She is great!!!Check out: http://www.songs.com/dee/index.html I prefer the "Regarding the soul" album. Very melodic acoustic and great lyrics. A mix between Loreena McKennitt and Joni Mitchell. You can find the "Beloved one" album on http://www.cdnow.com This album is more fusion-pop/jazz-ish and a more traditional production. BTW: She is married/or live together with Mike Mainieri, the jazz vibe-player, composer, bandleader (Steps Ahead) and producer (Dire Straits). :-) Sincerely, Erik Bjorgum __________________________________________ D E S I G N P A R T N E R A S Kilgaten 33, 3217 Sandefjord. Somone here once described her as a "cross between Joni Mitchell and Loreena McKennitt" which sounds mighty good to me... I haven't heard her myself but you might want to try the following website- http://home.hkstar.com/~ericnet/moncoeur/deecar.html Richard ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Nov 1997 08:31:05 +0000 From: Silme@ix.netcom.com Subject: Re: Dee Carstensen Erik Bj=F8rgum wrote: >=20 > mbittner@juno.com wrote: >=20 > > I think I remember somebody talking about Dee Carstensen, but can't > > remember who or why.=20 It probably was me. Also try her live album, Home Away from Home. It really captures her true flavour. And the new album, The Map, is quite nice. I prefer Regarding the Soul to Beloved One. >=20 > BTW: She is married/or live together with Mike Mainieri, the jazz > vibe-player, composer, bandleader (Steps Ahead) and producer (Dire Stra= its). They're married. She talks about how they met, etc. in concert. If I remember correctly, there's an article about her in the most recent Dirty Linen. Kelley (I spelt it correctly that time :) may beat me to this, since I get the digest, but it's named "Hear's" Music in Tucson. Not to be nitpicky or anything... :) > By big, I don't mean the physical > size of the store, but how many of them are there? I know of two > in the Bay Area - one's in Palo Alto, and there's another in > Berkeley. I agree, it is a great store. I lived in San Jose from '78 to '96 and have frequented the PA store (small world, isn't it). There's just one in Tucson. Tucson's not that big of a city compared to the Phoenix metro concreteplex. (One of the reasons I love it here). I don't think there is a Hear's in the Phoenix area (they have Towers up there). > And it is a real ecto source. Folk, interesting rock, singer- > songwriters galore, and (at least in Palo Alto - I haven't been > to the Berkeley store) an entire room devoted to jazz. Not only that, our Hear's also sponsors performers here. They sponsored Dar's show here about a month ago, which I had to miss BTW :( ... They sponsored a really cool *entire weekend* guitar playing workshop/performance by Rosie Flores ("smokin' down that blue highway") outdoors downtown last year that was really a fun time. Vicki Pratt-Keating also appeared here too. The Hear's ad for that show caused me to buy Vicki's album since they described her as a cross between Nanci Griffith and Kate Bush. Sorry, but VP-K ain't no Kate-I chose not to attend that show. (I can really digress, can't I? :) Someone (you?) had mentioned Hear's (or Hear?) Music in the Bay Area a month or so ago on ecto. After reading that, I got curious and actually called our Hear's and asked them if they were affiliated with the Bay Area stores. They are not, I was told. I should have asked if they ever were, because our Hear's also has a lot of jazz, and classical, and it's just too much like the PA store to think that there isn't or hasn't been some kind of connection. Larry (anything but work) H. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Nov 1997 18:24:08 -0500 From: "Kenn" Subject: Ecto-Ilk Chanteuses On Upcoming Soundtrack Thought I'd pass along this information.... The soundtrack for the upcoming film _Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil_ features covers of old Johnny Mercer standards performed by the likes of k.d. lang, Cassandra Wilson, Allison Krauss and Paula Cole. The soundtrack will be available on November 18th. I'm afraid I have no idea what particular Mercer songs are covered by the first three artists I've mentioned, however, Paula Cole will be covering "Autumn Leaves." I heard the song over the telephone yesterday (a source of mine had an advance copy of the disc) and Paula's rendition is simple