I was watching an episode of "Mad About You" a few nights ago, and at the end of the credits, I saw the name of Arthur Spivak. I haven't read my Tori Amos CD booklets for a while, but I *think* that Tori's manager's name is Arthur Spivak. Is that just a coincidence? The other thing I wanted to ask is if any American or Canadian ectophile would be in any way interested in some sort of music exchange-type-thingy. The reason I ask is that I live in South Africa, and a lot of the ecto artists' music is not available here (especially those who aren't yet "established"). Unfortunately, it is very expensive for me to send "money" to the USA or Canada if I want somebody to buy some music for me. To give you an example, it costs a flat fee of R114 (about US$25) just to send a foreign money-order, not including the actual money I want to send over! It makes a lot more sense to "swop" something with somebody. The problem is, I'm not sure what I have to offer... If anybody out there has any suggestions, please let me know. As a relative newbie with only around 1 year on Ecto under my belt I'd like to reassure you all that I've never felt intimidated. For those who do, could I (very gently) suggest growing slightly thicker skin? If even a delicate flower like myself feels safe around here I'm sure everyone else can as well :) We had several mentions of both "Surfacing" and Tori Amos. I'd like to comment on these, just to prove that I'm not intimidated :) Contrary to what seems the general opinion, I like "Surfacing"in fact of all her records I find it now to be the one I play most often. Why? Precisely because it is just a fairly straightforward pop record that doesn't attempt to be anything else. But I feel the songs are sound, and some arrangements and mannerisms that at times get in the way of my enjoyment of FTE are mercifully absent this time. As for Tori Amos, I'm sad to say, I'm losing her slowly. To me the success and the importance of Little Earthquakes and the singles from that time lies not in anything tangible, but in how I felt this incredible connection with what she was doing. I never had the great religious dillema, and my high-school days were not as traumatic as hers seemed to be, but listening to her songs I thought I could FEEL what she was feeling. And there were some other songs that would make me jump up, saying "yes, how did you know?!?"... If the ultimate point of art is expression then these songs were successful like few others. But with every new record that is happening less and less often. Now I can admire the energy of BfP as someone noted, or her courage for putting out less and less commercial records, but rarely do I get that feeling that I understand completely what she's on about. It's not a criticism; she's moving on, and perhaps I am as well. But yes, I miss these early days. Someone asked about reactions to her new incarnation as Tori with a band. Well, as you can probably guess I'd much prefer her to remain just Tori with a piano. But I understand that she needs to explore new teritories. I just don't know if I'll be able and willing to follow her there. - ------------------------------------------------------------------ It's coming on Christmas They're cutting down trees They're putting up reindeer And singing songs of love and peace I wish I had a river I could skate away on... There's nothing like a discussion of opinions to get everyone's opinions tangled around their ankles like a pederast's pantaloons. The consensus seems to be that we rejoice in our lack of consensus; we revel in our respective irrelevancy; and we urge the thinner skinned among us to remember that it's not _about_ you: it's about the music. If I say Vayda Hilly Sooks (which I do hypothetically: I've never heard her), her loyal fans need only adjust their estimation of _me_, and spare us all the solipsistic melodrama of receiving such spume as purposely aimed at their personal hearts. When I declare that the Nields make my throat close up and Tori Amos strains my eyerolling muscles to the very limit of their endurance and Enya make me yearn for a beating if only I can receive it in silence, I'm not even _thinking_ of their fans: I'm thinking only of the wasted brevity of my visit to this planet (and my gag reflex, so little exercised of late). I think that woj put it best when he said... [oh $(*&#(* I can't find it, now...] Well, whatever woj said about the arguments always being substantive and respectful. The point being that, (to paraquote Loyd Bensen (sp?)) "I've seen flames, and these, sir, are no flames". Usually, the most vociferous complaints are of *this* sort: This has approached such an overreaching scope as to qualify as performance art or, at least as theatre of the absurd... We're arguing (and some are getting petulant) about the nature of past arguments... Does the word "irony" mean *nothing* to y'all? Ecto is (almost literally) a family ... There are fights, arguments, people get excited and lose tempers and... heaven forbid... apologize. etc... but, there is a *pervasive* feeling of ease and mutual respect. There are "black sheep" and prodigal sons and all that, but the core hangs together. I've shared apologies with none other than Vickie Mapes, herself (though I no longer remember what we disagreed about all those years ago...) [Funny sidebar... being in its infancy as it was when this happened, the loudes complaints came from the sidelines... shouts of "hey, no arguing!"... Vickie and I exchanged private apologies and moved on with it.] [Another funny sidebar... The recent Cassini thread (don't let anyone tell you this list ain't eclectic... there is no off-topic, here)... those of us who originally disagreed were out-shouted by the kibbitzers]. I think it's a mob-mentality kinda thing, y'know? And for the record: I Like Tori's 1st... not so much so the next few.... Though I really like her version of Little Drummer Boy. Some/many performer's subsequent releases have not been as good as their debuts. People are allowed to disagree. People can agree to disagree. It's probably pointless for those involved and it's certainly boring for those who are not, to argue about disagreeing, or, at least, to do so on the list... we can always argue about stupind things through private email. Jazz is not an undisciplined music. Jerry Garcia did not "deserve" to die at his age and his life wasn't wasted. I still worry about the Cassini mission. X sucks. Y is great. Z is my opinion. Anyone not agreeing with Z is a heretic and should W. I mean, how could anyone with a Q (where Q is any sub-cortical structure) not realize that Y sucks and X is great?! Oh... I mean, I seem to have T'ed that up... Oh... and most of the people who are here are at least as reasonable as I am... if not moreso. Peace out. Best wishes for the holidays. I picked up the first album after a promising and odd concert experience when visiting Portland, and I found it quite mediocre. Even 1/3 of the band, and half of them feverish, were more exciting than the disc, which washed out and smoothed over the rhythmic intricacies and varying instruments. So I was only mildly interested in a cassette that shortly predates this new release. However, I found that to be a dramatically different beast. I could never put my finger on it to write a review. The songs didn't quite hold together enough to really grab me, but there was an edginess to it that made them an interesting listen. I can relate that a bit to the Trypnotica (more than Reliquaries). I've found most of the Projekt stuff to be sort of second rate 4ad (I'm sure they must get tired of hearing that), so I'm not sure that makes me much more interested. (I do like a few Projekt bands though.) > I also received Ingrid Karklin's Red Hand, and was very impressed with > the packaging. Maybe it has all the bass you think most other albums should have? Like woj, I was really struck by the bass on the album too. In fact, it was the first thing I noticed, as it kept slapping me around for the first 15 minutes of the album. But I like that sort of thing :) Actually, I was quite surprised how different the album sounded from the other room. Entirely different sounds carried, with much of what first struck me getting lost in the walls and space.
