You lucky thing, getting to see the Mollys in The Old Pueblo. I saw them there in the Spring, and they were just wonderful. I saw them here in Flagstaff once, and left with an asthma attack after only 2 hours (they not only play well, they always play LONG!). The only bar they seem to favor up here is completely unventilated--a deadly place if more than a few smokers show up (add in the 7000 ft. altitude, and it's a wonder they can sing at all). Well, I've raved about the Mollys on ecto before, so I'll shut up after adding that they don't tour THAT often, so see them if you get the chance--there is nothing else like them for sustained high energy in a wide variety of genres that they are able to handle in a way that's completely their own. cheers, Kelley ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 1997 10:19:56 -0700 (MST) From: Kelley Hays-Gilpin Subject: Paula Cole So, I left my graduate student assistant to give my mid-term exams and headed off to Tucson for a few days (this was a few weeks ago. I have now emerged out from under the pile of graded exams) for musical and other adventures (dentist. acupuncture. argh). 1) The Mollys weren't playing, but I caught a wonderful group called Ulali, three Native American women who drum and sing. They use some traditional rhythms and vocal techniques, but the compositions are new and original--dare one say ecto in some way that's as usual hard to pin down. 2) Hung out under the headphones at Hear's Music and ended up with something I had never heard of--"A Prayer for the Soul of Layla," by Jamshied Sharifi, with vocals by Paula Cole. Could this be the same Paula Cole of "This Fire" (which I like a lot, but am not altogether blow away by. I haven't come across Harbinger yet)? Sounds like it, but I'm not sure. This is very middle eastern in flavor, but again new, world-music-ish, tho' taking on traditional themes. I know nothing about this artist (Sharifi) but I love this CD! 3) on arrival home, Project LO's Black Canvas in the mail! Can't get enough of Happy's "Mercy Street" and I love the rest of it, too. cheers, Kelley ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 1997 12:46:25 -0500 (EST) From: faucet@pipeline.com Subject: Radio Thriftshop at the Museum of TV & Radio Folks, Here is some info for you to be aware of.... I saw Ulali a number of years ago at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. The focus that year was on Native Americans as well as other stuff I'm vague on now (Old Believer Russians, I think). Ulali was the definite standout in the Native American tent, and have since been back playing at the Kennedy Center and Wolftrap. I haven't seen them again, but have been curious what they were up to. Do they have their own album out yet? (Years ago they had a tape which they were sold out of. They took down my address, but never sent me anything.) What I do know of is that, in conjunction with the Folklife Festival, Smithsonian/Folkways put out an excellent disc called Heartbeat: Voices of First Nations Women. It's an excellent sampler. They are also on the strikingly good Robbie Robertson disc of a few years ago. (I have it on tape but can't seem to put my finger on it.) Closer to the original - I like the Molly's This Is My Round better than Hat Trick.
