Hi Folks, Sorry to take so long to post this, but I've been offline since the SF shows and now have too much waiting email to go through for me to wait to get this out. This is not a concert review but rather a message of concern that I thought you should all be aware of. I spoke to Jane after the second SF show and asked her when she thought the next part of the trilogy might be out. Her response was, "Well, I'll either be folding the company in January or releasing the CD in February or March." I was shocked, of course, and asked if it was really possible that Sheeba might shut down. She looked dejected and said she didn't want to talk about it, not in an "it's none of your business" tone but more like "this is too depressing for me to think about." She then perked up a bit and gave a more firm answer of March for the release date. Obviously, any help you can give by buying CD's at the shows or directly from Sheeba will help her immensely, and Xmas time is a perfect excuse to shell out some extra money for a good cause (and don't forget that Patron of the Arts program at the Sheeba site). Jane did specify at all three Bay Area shows that buying from her is much better than buying from stores as she gets a larger cut. I also asked if she could elaborate on the deal Warner Bros. finally made with her. She said they wanted permission to use any three of her new songs on a greatest hits CD without actually owning the rights to those songs. She felt this was OK since they wouldn't own anything and so the deal went through. It didn't sound like there was a greatest hits CD in the works. They're just planning for the future cash flow, most likely waiting to see if Sheeba does well. So, that's the latest Jane gossip. Sorry to bring potentially bad news, but there are still a few more concerts at which you can buy merchandise, and as you know the mail order lines are always open. Happy holidays! What's that about an artist having their lifetime to write their first album and 1-2 years to get the second one ready? _vast halos_ has some nice cuts but overall it isn't as strong as the first one. > And 4 Roy Harper > discs. I was so confused with the plethora of Roy Harper stuff that I > couldn't figure out what to buy. Ah, the memories you stirred in me by just mentioning his name. (Hold on while I locate a couple of photos...) I saw Roy do a show in London on the night after the first Kate Bush Kon (praying for a surprise KT appearance but naaahh). C'& V' would have gone to the show too, but their departure was for earlier that day. He played many, many songs for at least three hours it seemed, without much of a breather, boy it was very im- pressive, and I left that show quite the new fan. Interesting was the bit around the middle of the show when he requested that the people who were smoking pot up in the front of this sit-down show to toss him a number! For the next three or four songs he'd take a couple drags off the joint then throw it to the floor. I remember that night, around the entrance to the bathrooms (the loo?), also learning that the Brits roll their pot mixed with tobacco. I've always wondered why that was. I'm not even sure if its still happening or not, but when I called in November, Sheeba basically said don't bother ordering until you've tried to get a CD at the show since Sheeba didn't know when they'd be able to ship merchandise to their customers. If Sheeba is running fairly tight, not being able to sell merchandise for several months could be a major problem. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Dec 1997 13:37:39 -0500 (EST) From: Michael Colford Subject: Re: Jane in Trouble? I realize this may not be ecto-ish, but.... Anybody out there care to offer some suggestions for gospel groups? I'm sitting here on a cold, gray, windy, and wet Seattle afternoon listening to the Swan Silvertones and thinking, "This is pretty darn nice." (I picked up the album after reading a poem by Billy Collins, "Sunday Morning with the Sensational Nightingales" that also mentions "The Soulstirrers," the "Dixie Hummingbirds," and "Five Mississippi Blind Boys." I'll certainly try some of these groups, but the bin at the local large CD store was bewilderingly large.) - - Ron Starr (rstarr@eskimo.com) - ------------------------------------------------------------- The world won't end in darkness, it'll end in family fun, with Coca Cola clouds behind a Big Mac Sun. -- Beautiful South ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Dec 1997 18:20:10 -0600 (CST) From: "Mitchell A. When I posted about my impending trip to Chicago recently, I never imagined that I would hear from the first lady, herself--Vickie Mapes. Being a former Kansas Citian herownself, she thought it might be fun to get together and swap stories. Now, I have been accused of being slow a time or two in my life, but after the glowing remarks about her in recent ecto-posts, I didn't hesitate to accept her invitation. She and Chris met me at this