Websearching for them has led me to their "Introductory > Mechanics Guide To Putting Out Records, Cassettes, And CDs" at > http://www.wam.umd.edu/~ahacop/Guide/guide.html > I will devour it in detail! That's a really good resource, it helped a lot when I was starting my label. Although I still don't really know what the heck I am doing! :) agh. You also should check out http://www.afim.org/ -- i think that stands for the association for independent music. it costs some outrageous amount to join, but you can still look up member addresses there (other labels, all important DISTRIBUTORS, etc. etc) and those can be very helpful. I'm not sure any of the distributors *I* use are listed there (Carrot Top, Parasol, Cargo, Darla, etc), but a lot of the 'established' ones that can get you into places like those online CD stores are. I still haven't managed to accomplish that, though. sigh. It's still only the hip independent stores for me... Mailing lists... there's something called like the Indie-list (?) which a bunch of musicians and stuff are on, but i've never subscribed. I am on the indie-pop list though, which is basically a music-discussion list where label-running questions are asked on occasion, but the more common threads are like 'was michael hutchence death really by autoerotic asphyxiation?' Various pricing things of interest... Think about barcoding your CDs. To become a member of the uniform code council thing costs $300 for small companies, and that gets you an allotment of like 10000 numbers to use. :) fun. :) A lot of stores won't stock CDs without barcodes, which is retarded beyond belief. [As are most things in the slimy music business--retarded!) On the other hand, there are a few people on the planet that won't buy CDs *with* barcodes. CD-Rs.... manufacuturing plants will charge you like $100 to make one from a DAT. It costs so much, apparently, because they dislike doing it, not because they do a better job. I get mine done at DiamonDisc for $25 to $50... Friends with dat machines and cd-rom burners can do it for less. :) If you ever wanna release vinyl, and your source material is analog, it's probably gonna sound better if you stick with tape (a "1630"). I've always gone DAT though, even with my 7"s. Anyways, a CD-R is basically your 'test pressing' which CD plants then make a glass master from, which is then what is used to press the CDs or something like that. I don't know the details exactly. :) Raw CDs w/ 2 pantone color printing will cost you anywhere from 60c to 90c a piece, for 1000... And if you can find someone that will do less than 1000 it would be $1 or more probably. I don't know if there's a particular quality difference between Cd pressing plants (There are with vinyl plants). A lot of people use Media Group (the 60c people) and I think I might start too. Great price! The big worry of course is: will they play right without skipping? Jewelcases seem to be 25c from most plants, or a bit more if you want a wild color... Printing of 1000 booklets/traycards runs $300 and up provided you provide the film... and the film work from quark or pagemaker is gonna be like $100 to $300, on up, depending on how elaborate the booklet is, if you want the peace of mind of seeing a color proof, etc. what else... of course if you're a songwriter, join ASCAP or BMI and register your songs!!! BMI is free. If you're gonna release any cover songs, there's a bunch of paperwork you gotta do with someone, but I haven't had to tackle that issue yet. The Passion site hasn't been updated yet with samples from Red Hand, but there are samples from _Anima Mundi_ at http://www.hear.com/passion/round.html Ingrid's first two albums (_A Darker Passion_ and _Anima Mundi_) came out from Green Linnet, so they're pretty readily available in the U.S. I first heard about her back when _A Darker Passion_, her first album came out. A friend read a review of it in _Option_ and bought the disc and played it for us. We loved it, and bought the disc right away. Later I noticed her name coming up regularly in ecto. When Ingrid started up her own mailing list, passion, which a lot of us from ecto joined: Neal Copperman, Meth, woj, Chris Sampson, and a number of other familiar names are all there, which is where we heard all along about the process of Ingrid making _Red Hand_. The list is about passion of all kinds, but focuses on Ingrid and her music. There's info about it on the site above. CBC just showed a Lilith Fair show yesterday. Most of it was taped at the Toronto shows. It was pretty good, they showed a couple of songs from Sarah's set, one each from Jewel's, Shawn Colvin's, and Meredith Brooks, they added a Sheryl Crow song from a different LF, plus they showed the two songs by the Indigo Girls where they invited guests on the stage! "The Water is Wide" featured Jewel and Sarah, and the harmonies are absolutely breathtaking, they send shivers up and down my spine every time. "Closer to Fine" featured Sarah, Jewel, and (ugh) Meredith Brooks. It was really cool to see a show I'd been at on national television. When Jewel came on to do her set she mentioned how she's played at C'est What every Sunday, and you could just hear (barely) my friend Sheldon yell out "MONDAYS" (although you can't make it out). I went to see Arlene Bishop play last night and she was terrific. She improvised several songs, one that went for a good 20 minutes and