Stewart" Subject: Mary Lydia Ryan Hi, I sent away to the "free CD offer" that was advertised on the web site given at the bottom of this message. Since I was the first person from South Africa to make a request, I was sent a free copy of the CD, on condition that I post a review of the CD on my favourite music newsgroup, so I naturally posted it to the "ecto" list. For those non-ectophiles who might read the review, some of my favourite artists and groups Jewel, Sarah McLachlan, Happy Rhodes, Loreena McKennit, Talking Heads, U2, The Cure, and, my most supremely favouritist favourite artist, Tori Amos. I am not a professional reviewer, so the following are just my humble opinions and impressions of Mary Lydia Ryan... The first thing that struck me about Mary Lydia Ryan was her voice. I wouldn't say she sounds like anybody in particular, but she did sometimes, for very brief moments, remind me of Tori Amos, Jewel, and the lead singer for 10000 maniacs (whose name eludes me right now!). She has the kind of voice that takes me to a very beautiful place, and once I'm there, helps me explore the feelings she is sharing in her songs. (Does that make any sense?) The music is provided mainly by MLR's piano playing, which is a very effective accompaniment for her voice. The opening track, Farewell Ophelia, had some particularly moving piano work. I must admit that, initially, I found the CD a bit musically repetitive. But as I listened to it more and more, I became more aware of the differences than the similarities. The lyrics, written mostly by MLR herself, were sometimes simple, but not simplistic. (I found this quite refreshing after CD's like Tori's "Boys for Pele", which I have become emotionally attached to, but the lyrics of which I must confess I don't always understand...) I found the lyrics very touching - they appear to tell stories about experiences that are very real to the artist. A quote on the CD sleeve says "You will gain more from emotional surrender to your music than through technical expertise" In my opinion, she has no shortage of either. I would recommend her music to anyone who is looking for a "quieter" ecto artist. She certainly has a new fan in me and I will definitely be ordering her next CD... Review by Robert I. I ordered two copies in early October. The charge was made to my account on the 5th, but I still haven't received the CDs. I know the original release date was slipped from the 12th to the 20th, but still haven't seen anything. Has anybody received this yet? Or has the date slipped again? I sent a mail message to sheeba but haven't heard anything back yet. (In other words, Irvin, you may be wise to be reluctant to mail order. I do believe Child will eventually be available in stores --it was just being pre-sold through Sheeba. A Day in the Life was never meant to be available widely though.) She's doing 2 shows in NYC on 11/8 and 11/22 at the Eighty Eights (228 West 10th Street). The show starts at 6PM, and the cover charge is $12. I saw Kat about 2 years ago, and was pretty impressed. She does a credible job of covering Kate, and hey, lets face it, we're not likely to see Kate performing her own stuff live anytime this century (or next!). - -jeff (who will not hold his breath until the next Kate CD) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Nov 1997 00:32:28 -0800 From: sspan Subject: 10,000 Maniacs webcast Here's a reprint of a notice from the 10KM list for anyone interested.