little diner tucked around the corner from my hotel. Let me just say that these are two of the nicest people I have ever had the opportunity to spend time with. I think we sat in that diner for probably three hours talking about our personal histories and, of course, all things ecto. Vickie brought me some wonderful ecto-gifts, and the two of them actually taught me html on a piece of scrap paper so I could get to work on my own webpage (and yes, Chris, I am looking for a *real* ISP...:) I have to say, even though my trip to Chicago (my first) was filled with activities and social events planned by my boss, those three hours with Vickie and Chris were the best. And on a related note... At some point, I expressed my hesitancy to post to this list for fear that my posts might not...ummm...make the grade (I'm putting this as politely as I know how). Vickie very warmly suggested that there are many folks out there lurking who are interested in what *everyone* has to say. In a very timely post, Kenn showed great courage by stating (excerpted): <> Just the day before Kenn's post I received and off-list missive from an ecto- lurker (a friend of mine from the KaTe side) who confessed that she felt too intimidated to post because of this same issue. I can't say it any more politely or diplomatically than Kenn, so I won't. I just wanted to add to the voice. Thanks for listening. And if you ever get the chance to meet Vickie and Chris, don't pass it up! Cheers and good wishes to all...Java n.p. JavaMix '97, compiled by RKonrad. According to Billboard, the singer will be launching a benefit project which will see Amos' 14 video catalogue available for viewing to fans paying a minimum one-time donation of $5 to the network. The donation will give fans access to the clips for a four-week period starting December 18. Among the offerings are a rare clip for her song "Cornflake Girl," a video never before available in the U.S. The campaign is being dubbed "Onstage With RealAid," and is being hosted by her label, Atlantic at www.atlantic-records.com, and Seattle's RealNetworks, www.real.com. The project also marks the debut of the RealSystem 5.0 Commerce Solution designed for seamless and secure on-demand live online events. Users must register and receive a non-transferable password specific to each computer user. The content cannot be downloaded, thus fans won't be able to store the videos on their harddrives for repeated viewing or copying. My opinion of Puffy is that he is > to rap what Mariah Carey is to pop (and yes, I mean that as an insult). Oh, I have heard that. And contrary to Kenn's warnings, I'm perfectly happy to say I found it wholeheartedly wretched. I don't have a problem with sampling or remakes, but this just seemed really unimaginative. And if you've ever seen any killer turntable players, you couldn't deny the skill in what they were doing. I saw a largely uninteresting set by PM Dawn at WOMAD some years ago, and I was in total awe of the control and capabilities of the DJ. It's usually not that clear to me what is DJ's are up to, but he had an extended solo that put him front and center that blew me away. And recently taking sampling to realms virtually unimaginable was Kaffie Matthews, a London violin player I saw a few weeks ago. She started with the overdubbing tricks that have been discussed here about Caryn Lin, and went from there, creating dense, powerful and totally improvised music. She'd play violin for 5 to 10 minutes, capturing and layering the sounds. Then she'd put the violin down and play the mixing board (or whatever, I'm electronics ignorant) for the next 20 minutes, taking sounds she'd just recorded, and stretching, twisting and breaking them apart until they bore almost no discernable resemblance to what she originally played. But all the while, she kept the music going, exploring the new terrain of sounds at her fingertips. She repeated the process about 3 times in the course of the hour long piece. And, for a very ecto-friendly example of brilliant sampling, get ahold of any recent Cindy Lee Berryhill bootleg. She has a song built around a skipping Beach Boys record called "She Won't Even Try" that should counter anyones arguments that sampling is not music. If I'm mistaken in that assumption, I'd like to point out that during the last round of topic-versus-off-topic arguments, it was the older ectophiles defending Ecto as a forum for the unregulated discussion of any type of music against a few newer 'philes who insisted thay we reign in the non-Happy talk. No one should feel intimidated to post. If a lively discussion results--one that bounces back and forth between pro and con and like and dislike--you should consider yourself warmly included in the Ecto "community", not excluded: humans disagree, especially when it comes to artistic opinions. It's unfortunate that some people label enthusiasm in discussing a subject someone feels strongly about--whether for or against--as a personal attack.
