I read rec.music.gaffa and Happy's name kept coming up in Vickie's posts. I got _Warpaint_ on spec based on Vickie's enthusiasm 'round about January of 1992, and an ectophile was born. Happy's voice and songwriting blew me away. I know I've said this before, but I knew from the instant "Phobos" started to play (the machine we first played it on was at a friend's and we'd all bought a bunch of stuff and set it at random play) that I was going to _love_ the disc and Happy. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Dec 1997 15:32:52 -0600 From: JEFFREY_HANSON@NSDGATE3.nsd.fmc.com (JEFFREY HANSON) Subject: Jewel's Acting (was Re[2]: Veda Hille news and sTuff) - --IMA.Boundary.866753188 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Description: cc:Mail note part >>?!? But hey. >Yup. She's doing a movie. She did take a lot of acting classes at >Interlochen when she was a student there. She's playing the lead in the new Ang Lee film, a Civil War drama, primarily about two brothers. She'll be playing the female romantic lead, a fairly small role, opposite Matt Damon (originally it was going to be Leonardo diCaprio). I'll admit she wasn't a stunning actress in the TNT Wizard of Oz, but I thought she did a pretty good job, especially since she was the only actor who had her lines memorized, and also given the fact that they had less than a week (more like 2-3 days) to rehearse. I thought it was uncanny how she mimiced Judy Garland's voice throughout the show. The overall production was pretty lame, but I thought she held her own--especially among the other musicians who participated (even Daltry who has considerable stage/acting experience). Apparently she's been courted by several movie studios and has met with both Spielberg and Woody Allen to discuss possible roles. I'm a little skeptical myself about musicians going into acting, but having seen her intensity and facial expressions while she sings live, I know she can be very emotive and convincing. Now whether she can do that without singing at the same time, we'll have to see. I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt though. I think the girl could do pretty much anything she set her mind to. I never thought she'd be as hugely successful as she's become--but never because I thought she didn't have the talent or charisma. I just never thought the public (who made huge hits out of the Macarena and the Spice Girls) had enough taste to appreciate her. It's getting tougher to admit being a fan though, since it means I have to admit sharing similar musical tastes with tons of junior high school girls/teenyboppers throughout the country/world. In fact, I asked my Mom to get me the recently released piano book for Pieces of You for Christmas, and she's had a terrible time findingd any tores that have been able to keep it in stock. Scary. Jeff Hanson (I do wish Atlantic would get on the ball and release more of her music though! The problems of major labels are that they do milk albums for all that they're worth. I wish Jewel could be like Ani and release an album a year). - --IMA.Boundary.866753188 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; name="RFC822 message headers" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Description: cc:Mail note part Content-Disposition: inline; filename="RFC822 message headers" Received: from nsd.fmc.com (128.254.72.21) by NSDGATE3.NSD.FMC.COM with SMTP (IMA Internet Exchange 2.1 (Gold Candidate) Enterprise) id 0001FA96; Fri, 5 Dec 97 14:11:57 -0600 Received: from igw.fmc.com by nsd.fmc.com (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id OAA20395; Fri, 5 Dec 1997 14:08:07 -0600 Received: from relay1.shore.net by igw.fmc.com with SMTP id AA07167 (InterLock SMTP Gateway 3.0 for ); Fri, 5 Dec 1997 14:08:02 -0600 Received: from jane.smoe.org (majordom@smoe.org [204.167.97.154]) by relay1.shore.net (8.8.7/8.8.7) with SMTP id PAA17668; Fri, 5 Dec 1997 15:07:38 -0500 (EST) Received: from localhost by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-listq-jane) id PAA25090; Fri, 5 Dec 1997 15:06:21 -0500 Received: by jane.smoe.org (bulk_mailer v1.5); Fri, 5 Dec 1997 15:06:10 -0500 Received: by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-listq-jane) id PAA25071; Fri, 5 Dec 1997 15:00:17 -0500 Received: from dns.greyware.com (dns.greyware.com [207.55.146.21]) by jane.smoe.org (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4-daemon-mode-relay2) with ESMTP id PAA25067 for ; Fri, 5 Dec 1997 15:00:09 -0500 Received: from circle.greyware.com (circle.greyware.com [207.55.146.50]) by dns.greyware.com (8.8.3/8.8.3) with SMTP id NAA11332 for ; Fri, 5 Dec 1997 13:58:35 -0600 Received: from [128.95.168.195] (unverified [128.95.168.195]) by circle.greyware.com (EMWAC SMTPRS 0.83) with SMTP id ; Fri, 05 Dec 1997 13:56:24 -0600 X-Sender: neile@pop.sff.net Message-Id: In-Reply-To: <3.0.3.16.19971204220819.41ef35be@mail.smoe.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Date: Fri, 5 Dec 1997 11:56:20 -0700 To: ecto@smoe.org From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: Veda Hille news and sTuff Sender: owner-ecto@smoe.org Precedence: bulk - --IMA.Boundary.866753188-- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Dec 1997 14:31:17 -0800 (PST) From: Michael Bowman Subject: Re: Veda Hille news and sTuff On Thu, 4 Dec 1997, meredith wrote: > Aha!