was really funny. Tonight I'm off to see Sarah Slean. I was supposed to meet a friend at the Second Story in Bloomington last night to see the Nields perform. Since I didn't get away from work till about 4:30 and had a 3-hour drive to get there, I expected to miss the opening band and dinner as well. I did grab a sandwich just before I arrived in town, but I hurried to the venue in case they were running ahead of schedule. I came in about 8:20, and the first act was already onstage. They were a local a capella female quartet. Pretty good, though I think they had trouble hearing themselves (no stage monitors!) and got out of sync a couple of times. They played from whenever they started (probably a little after 8) till maybe 9:00. Sorry to say, I didn't catch the name of the group, but they were very good and won the small audience over quite effectively. The Nields didn't waste too much time; they started before 9:20. Not having seen them live before, I actually encountered some of the band in the audience hanging out before their show -- but didn't know their names. Daves C. and H. were wandering around, and Katryna came out to say hi to one of their regular fans before returning backstage. The Nields took the stage very quickly and started playing with little ado... they played a fine set. I counted only 43 people in the audience, but they were well-behaved. 10 people got up to dance about halfway through the set, and stayed there to the end. I enjoyed their performance, though I think the small crowd was a slight inhibiting factor. Not a lot of wild gyrations from Katryna (who I gather is usually pretty active), though the band did a unison pogo on a couple of tunes. I snagged a set list from the floor at K's feet afterwards, so I can list with confidence what they played. There were probably 6 new songs in the mix, a couple of which were really good ("Jennifer Falling Down" springs to mind). I'm glad I went; as a first experience it was a lot of fun, and talking to Daves C. and N. after the show revealed that they're nice laid-back people who love to play music. (I had to ask DC about his cool 5-string bass, since my daughter is a bass player) I just wish there had been a larger crowd, though Katryna did say they planned to come back soon -- so they couldn't have been too upset with the response... - -- | Greg Dunn | this is slowly taking me apart. | | gregdunn@indy.net | grey would be the color if i | | GregDunn@aol.com | had a heart. | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn | Trent Reznor | ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Dec 1997 01:09:16 -0500 (EST) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: News from Ingrid Karklins & Backbone > At 5:26 PM -0500 12/6/97, Paul Blair wrote: > >I've been interested in the recent postings re Ingrid Karklins-given the > >very limited distribution of her new album, I'm wondering how people found > >out about her, and if there's somewhere I could find something to listen to > >so I can find out what she's like before I invest in Red Hand? I don't remember where I first heard her. I think I made a copy of Anima Mundi from Jeff Hanson, and of course saw her name bandied about around here. I wasn't wow'ed by AM, though I thought about half of it was really great, particularly the instrumental and Latvian stuff. Not sure which. Either way, she sent a message to the list explaining what she was interested in and trying to do with Passion, her list. Despite my mixed feelings about Anima Mundi, I was impressed with the invite, and intrigued with what I might find. So I joined immediately. Not only haven't I been sorry, but it inspired me to give more carefull listens to AM and to buy A Darker Passion, which both gradually grew on me so that I can't remember what didn't work for me at first. Perhaps my ears have been trained by now, but I had no problems instantly being wild about the vast majority of The Red Hand. > which is where we heard all along > about the process of Ingrid making _Red Hand_. This is a pretty important point. Passion runs in spurts. Often weeks go by with no traffic, and then someone will mention something that gets things moving a bit. There really don't tend to be a lot of long threads, instead the occasional thoughts and observations. What's interesting is that Ingrid responds to virtually every message (eventually), and she has kept us appraised at each step of the process of making Red Hand. She's posted lyrical snippets as they've come to her, discussed experiences that have inspired her to write various songs, and answered questions about specific instrumentation, samples and techniques. Thus, when Red Hand finally came out (it's release was partially funded by donations from the list too), it seemed like we had all been a part of the record. Everything had more weight and meaning given our personal involvements. Of course, the fact that it's a great album in an amazing package certainly didn't hurt matters any. I'd be surprised if everyone liked Ingrid's music, but I wouldn't feel bad recommending it to anyone anyway, just because it is so heartfelt and alive, and it merits support even if it doesn't work for you :) Her sound is pretty unique - a touch of world music, some atmospeheric Peter Gabriel-type sounds, some almost folky, touching piano numbers, vocal layering, and amazing thrumming and frolicing drum 'n' bass.
