Once I have recovered from the financial hari-kiri that I seem to inflict upon myself at Christmas, I shall begin stocking up on some suitable South African music and then contact the list again. As far as I know, there isn't anything else of Jennifer Ferguson's available on CD (at least, there wasn't when I bought "Hand Around the Heart"), but I will definitely make some more enquiries... There is another SA band with the strange name of "Q-Cumba Zoo". They are *definite* ecto material. Has anyone else heard of them? Are there any other specific requests for SA music that I should look out for? Lastly, I want to thank all the wonderful people in the list who have introduced me to all sorts of ectophilic music that I simply would never have heard of (let alone *heard*) if it weren't for ecto. I can say without fear of exaggeration that this mailing list has (through the music) changed my life. For the better! And *that's* why *I* love ecto :) Take care, Robert P.S. I found the answer to my "Arthur Spivak query" in Tori's "All These Years" biography. P.P.S. In another weird piece of ecto-synchronicity(?), I discovered that the bass player on Kate Bush's The Red Shoes used to play bass for one of my favourite bands, Simple Minds. At least, I *think* there can't be too many bass players called John Giblin around - but hey, I've been wrong before :) Robert Stewart (csaris@upe.ac.za www.cs.upe.ac.za/csaris) Dept. of Computer Science and Information Systems University of Port Elizabeth South Africa ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Dec 1997 01:21:21 -0500 (EST) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Cowboy Junkies/Lisa Cerbone Given JeffW's re-post from Lisa Cerbone yesterday, it's probably not much of a surprise to people that I saw The Cowboy Junkies at the 9:30 Club in DC last night. I'm almost completely unfamiliar with the CJ canon, not owning a single album of theirs. So any effort to name names should be taken with a grain of salt. Anyway, I've always thought the Junkies had a nice sound, but was never sure it would work for a whole album. I was convinced tonight, as they played a wonderful 90 minute set. There's not too much to say about them live. It's just like you might expect given their music and that they perform it well. There were only 4 people in the band, which was apparently more stripped down than usual, so the arrangements weren't as complicated. There was more variety than I expected too, with songs ranging from poppier to bluesier to more rocking, but all still within the confines of the CJ sound. Though there are really only two different types of songs, those Margot sings standing up, and those she sings sitting down. (She joked that the new songs were still so fresh that she didn't know which was to sit for.) People had bought her a couple of bouquets of flowers, which added a nice touch to the stage, particularly the lovely white roses. She came out and adjusted them before starting in on the first song. She joked that it was strange to be invited to play a New Years show. Usually they want bands that are a bit happier. Apparently 9:30 approached them while they were putting the finishing touchs on their next album, so they were a bit rusty on playing live. Margot claimed to have a really terrible memory, and had a book of lyrics in front of her. I was a bit put off by that at first, but she made jokes about it herself, and didn't seem to use it much. People would yell out songs, and she'd say "I'm sorry, I only know the songs in the book." She did tell a funny story about forgetting every single line of "Sweet Jane" on a Canadian radio broadcast. I tended to have some trouble understanding her, so I confused a number of things she said. They played at least 4 songs from the new album, which sounded as good as any of the other songs I didn't know in the set. The title song, which I thought she announced as "Mama's Summer Home" (a decidedly non-Junkies sounding title. Why, it's so sunny.) turned out to be "Miles From Home" (go figure). This was followed by a really haunting new tune called either "More Birds" or "No Birds". She also said that her shy, quiet brother Mike actually sang a song on the album, though there seemed to be no hope of getting him to say a word on stage. I was quite impressed with the show, and think it may be time to fill in that Cowboy Junkies hole in my collection. It sounded like I probably couldn't go wrong with any album, though I may wait for the new one, since I did get to see the first live performance of those songs. I was also impressed that Margot promised to come out afterwards to sign stuff and chat with anyone who wanted to hang out. She was very warm and personable. The show was definitely worth the $25 that I didn't have to pay for it. Lisa Cerbone played a nice opening set too, which seemed pretty well received by the incredibly polite audience. Most of the set was from Mercy, in a stripped down version with just Lisa on accoustic guitar and Dave on accoustic and electric guitars. Highlights were particularly strong versions of "He Took The Silence" and "Watching You Drown", and the new song, tentatively titled (by me) "Ebb and Flow" (until I know better) is starting to gel with me after a few listens. I thought there was an annoying amount of reverb in the house speakers, though I was close enough to hear the moniters most of the time. (Thanks for the ticket Lisa!)
