[faucet@pipeline.com] Re: _Through the Bitter Frost and Snow_ [Carolyn Andre Subject: Lisa Loeb's "firecracker" Picked up Lisa Loeb's "Firecracker" the other day, and it's pretty darn good, and has one of the best album covers in recent memory (a beautiful retro paining of Loeb). It has some really fine tracks, "Falling in Love" is probably the best; it's stone cold beautiful, both lyrically and musically ("the time between meeting and finally leaving is sometimes called falling in love."). Other standouts include the poppy "I Do", the resonant "Jake", the Juliana Hatfield-ish "Split Second", the Twister-sndrk appearing "How", and "This". On the other hand, I miss some of the standout, in your face guitar work of "Tails". Only on "Split Second" and perhaps "I Do" does she rock out at all, and only the former matches the intensity of "Alone", "Taffy", and "Snow Day". Still, a worthy effort... highly recommended. Also picked up BB King's "Deuces Wild". Notable on ecto only for a standout duet between King and Tracy Chapman on "The Thrill is Gone". It's excellent. - -- Mark A. Hi you all ... Hmmm, wonder why this did take so long time to arrive to the list, when AG did get it right away ... The thought that there might be a future European tour as well sounds very nice indeed :) I got to give the right channels a hint about the possibility it seems :) Anyway, the plans for a 2nd Ecto gathering here in Norway are still there. So for those who are living outside Europe - you got some time to get the money together. Same time, same place in 1999 (not next year that is). Well, good luck to you > whichever way you go.. you're guitar has always been one of the > fantastic parts of Happy's songs. And we love your input to the list. Amen. I took another look at the production and other credits on Happy's CDs and was reminded of just how much Kevin has contributed to her music- Not only the distinctive guitar work, but the co-production, the recording prowess, the liner notes, (hey Kevin, you ever think of being a contributing editor for The Onion? http://www.theonion.com/) and my personal favorite: the digital seagull on "Mother Sea." I also checked my personal RAM (interleaved and becoming more so with each passing year) and retrieved images of him hiding at the back of the Tin Angel stage, working subtle miracles with that that foot-powered gizmo... Whatever, I truly hope that Happy's artistic control over her future work with Samson means Kevin will continue to be a big factor. BTW, KB- any chance that Bob Ludwig will be doing the mastering? Happy in Omaha ? Well I suppose if there's a venue that fits the master plan...she'll probably perform there, but that's probably a booking agent (not record company) issue. I'm sure Rhodes is going to want to do a complete national thing, so she'll probably hit all the time zones and then some. I would imagine that most Happy Rhodes info, from this point on, will be coming from Samson Music, but I strongly suggest you get the real dirt and current blurbs from the lovely and talented Sharon Nichols. She'll have all the news that's fit to be tied. I think there may be something in the future where Samson connects with Terra Incognita. I dunno. I've heard things. So again thanks, and perhaps I'll see ya in NYC on thurs. I'll be the guy NOT carrying equipment. KB ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Nov 1997 10:53:49 -0800 (PST) From: "J. Wow. Seven years ago, I couldn't imagine being able to buy Happy Rhodes' music on CD, nor conceive of being able to pop into the majority of local music stores and pick up her music on a whim... There was something magical about that first batch of tapes I got from Aural Gratification, along with Kevin's handwritten apology for their tardiness, explaining that the flu had slowed them down a bit. Now we find out that Happy has what sounds like an almost KaTe-like deal...5 albums with 100% artistic control. I know Happy wouldn't have wanted it any other way, but it was hard to imagine she'd ever get signed to a label that would grant her such control. What fabulous news to hear that it has in fact happened! Not to mention the prospect of not having to drive 5 hours to see her in concert (not that I'm moaning, mind you...I'm grateful that I've gotten to see her so many times!) Congratulations, of course, to Happy and to Kevin as well! jeff ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Nov 1997 23:21:27 -0500 From: Paul Blair Subject: Re: Here goes.......... meth wrote: >First off, CONGRATULATIONS HAPPY!!!
