[Neile Graham ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 07 Jan 1998 02:09:38 +0000 From: charleydarbo Subject: crow flush I just had to tell someone about this very cool experience I had walking home from the train station tonight. I have my headphones plugged in, and the new _Spiritualized_ album almost loud enough to make my eyes water. As I cross Front Street in downtown Wheaton and pass under the maple trees in the City Hall lawn, I hear this white noise coming throught the music--a noise I've never noticed before. Just as I realize it's not on the CD, I look up and see this ragged, roiling black cloud moving up and away from the trees, continuing to grow as it rises and rounds back on itself. Apparently I've flushed a crow roost, and hundreds--possibly even thousands--of them take to the air from the three or four trees they've packed themselves densely into for the night. There are enough of them that the sound of their wingbeats penetrates my discman's headphones, even with the volume set at "bleed". I stand there, just this side of the nearest tree, head thrown back, mouth agape, and watch this unearthly black cloud shredding and spinning against the midnight sky, lit from below by the streetlights. Suddenly I think of those charred black bits of paper that drift up from the rising heat of the fire that's burned them. I watch for a minute or two, too astonished to move, until the crows begin to settle back into their trees, like film of a smoking coal chimney run backwards. I continue on my way and pass beneath the largest tree, still looking up. I pause again and stare up into the tree, whose branches are as densely festooned with crows as they will be with maple leaves in May. I stare for a moment longer, and then I have a thought. I look down at the ground and quickly resume my walk home, slipping and sliding on the white-spattered sidewalk. - --charleydarbo n.p. Good for you!! A show in the US, "Public Eye with Bryant Gumbel" is doing a story about Lisa tonight (Wednesday). I assume (hope) it will be hard-hitting because the host, Gumbel and the story's reporter, Kristen Jeanette Meyers, are both very well respected for being direct, to-the-point and for not fluffing things up. $cientology's "stars" often tend to dazzle some shows into airhead land (i.e. $cientology^H^H^H^HEntertainment Tonight), doing nothing but reading scieno press releases. Since Lisa will almost certainly be the lead story, perhaps Ecto folks in the US could watch the beginning of "Public Eye" before turning to "Ellen" at the half hour to see Sarah. I fear that very few people will see this program anyway because of the competition CBS has at the top of the hour (3rd Rock, Drew Carey, Nova, Party of Five, etc.) but every little bit of publicity helps keep Lisa from being forgotten and even if only, say, a few thousand people watch, that's another handful who will know about her. Judging by this, and your e-mail address, you're from Australia! Please tell me about this album! I'm a big Deborah Conway fan, and I have her two previous solo albums as well as her Ultrasound project (which I just received today as a Christmas gift from my Australian pen-pal!) I had no idea Deborah had a new album out. Is it very recent? Thanks for the tip! Michael n.r. Plays Well With Others by Alan Gurganus n.p. Hi, I've heard mention of a band called Elysian Fields on this list, and I'm considering buying a CD of theirs, Bleed Your Cedar. Or maybe their EP. Someone must have said something about them that made me think I'd like them and made the name stick in my head, but I can't remember what it was now. So I'd like to know a little more about them. They're not on the ectophile music guide, so could some of you who are familiar with them, and can describe musical style, tell me what they're like? What's the genre - rock, acoustic, ethereal, some blend, etc? Is it guitar-based, or piano, or synthesizer, etc? Fast-paced and percussive, or moody and meandering? What are the vocals like? Male and/or female? High or low voices, sweet or gritty, etc? Give me details! I don't like the EP that much, but I quite like _Bleed Your Cedar_. It's loungey, smokey, bluesy, torchy. The lead singer, Jennifer Charles, is called sultry in a lot of reviews I've read of the album. Anyone else up to describing it? - --Neile n.p. Cranes, _Sartre's La Tragedie d'Oreste et Electre_ n.r.
