The sunny surface is deceptive; Dominique Durand's singing and lyrics provide an intellectual and emotional depth that is missing from Fountain of Wayne's output (or "That Thing You Do," for that matter.) That's why I found it so compelling and included "Apartment Life" on my best of '97 list. I don't know if these qualities would make themselves fully heard at a listening station. This was, incidentally, one of the albums I bought last year without listening beforehand. I should note that, in light of the debate last month over the supposed climate of intimidation that led to at least one high-level defection from our ranks, I do not mean to criticise Joyce's musical tastes or her means of evaluating music. I simply wanted to point out that listening stations have their limits, and sometimes you really have to live with an album for a while to appreciate what a recording artist is up to. I know that. That is, I know that the one-shot sampling of music at a listening station is limited as a way to evaluate music, and tends to favor immediately-accessible music over the kind that requires several listenings before it grows on you. This happens to me all the time - I'll buy an album because I love one song on it, and after a while of listening, it turns out that another song on the album has more staying power. And if I'd heard just the second song at a listening station, I might not have given the album a chance. In fact I do plan to listen to Ivy again because there was definitely something I liked about it. It just didn't sweep me off my feet. And at $13.99 or more a pop, I do want to feel convinced about it. No offense taken, by the way! Yes, it's true that you can still order "Blue Apples" from Prime CD, but technically-speaking, the CD is out-of-print. They only pressed up a limited number of copies, and as far as VPK knows, they won't be pressing any more once the initial pressing sells out. VPK doesn't have any extra copies to sell herself now because she had to purchase them from the label to sell them at her shows and she just couldn't afford to keep doing that indefinitely. Although, as I mentioned previously, copies do turn up in Borders Books & Music sometimes, your only other real alternative is mail order at this point. So I guess Prime CD will just keep selling copies until they run out of them, same as me. I think VPK said that the rights to the album will revert back to her in five years or so, and then she can re-release it herself if she wants to, but I doubt she will because it's been released twice already. I think she'd rather just move on! ;) I still have a few copies left of the Prime CD version of "Blue Apples" that I'd be happy to part with for $13 a piece. If anyone wants one, just e-mail me. It may interest y'all to know that when you buy "Blue Apples" from me (or her latest CD, "This Guardian At Noon," for that matter), VPK makes $10 profit per CD, which is a lot more than she makes per copy from Prime CD (or she would from any record company, most likely) when they sell them for her. I have low overhead, so I can move 'em for less! ;) Getting back to the subject at hand, the very first original release of "Blue Apples" is _seriously_ out-of-print. VPK pressed those up herself and they're long gone now. It's too bad, really, because I personally prefer the first release to the Prime CD version; the song order is completely different and the original mixes sound a lot cleaner to me. (Prime CD remixed several of the songs and completely redid the packaging for the re-release as well.) Thanks for all your e-mails, I appreciate the input and support and so does VPK! The duo, twisted tutu (Eve Beglarian and Kathy Supov=E9) performing at: HERE 145 Avenue of the Americas New York, NY. January 22, 23, 24 8pm I am copying now from the press release: HERE presents CULTUREMART featuring the Common Sense Composers' Collective and twisted tutu in: CLOSED-CAPTIONED, A Music Performance Event An evening of interactive electronics, singing, storytelling, improvisation, keyboard virtuosity, movement, and digital sound performed by the subversive new music duo twisted tutu. Closed Captioned is the result of a year-long collaboration with the Common Sense Composers' Collective, the acclaimed group of eight emerging composers. twisted tutu is composed of composer/performer Eve Beglarian and pianist/keyboardist Kathleen Supov=E9. The performance will feature eight New York City premiers by Dan Becker, John Halle, Ed Harsh, Marc Mellits, Belinda Reynolds, Randall Woolf, Carolyn Yarnell, and Eve Beglarian. Developed in collaborative workshops over the last 16 months, these new works have been specially designed to address twisted tutu's mission: the development of a cutting-edge new music aimed at the preoccupations and obsessions of the 90's. And I'll also throw in a little about twisted tutu--they are fabulous!: Composer/performer Eve Beglarian and pianist/keyboardist Kathleen Supov=E9 have formed a unique and innovative collaboration called twisted tutu. Utilizing their varied abilities of composing, singing, interactive electronics, stage movement, keyboard virtuosity, improvisation and sound design, they have created a cutting-edge new music group. Their goal is as follows: to be and to remain at the forefront of physicality, spirituality, and sexuality in music making. Breaking the boundaries between high and popular culture and between old and new is also central to their work. twisted tutu has just returned from a three-month sojourn traveling and performing all over the continental United States. Two new CD's feature their work: the new "Emergency Music" release on CRI, and Eve Beglarian's solo release, "Overstepping" on OO Discs. Kyle Gann of the Village Voice calls twisted tutu "Downtown's startling new discovery." You can find out more about Eve Beglarian by going to her web page at OO's s= ite http://wwww.hear.com/o.o. Kathy Supov=E9 has a CD entitled "Figure 88" on CRI and you can find out mor= e about it by going to their web page http://www.composersrecordings.com Oh and alright, while I'm at it, a little about Common Sense: Common Sense is a SF/NY based collective of eight emerging composers. Although well pedigreed, completing music programs at Yale, Harvard, and Columbia, they emerged from their schooling dissatisfied and restless. Now in their fifth year, the main objective of the group has been to explore alternative ways of conceiving and completing new works. Each year the eight composers of Common Sense seek out and collaborate with a different performing ensemble. the music resulting from their first project was released on compact disc by the CRI label on their "Emergency Music Series" in January 1997. They have since gone on to undertake projects with groups as diverse as the American Baroque period instrument ensemble and the acclaimed Meridian Arts Ensemble. In 1995 Common Sense extended their philosophy of collaboration and bridge-building to the creation of OPUS 415, an annual SF Bay Area new music marathon designed to showcase the diverse voices of Bay Area composers. They have a website at http://www.commonsense.org Whew! I've heard a little bit ,if not all of each piece and WOW; it's SOME program! It's going to be a really incredible show.
