Though i have only had it for a couple of days, i have to say that i really like it. More of a move away from her earlier jazz standard stuff, this is definitely a pop/rock album. (with a prominent sticker on the front that says "FILE UNDER: ROCK/POP" i of course found it stuck in the ghettos of jazz vocals). There are certainly jazz undertones (especially evident in the way Holly vocalizes her words and a few specific song instrumentation) but on the whole the songs reflect a definite move away from the standards of earlier, to a rock and pop song feel that TEMPTATION showed. from covering Joni Mitchell (who hasn't these days?) to a couple of songs by mary margaret o'hara and several songs that feature looping and programming, Holly could be breaking ground into a new range of audience, without alienating her old one. A clever move, but who knows if it will work, since everyone knows how hard it is to get out of a ghetto. stand outs for me include the first track "i've just seen a face", "onion girl", "World seems to Come and Go", "River" and "I told him that My Dog wouldn't Run". "River" being the Joni Mitchell song. "I told him that my Dog wouldn't Run" is not a jane siberry song (though the title could easily be something that Jane would write) and "onion girl" has nothing to do with tori's "cornflake girl". Though i have to admit that onion girl used as an analogue makes a lot more sense literally than cornflake girl does. but go figure, its like apples and pineapples isn't it? they share similar names, but that's about it. So my recommendation is that everyone run out and get HOLLY COLE'S "Dark, Dear Heart" CD. oh yeah, the packaging is really nice too. Great use of typography. (for all you design fiends). Same person who designed her live ep/CDrom package. and finally i had a bit of an ecto sighting. i was visiting my friend stephanie who works at the St. Louis Art Museum Gift Shop and who would come on the instore stereo system, but Susan Mckeown's Jericho song. i was pleasantly surprised by that one. Apparently it is on some celtic compilation or something like that. anyway that was a nice surprise. the second surprise came when i was talking to my friend at the shop, and after i expressed my surprise and approvement at the musical selection, she asked me "have you heard that folk singer with a guitar...." "um that narrows it down, what does he/she sing?" "oh i forget her name, but my friend Jane played it to me all during the road trip to indiana. she has that one song, about christians and pagans...." she was talking about dar williams of course. so that is nice to know that dar is getting known outside of the ecto world, and by people who don't normally listen to folk music, nor ecto stuff in general. This is coming from someone who told me on my holiday mix tape that i made last season that it was too "woman with guitar-ish" for her taste. ah well. back to the grind. irvin ps. who has heard the new IVY album? thought or feelings toward it? the new IDA CD is fantastic by the way. run out and get it if you like mellow indiepop stuff. make sure to see them on tour with LOW (who have an ep coming out in nov.). has anyone got the new TSUNAMI? and in that thought, new Lisa Loeb in november (lisa played with the IDA gang, way back when). also new His Name is Alive, Vanessa Dao, and new Hanson in november. you are all excited by that last one, i know you are. I, for some odd reason, didn't let my conscious brain realize that, yes, Vonda is on the show (sorta), but it finally took this weeks TV Guide to drill it in that i should watch the show because they listed Vonda as one of the 10 reasons why they love Ally :) so...hey! Just when you thought there was no one on earth who hadn't heard Sarah's latest by now... I went into Future Shop, the Canadian equivalent of Best Buy electronics superstores but without the CDs (here anyway), to pick up some blank tapes. While there, I spotted some mighty nice Altec computer speakers so I asked a sales rep to let me hear them. The guy fired up a boom & crash disco drum loop with no instrumentation that made the speakers sound great, but I wanted to hear some real music. Of course he had none, so I went out to my car, brought back the CD pack, and chose Surfacing because it has such good production and full instrumentation. The sales rep was bewildered to get a multimedia presentation instead of the audio he expected, so I took control of the mouse and hit 'Play' on the CD menu. Well those speakers sounded so damn good that about 10 people soon crowded around to hear, and before I knew it other sales reps came by, only to be just as startled as the first as I clicked back over to the multimedia screen by request. I was barely able to make my escape with Surfacing in hand, after first explaining to everyone what this was we had been experiencing, and explaining it was available across the street in the mall. Ahh technology. It looks like Sarah is about to get a virtual job helping the wiz kids at Future Shop sell computers for the holidays. :) Dan - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DAN STARK - Windsor, Ontario, Canada - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SPAM BAIT - pyramid@ftc.gov jccheezum@uspis.gov enforcement@sec.gov fraudinfo@psinet.com net-abuse@nocs.insp.irs.gov admin@localhost abuse@localhost - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Oct 1997 21:10:27 -0700 From: "Larry J. I've been told (thanx woj) that they've been brought up before here, I'm glad to know that. I saw them last sat. nite at a local bar here and I can't recommend their live show or the latest CD _Hat Trick_ any more highly. Goldmine gave it a great review a few issues back. Here's a bit of it: "Feisty Nancy McCallion is seeped in folk balladry, but she revises its themes to show women who'll step outside society's bounds, sometimes-but not always- paying a heavy price. [...] Broken dreams are the stuff of her writing. Fortunately, ebullient instrumentation keeps the mood dancing despite her characters' chafing at the bit as their lives go nowhere. The Mollys' music strips away the illusions as they tango through the heather." Their web site, for more info on the band and for their touring schedule is http://www.mollys.com - (I do wish they'd put some sound snippets up there, oh well) They're doing the rockies and vancouver areas now. In the summer when it's 110 here they do the east coast. Lead singer/songwriter Nancy McCallion and her good buddy Catherine Zavala (who to my surprise did the majority of the singing the other night, sounding amazingly like Nancy, and g a w d can she play that mandolin!) front this quintet. Nancy plays acoustic guitar, penny whistle, and a mean harp. They meld an infectious, get-up-and-dance-your-ass-off blend of Irish/Mexican/Applachian/Cajun/Eastern European European folk-dance music, sounding quite natural. They rocked the joint from 9 to 1; sunday was a 6- tylenol day for me, but oh well, it was worth it :). I think _Hat Trick_ is the album to start with, tho' I actually enjoy their other two a great deal. The first CD _Tidings of Comfort and Joy_ is out of print, but if anyone has an interest, email me and I'll try to find you a copy here in Tucson-I've seen it from time to time in various stores. _Tidings_ has more Irish traditional covers than the others (tho' "la llorona" kicks ass. :) The second one, _this is my round_, marked Nancy's real emergence as a serious songwriter; she wrote 12 of the 14 tracks, some together with Catherine. Ballads, jigs, waltzes, rancheras to Pogues-like rantings, these are all the influences that are The Mollys.
