The Dublin Booksellers gig was the first time I had seen a Susan/Lindsay show since I caught them at Fast Folk Cafe in August of '96 (while some of you were catching Happy at the Bottom Line). I must say I wish they'd do them more often, as both times the results have been amazing! Like Meredith, I was utterly blown away by the version of "Jericho" they played, with just voice, tin whistle, bodhran and dumbek. It was absolutely brilliant, and I hope I get to hear it again someday. Of course, the rest of the set was great as well. Seeing that "Bold Orion" crossed off the set list after the show was a bit disappointing, as like both Meredith I think it was one of the best tracks off the original version of _Through the Bitter Frost and Snow_, but Susan said she might try to work it into the set for the next Chanting House show at Fez (10/22) so I'll keep my fingers crossed. Having said that, I don't know which of the other songs I'd have wanted to see dropped to make room for it. It was a great mix of tracks from the new cd, some Chanting House stuff and other assorted excellent material. As always, I'm trusting a copy of the set list rather than my memory. Wise Woman Blues When All the Songs Were Sad Let There Be New Flowering Christ Child I Know, I Know Coventry Carol Winter King Blue Moon Wheels Don Oiche Ud i mBeithil Mighty Rain Jericho I Sing of a Maiden Auld Lang Syne Through the Bitter Frost and Snow ----- She's Leaving Home The new _Through the Bitter Frost and Snow_ cd is really wonderful, but I'll take the time to babble about that in detail later in the week. The show Saturday at the Towne Crier was great as well. It was a Chanting House lineup I hadn't seen before, with Susan, Michelle and Greg "Whirlygig" Anderson, and they were amazing. I'm repeatedly impressed by the ability of all the various lineups to produce so many different great arrangements of the songs in the Chanting repertoire. To be honest, I thought it was one of the best performances I have seen Michelle give. Her playing is always great, but Saturday night it was brilliant! Greg was excellent too, and I was much more impressed with his performance this time than I was when I saw him play with the Chanters at the Bottom Line in March. I think that in large part this was because he plays rather softly, so the combination of a better sound system and the lack of drum and bass allowed me to really hear him play this time. Here's the set list... Last Tuesday's Paula Cole show at Denver's Paramount Theater (the biggest venue she's played solo here, btw -- what a difference from the time she played a tiny coffee house in Boulder for a $2.00 cover right after Harbinger was released) was the first stop on this current tour. This tour is complete with candles on stage (yes, the show is about over when the tapers burn down:), a *full* band -- last tour she had a guitar on some songs, but it was mostly her on piano and clarinet, and Jay on drums, and an amazing amount of energy. She had the audience going -- the folks in about row 20 and back stood for the entire show. (I was in the fourth row -- we stood at the encores; we were more sedate.) Interesting tidbit: There was a little delay in the middle of the show due to a technical problem. While that was beign worked on, she took questions from the audience. They started with the basic "Are you referring to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania?" to one asked by an accountant type: "Did you save your 1996 income receipts?" Hmmm. And I won't give away anything about the final encore, as it was a bit of a surprise. Regarding E-town: I saw last night's taping -- quite a combination: Paul Winter and Solas. (Listen for the encore -- Brazilian/Celtic music!) And the much-rumored E-town cd should be released in a couple of weeks. Artists include James Taylor, Ani DiFranco, and Lyle Lovett. That's all from Boulder/Denver! "syncopated" or "stacatto" are the best words i can come up with to describe how this version sounded. the melody was flattened out enough that the rhythm became the focal point. tres cool. and just one minor correction on the towne crier setlist: she played two songs during the encore. the first was "bush and briar" (or whatever the correct title of that song is). woj n.p. altan -- blackwater n.r. dan simmons -- the rise of endymion ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Oct 1997 19:34:57 -0400 From: biscotti and borscht Subject: Re: E-town also sprach Silme@ix.netcom.com: >Regarding E-town: I saw last night's taping -- quite a combination: >Paul Winter and Solas. The ecto-friendly radio station (KIWR) just received Happy's entire catalog, and all discs are in rotation. Yes!!! This afternoon I was able to hear a song from Warpaint. The Nields are due in town Wednesday. I managed to win tickets from KIWR, and plan on going solo. Plus, they will be doing something on KIWR - - be it an interview, or live, studio music - as well as a free in-store performance/signing at one of the local Border's. I will be there, supporting one of the best bands in the land. KIWR is also playing Holly Cole! The station just keeps getting better and better. I received a new disc in the mail, Mary Lydia Ryan's latest (first?). This is nice. I truly like "Farewell Ophelia", and I'm still getting through the first listen. I really like it! So, next time Happy is in Omaha, be sure she stops in and play's at KIWR. ;-) Matt Bittner np: Mary Lydia Ryan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Oct 1997 22:06:55 -0400 From: mmatthews@loudoun.com (Mike Matthews) Subject: More birthday list stuff With any luck, the birthday announcements will come out in a timely fashion, and come from right here at smoe.org.
