Joined by the legendary Buddy Miller (!)(who most recently has been touring with Emmylou Harris), Patty opened the 50 minute set with a new composition entitled "Illusions"(?). The new song (a least for this reviewer), featured Patty's signature vocals and acoustic guitar with Buddy on electric guitar and background vocals. Ms. Griffin who is a recent resident of Nashville, mentioned that she was a bit "rusty" in front of the audience since she has been in the "studio" working on her new album. The neatly tailored setlist featured Buddy's sensitive electric guitar throughout, with highlights being "Cain", "Nobody's Crying", "Christina" (based on a dream about Christina Onassis) and "We Are Water". The set list was as folows: "Illusions", "Poor Man's House", "Cain", "Nobody's Crying", "You've Changed", "Sweet Lorraine", "Christina", and "We Are Water" for a closer. The enthusiastic crowd would not let Patty leave without an encore and she responded with a solo version of "Every Little Bit" from her debut release, "Living With Ghosts". Wow, I'm surprised Mike hasn't posted about this yet. ;) Friday night was the release party of Susan McKeown and Lindsey Horner's new CD, _Through The Bitter Frost and Snow_, which took place at a tiny little under-construction theater space called Dublin Booksellers (which is owned and operated by Irishmen, but contains no books). Lindsey played bass, guitar, bass clarinet, tin whistle, and an ancient bass recorder (or, as he called it, a "fliven" ;). Susan played guitar and bodhran. Jeff Berman accompanied them on various types of percussion for some songs too. It was great. They did quite a bit from the new CD (though "Bold Orion" was scratched off the set list, dammit :P), as well as some old Lindsey-and-Susan favorites like "Blue Moon" and the mind-numbingly amazing "She's Leaving Home", which was the encore. I'd have to say the highlight of the show for me was the version of "Jericho" which consisted of nothing more than bodhran, dumbek, and tin whistle accompanying Susan's singing. It was incredible. There were copies of the album for sale at the show, and Prime-CD should supposedly be getting their copies to fill phone orders this week. Call now! It's a great disc. Lots of different musical styles, great musical arrangements and accompaniments, and over it all Susan's wonderful voice. There's some traditional stuff, some songs Lindsey wrote and some songs Susan wrote. Definitely a must-have for the winter music collection. It was definitely an ectogather in the audience -- myself, woj, Mike, Paul Blair, John, Sam, Hillary, and Nick Hill were there (I hope I'm not forgetting anyone). A nice way to spend an evening after a particularly hellacious week. We had a good time hanging out afterwards, too -- if you're ever in the Village and in the mood for *killer* dessert (and good Italian entrees), go to Three of Cups on the corner of 1st Ave. and 5th St. They serve the apotheosis of chocolate cake there (and apparently the tiramisu is out of this world, too). No biscotti with borscht, though. ;> (long story) Last night Mike, woj and I made our way up through the lovely foliage to Pawling, NY and the Towne Crier Cafe, where Susan and a new configuration of the Chanting House (Michelle Kinney on cello and Greg Anderson of Whirligig on guitar and bouzouki) were on the bill. We met up with Chuck and Joe and their friend John, and had a good time. Peter Mulvey opened, and did a very short five-song set interspersed with really random and hilarious between-song banter. I had no idea what to expect, since I've never been able to get past his name (I keep thinking of a certain Seinfeld episode) and thus have tended to avoid his music, but I was pleasantly surprised. He's a really good guitar player, and has a nice voice. Susan, Michelle and Greg did a great set of old and new Chanting House material. Between the two shows we saw this weekend the only song to be repeated was "Jericho", but it was so totally different both times, I don't really think it counts. :) If woj and I survive our move, we may go back to the Towne Crier to see Susan Werner on November 1. If you've caught any CLB performances lately, you'll know that late last year a major musical breakthrough occurred in the form of a toy piano she bought at a yard sale for $16. Although she'd never played any keyboard before, she began banging out songs written on this toy piano that are truly inspired. I'm a huge Brian Wilson fan (especially circa Pet Sounds/Smile era 1965-67), as is CLB. On "Pet Sounds" Brian strived to write "teenage symphonies to God" & it seems that CLB is maybe writing "symphonies to her Mom" with similar extraordinary results. Listen to "Aquamarine","She Won't Even Try(aka The Skip Song)", "Family Tree" or "Waited So Long" to understand what I'm talking about. Anyone who was deeply effected by the "Pet Sounds" LP will be amazed at how those feelings are surfacing again through this new material. Anyway......Cindy Lee wrote this (below) to her webpage message board a few days ago. :-) Have I told you that last monday I visited the home of Brian and Melinda Wilson? Melinda has become a good friend of mine and she invited me over to their Beverly hills home to play her some of my new songs. Brian Wilson as many of you know is one of my favorite musical avatars. Songs like In My Room , Surfs Up and others can only come from those way higher Beatrice/Dante spheres. Ya Know. So I played some of my songs for Brian and Melinda. Wow. Brian heard the Skip Song. And was totally into it.(The skip comes from a Beach Boys song on their record BB's Love You) Half way through the song he said"Unbelievable" and then at the end he said "That totally blows my mind". How many times has Brians music blown my mind? I cant count. This was a truly inspiring visit for me and Im sure gushes of new songs will emerge from the gaggles of feelings.---Cindy Lee Berryhill Since I've hyped these songs so much here, I was also wondering..... Were the "Future Folklore" tapes ever mentioned or made available to Ecto members? Neal? Dan ? If not, I'd be happy to supply a production master to someone who'd be willing to set up a free tape tree for the others here who'd want copies. I haven't the time to do it myself. Among lots of other great Cindy Lee, Elizabeth Hummel & Steve Poltz material, they contain early versions of several of the above mentioned new CLB songs. If there's interest in this, let me know. Hi, I've been lurking on this list for about half a year now, basically because of the occasional Happy Rhodes info. Well, it's about time now to say hello. I've found the Project Lo album "Black Canvas" here in Germany, at Saturn in Cologne (which is probably Germany's biggest CD store), in the Jazz department! This is the first time I've seen any recording with Happy on it over here. "Mercy Street" is a very well done cover, but the real highlight of the album is "Perfection". Happy's vocal arrangements turn this almost into a genuine Happy song, and I think it would feel right at home on Warpaint. back to lurk mode ciao, Rolf ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V3 #47 *************************