and beautifully sentimental. She's accompanied by bass, guitar, accordian and drums and the song clearly showcases Paula's jazz background. Perhaps those few Ectophiles who (as recently seen) are of the opinion that Paula has become pretentious and that her talents have faded since the release of Harbinger will see the release of this soundtrack as an opportunity to hear Paula dip back into her jazz background and, hopefully, see that writing her off as a self-absorbed bore is shortsighted. My opinion is that what has been deemed by some as pretentiousness is actually showmanship. That's not to say that one isn't entitled to one's own opinion. If you don't like Paula, you don't like her. I certainly have similar feelings about other artists (i.e. Beth Orton and Tori Amos). But, I feel that Paula is a pretty amazing musician and songwriter. My hope is that those who are terribly impressed with her might give her another listen and look. This soundtrack is an opportunity to do just that and get some new stuff from other artists to boot. Other artists who have lended their vocal talents to the CD are Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Kevin Spacey, Clint Eastwood, Allison Eastwood, Kevin Mahogany and Tony Bennett. Peace. I am dying to hear more from this >group/person called "Scarlet" Does anyone know of a group, or perhaps >another name that "Scarlet" is going by? > >TIA! Scarlet have made two albums. The first, _Naked_ has the track "Independent Love Song", dates from 1995, and was mildly successful in this country (the UK). The second album is _Chemistry_ (1996), which bombed, possibly because they chose the worst track on the album (the title track) as the single. Despite that one track, I rather like the album. I haven't heard anything from them since. Scarlet are/were Cheryl Parker (vocals) and Joe Youle (who is female, despite the name) (piano & keyboards). I guess Scarlet are borderline between ecto and pop, sounding a bit like Alisha's Attic crossed with Alanis Morisette. What drags them above typical girl-pop are the lyrics, many of which are of the "life sucks, relationships suck" variety, but without the angry attitude of Alanis. Having said that, there are a few more positive tracks to avoid the albums getting too depressing. Simon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Nov 1997 18:45:28 -0700 From: "Larry J. Hernandez" Subject: Donnette Thayer (I can't believe this!) 'philes, Now here's something that doesn't happen every day: I just got home from work, and checked the mailbox. There was a package with a CD in it. Funny, I didn't order any CD? The return address gave it away: DT/EM, P.O. box 1354, Hollywood CA. 90028. This was from Donnette! Free! Here's the story: When I rejoined ecto a few months back, I noted how much Donnette and her old band Hex meant to me. Good ol' Sue Trowbridge wrote me back, let me know that Donnette had recently released a solo album, and gave me this address and a phone no. that she (Sue) had gotten from a friend who had the CD. I called the number-it was disconnected. Oh well, might as well send a SASE to the p.o. box anyway requesting info, price, etc., plus I noted how much I'd love to get this CD, how much I loved Hex, etc. Weeks and weeks go by, no reply. I had just about given up and was going to try some other means. The CD is called _Chaos and Wonder_, the label/matrix no. is "Escapist Music 0124960004," whatever that means. :) Donnette included a ~handwritten~ note saying: Hi Larry! Thanks for your letter, yes the phone is disconnected-it's a zen thing-you know, attachment and loss. You win a CD for your troubles-with my compliments! Enjoy! - d But that's not all: check this out-she also included a sheet of paper that looks like your typical "certificate." Imagine each of the following lines being centered on the certificate: Internet Sleuth --------> (in big letters on top) awarded to Larry Hernandez For finding an address, writing to it, and generally hanging in there for the love of great music. presented by CyberDonut Cookie Company November 2, 1997 (signed) D Thayer ----------------- Donnette R. Thayer Now this was just toooo cool... Of course I'm listening to the CD for the first time as I type-it is very Hex-like. I'll write more about it after a few listens. Great cover-Donnette looks wonderful.
