will be performing at Normal's Red Room in Baltimore (MD, USA) this Saturday evening. We'll be presenting some of the most cutting-edge vocal music and improvisation you've ever heard. (And, if anyone's interested, taking pre-orders for our CD, "(voices)", due later this month.) As the Normals Web site ( http://www.normals.com/ ) says: COMMA (Matt Davis, Joe Zitt and Tom Bickley) are experimental vocalist/sound poets with a huge range of sounds and structures--from Gregorian Chant and Tibetan-like drones to textured wiggly squawking. In addition to our own compositions and improvisations, we'll be performing works by Pauline Oliveros and John Cage. Saxophonist John Dierker will be opening with a rare solo performance. Normals is, I'm told, on the corner of 31st and Greenmount in Baltimore, which can be easilly reached by taking Charles St. north to 31st and turning right, continuing down 31st until you're in the block before Greenmount (which is a T intersection), where you will see Normals on your right. It's also available at a number of independent stores. (I bought it at an indie in Boulder.) I bring up the indies because one of my favorites is now going out of business (or may be out of business by this time) -- Third Street Jazz and Rock in Philadelphia. Tom Moon of the Philadelphia Inquirer put it best in his article on the store's demise (and I think he may have overhead me when he mentioned overhearing a customer say, "What in the world happened here?"). Brief history -- this store opened in 1974, and I discovered it in 1977. I was a teenager looking for off-the-wall music in the late 70's - -- everything from Kate Bush to traditional Celtic music. And this store had it. And the employees knew the music. I left Philly in 1979, but I still visit about twice a year, and I always tended to drop a small wad in that store. It was an employee of Third Street who recommended I buy my first Susan Werner cd when he saw what else I had in my hands. (It was Live at Tin Angel, btw.) I bought my first Grey Eye Glances (then Sojourn) cd there after having heard them on WXPN. I went there on Dec. 26 planning to check out local artists -- the new June Rich cd, maybe Mary Arden Collins, etc. Instead, I discovered that most of the merchandise was gone, and the store would be gone soon also. I know that there are other stores in the Philly area besides Borders, HMV, and Tower. (Might I add that the Philly HMV, imho, is a fairly boring store? Maybe it's because the first HMV store I visited was the London Oxford Street store, but the Philly store seems fairly so-so.) But Mad's and Main Street are not right in the middle of Center City the way Third Street was. Anyhow, I will miss it. Btw, when I was there last month, I had my nineteen-year-old nephew in tow. He'd never been to this store before, and I thought I was going to show him a treat for his ears (despite a quick drain for his wallet). Too bad he missed it. He's grown up buying cd's at Tower, Borders, and HMV, and well, not to knock those stores -- I have bought cd's in all of them, but as Moon stated in his article, will the buyer in Columbus, Ohio, stock the cd's Third Street did? Do the employees have the same love of music? Yes, some do, but it's just not the same to me at least. I go to my favorite local indie store, and the owner says hi to me by name. He pulls out cd's by new artists that he thinks I might like. (He's never proven me wrong, btw.) There's just a personal touch I've never found at the chains. Okay -- rant over. But after seeing Third Street's demise (they were the best place to find rare import Renaissance cd's, after all :), I just had to plug the indies. Carry on! :) Ellen ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #10 *************************
