(!) so check it out - they also still had copies of the Nields and Holly McNarland's Stuff. the occasional lurker who pops out occasionally to post reviews, eric ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Jan 1998 10:41:52 -0500 (EST) From: Magenta <4dm@qlink.queensu.ca> Subject: New to the list and tentative Anybody interested in a little Victoria Williams analysis? There's a wesite at http://www3.rbn.com/realaid/ where you can donate money via credit card to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, the network that Tori herself started) and get net access to 13 of Tori's videos from the time that you donate until January 20. It uses Real Player 5.0, and there's a download connection at the site. The videos include the UK version of "Cornflake Girl". - --Neile n.r. Theodore Sturgeon, _Godbody_ n.p. This one should be very special & all Bay Area folks should consider attending! Cindy Lee Berryhill & Renatta Bratt will be performing in a very rare duo performance. For those unfamiliar with Renatta, she is an incredibly talented cellist & was responsible for much of the flavor on Cindy Lee's "Marysville" & "Garage Orchestra" albums. They've not performed live together as a duo in several years & this is guaranteed to be an inspired night. James Cribb's email address is: jkcribb@twomp.com Anyone interested in attending can contact James and RSVP. Capacity is limited so reservations are requested. James will supply directions upon recieving your RSVP. As all previous LRTs, a $10 per person donation (to the musicians) is required. Also, for you Los Angeles area folks, Cindy Lee Berryhill & her amazing Garage Orchestra will be performing tommorrow night (1/9/98) at Genghis Cohen in L.A. I believe tickets are $7. For those in the area, these gigs should not be missed! Wish I was on the other coast to join in the fun...... Enjoy! It was on coollist for a while but they the messages never went through so now it is manual and really time consuming, I haven't been running it because I was on vacation...but anyway, I haven't been able to find a decent server that is also free and was wondering if any kind souls out there would be able to help me. If so, email me privately at rkb200@is5.nyu.edu thank you! :) Rachel "help me kill my time/cos i'll never be fine" -- elliott smith, "some song" "now I don't care about you/I got my huggy bear t-shirt on" -- helen love, "formula one racing girls" - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- my Mary Lou Lord page is at http://pages.nyu.edu/~rkb200/ To join Some Jingle Jangle List, the Mary Lou Lord mailing list, email me your with your name and email address. :) Email me for information about my zine I'M NOT WAITING. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Jan 1998 19:52:08 -0800 From: Michael Pearce Subject: Vonda Shephard Well, I found a copy of Vonda's "The Radical Light" from 1992, and the first song on it is the theme from Ally McB. Other songs were used in the show. I like it, but I think if I had heard this before seeing her, I would have thought "nothing spectacular." I like her more because of the visual performances on the show, and I think she would be fantastic in person. Hope she tours for her next record, whenever that is. I'd like to see an all-ballad release. I agree and I'm also relatively new to Vic- So maybe we should start by skipping her, um, rather unusual vocal technique, and zero in on Victoria as a gifted songwriter, right up there IMHO with Dar W. and Jonatha B. Which leads me to wonder: Why does an artist with her songwriting talents not just do covers, but do covers of works of questionable merit? I am a major admirer of Louis Armstrong, but _What A Beautiful World_ is not one of his defining triumphs, and Randy California's _Nature's Way_ was something that I rather hoped I would never have to deal with again. And not even Vic's considerable abilities make them palatable. That carping having been done, I have to say that your post made me drag out my CDs of "Loose" and "This Moment In Toronto", and I am back to wondering why I just *love* her music despite what my spouse calls "way bizarre" vocals... BTW, I am in the process of trying to unsubscribe from the Victoria Williams mailing list, a moderated and not exactly inspiring entity, particularly when compared to Ecto.. Gawd, I *LOVE* this list, and have been recruiting likely suspects from the KaTe and Dar and Jonatha boards on AOL with gusto, and with considerable success- This place sells itself. I was an unmastered advance copy of Victoria's new CD. It was on CDROM media (i.e. not a pressed CD). The artwork and CD label were laser printed... The track listing is: 1. Perrywinkle Sky 2. Rainmaker 3. Train Song 4. Grandpa in the Cornpatch 5. Nature Boy 6. Tree Song 7. Last Word 8. Kashmir's Corn 9. Let It Be So 10. Hummingbird 11. Allergic Boy Since the CD is scheduled to be released in just a couple of weeks, I won't spoil it for anyone. On another note, Victoria will be playing at the Iron Horse in Northampton, MA sometime in the future... - -Jeff ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #9 ************************
