A very stong song that so impressed Iris' good friend Merle Haggard that he was moved to record it himself. Merle has given Iris quite a career boost in the last few years by his outward show of support for her. And John Prine is also a huge, huge fan. Neal had written: > I've got > positive comments from Mitch and Vickie, mostly directed at Infamous > Angel, and my unpleasant experience of seeing Iris in concert. I understand that Neal didn't quite feel that way himself, but I guess that's what makes the world go around, eh? Her style is _ultra traditional_, which in itself is a breath of fresh air for "country" music, imo. I'll never forget seeing Iris in Santa Cruz CA a couple three years ago, outdoors at an annual KPIG "Fat Fry" festival. Prine headlined the day's events. Iris was sooooo sweet in a long gingham(?) dress, and she just wowed the crowd. If you know anything about KPIG (diverse hippieish/country, not quite an ectoish format per se though they do play some ectoish artists), you would know what I mean when I say that she had the audience in the palm of her hand that day. Afterwards, she hung around the back of the stage, signing CDs and posters of the _My Life_ cover. I'm sure she's still as humble as she ever was. I have a great live show of hers from KPFA at the Berkeley Freight and Salvage. Iris had refused to let KPFA air it because she thought it was embarrassing and not good enough-HA! Finaly, the next time she swung through the bay area she finally relented, much to the delight of fans like me! If any other Iris fan would like to trade for a copy, let me know at alundra@flash.net. Thanks very much for the compliment. I designed and run VPK's website for her. She is one of my dearest friends. :) I will pass along your comments to her. I'm getting ready to update the website with lots of new news so check there again in about a week for the latest info. VPK is really enjoying doing the the "Lily Faeries" shows (their homespun answer to "Lilith Fair") with Lisa Cerbone and Jane Brody, and there is another round robin gig featuring all three women coming up on February 12th, 1998 at Phantasmagoria in Wheaton, Maryland at 8pm (phone: 301-949-8886). VPK and Lisa Cerbone are also doing a gig together for "Songwriter's Night" on January 26th at Iota in Arlington, VA (phone: 703-522-8340). If I get anymore new Lily Faery dates from VPK, I will post them here. She tells me their big show-stopping number is a cover of Cher's hit "Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves." ;) Here is a list of VPK non-Lily Faery solo gigs for the next month: Dec. 31st - Awful Arthur's Seafood Co./Harrisonburg, VA - 10pm (address: 30 Water St.) Jan. 10th - Blue Moon/Sperryville, VA - 8pm (phone: 540-987-3162) Jan. 16th - Wits End/Roanoke, VA - 8pm (phone: 540-387-3539) Jan. 17th - Pine Tavern/Floyd, VA - 8pm (phone: 540-745-4482) Jan. 18th - Unity Center/Roanoke, VA - 1pm (phone: 540-562-2200) Jan. 20th - Michael's Bistro/Charlottesville, VA - 10pm (phone: 804-977-3697) Jan. 23rd - Lost Dog Coffeehouse/Shepherdstown, WVA - 8pm (phone: 304-876-0871) Jan. 30th - Picker's Supply/Fredericksburg, VA - 8pm (phone: 540-371-4669) She tours the entire country almost every year and plans to tour the Western US again in the spring. If you know of a club or coffeehouse near you that you would like VPK or the Lily Faeries to play, please e-mail me at "comments@mothersea.com" with the details and I'll pass them on to her. VPK is _definitely_ Ecto-friendly. Two of her biggest influences are Kate Bush and Jane Siberry. (Rumor has it that Jane likes VPK's latest CD and might work with her in some capacity in the future.) She also cites The Beatles, Richard Thompson, Joni Mitchell, and progressive artists Yes, Jethro Tull, and Rush as influences. Her music runs from folksy to pop/rock to new age and progressive, so there's something for everyone. She's won two Wammies (Washington Area Music Awards) in the past and has just been nominated for Best New Age Vocalist for the upcoming Wammies as well. VPK has not heard Happy's music before but I'll play some for her the next time I see her. :) (I've been a Happy fan for years.) For anyone interested in purchasing VPK's latest self-produced/released CD, "This Guardian At Noon," I'm running a special discount deal at her website (http://www.mothersea.com/vpk/) right now: if you purchase her CD through the website, you get $2 off the regular price of $15. Write to me at "comments@mothersea.com" for ordering information. (I also have a few copies left of her 1st CD, "Blue Apples," that I'm willing to sell at the same discounted price. "Blue Apples" is considered to be out-of-print now, but people tell me that they do occasionally run across copies at Borders Books & Music.) One more comment: Joseph Zitt wrote: >> http://www.mothersea.com/vpk/ > > "mother sea"?! Makes me wonder who her influences are! I am quite familiar with Happy's song of the same name, but I regret to inform you that the domain name was not derived from it. What a beautiful coinkydink though. :) Any questions? Please drop me a line at, you guessed it, "comments@mothersea.com". :) Thanks! I will be performing at 8:45 on Tuesday, the 30th, and then on Dec 31st, I will go on at 10:00. Both concerts will be acoustic. (a rather long plea from a fan) I love Jane Siberry. There....I said it. I only discovered Jane Siberry this year even though she's been making records for over a decade now. I had purchased a few of her CD's but hadn't given them much of a listen......until I purchased her newest release, "Child." If you haven't heard the CD, it's an absolutely gorgeous collection of obscure winter holiday songs garnered from a couple of live performances Jane did in New York. I finally had the good fortune to see her in concert here in Cincinnati a week and a half ago and it took my breath away. Now for the point of this letter......as some of you know, Jane's record label, Sheeba, is struggling financially. And as a fan of her very creative and beautiful work, I don't want to see her disappear. So I'd like to appeal to any and all of you to buy a copy of "Child" for yourself and another one for a friend.....and after you've heard it and fallen in love like I have, pass the word along (no, this is not a chain letter -- word-of-mouth is often the best advertising, you know). I found my copy at Borders, but if you can't find it there, I'm sure they could order a copy for you (however, Sheeba's offices are closed until January 15th, so you'll have to wait awhile). Now....apologizing for the length of this post, but it's important to me....here's a portion of an article printed in Cincinnati's entertainment rag, "City Beat": <> And, yes......it was a wonderful concert! For more information, visit Jane's Sheeba Records website at www.sheeba.ca. (oh, and no....they didn't pay me to do this). ;-) *hugs and kisses* Jill :D ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Dec 1997 00:32:53 -0500 (EST) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: seeking Euroectophiles' help (fwd) Charley - I forwarded your plea to my friend Kristine, my source for all things Belgian, and this is what she had to say. Yeah, but that show trades in the entertaining Jane Brody for the completely wretched Kevin Kadish. I hope they won't let him share the stage with Lisa and Vyktoria. > She tells me their big show-stopping > number is a cover of Cher's hit "Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves." ;) Ah, well, from the other side of the stage, the big show stopper was the cover of "Delta Dawn". It's amazing that everyone in the bar found the words to that song were stuck in some readily accessible part of the brain that probably hadn't been used for 7 or 8 years. I tried it on my sister and brother-in-law, and the words popped right out of their heads too. I think everyone knows only one line of "Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves", ( a problem that Vyktoria can probably relate to, given her unique reading of "Rocket Man".)
