I was so lucky to have been asked to write about the concert for the the student paper, so I got in there for free. Not that I wouldn't have paid if I had to, but it was nice for once to do something constructive to help out this fabulous band. I was there for quite some time before the concert started, and attended the whole soundcheck, which was quite an enjoyable experience in itself. After the technical problems they had in Trondheim - They played there last Wednesday, and it was in the middle of the Student's Week where lots of things are happening. The night before VB was going to play there was a show in the same location, and when they did rig the whole thing down the mixing desk dropped to the floor. It caused the delay of more than an hour - not a very good start of a concert. Back the this soundcheck. It looked like they were having a lot of fun. At one time Sundgot (the guitar-player) did get pretty annoyed, and the other people did ask what was wrong. He said : I can barely hear myself on the monitor, but don't worry I kinda like it down here alone. Anyway - they werent very structured and needed 2.5 hours to get everything right :) I had a short talk with Anne Marie before the show - got my CD autographed (She actually did hunt down all the other bandmembers to get them to sign ... They are just such an amazing bunch of nice people), and I also gave her a copy of Warpaint and told her about Ecto. She told me it looked very interesting before she ran away to rest some before the concert. Ok, to the concert itself : They did start out with one song from Lucia (damn, I have to ask them for a setlist soonish), and as always they start reading the crowd. They sounded just amazing from the beginning, but I think people got a shock when they realized that Velvet Belly just were going out "slow" to see what the crowd could take. And then they began pushing and pushing putting more and more energy into their performance. Everything worked perfectly. You could see the happy expressions on their faces - the smiles, the jokes. They were just having so much fun. The most amazing thing was that the highlight was the last song they played, so the concert did end at the top ... Velvet Belly has really grown to be maybe the best liveband of them all. I just hope that you all will some day have the opportunity to see them perform. I have never seen anything like it. Velvet Bely got something else in addition to good musicians - Anne Marie Almedal. She is able to do the whole show alone. Her aura on stage is impossible to describe. She looks like she is made for the stage, every eye in the audience could hardly move away from those eyes of hers. I talked to some people afterwards who said that they had never imagined her being so beautiful - and that is true. Photos don't do her any justice at all. Just after the show I dumped into the drummer and asked him som questions, which surely will interest you. They are concentrating on getting recognition in Europe at the moment, so the US market has to wait for now, but they are working hard to accomplish their goals. So he did hope that they would someday get released in the US as well. Though Europe will come first. And the wonderful things didn't stop by that - One of the people arranging the whole concert did invite me backstage. And ended up having a more than 2 hours conversation with the band. They got this amazing music taste (not very strange considering what they are doing themself). Anyway, I did tell them quite something about Ecto, and gave them the address to smoe.org, so maybe one day they will join the list. Would be kinda cool :) I'm still in awe, and cant fully understand what I've experienced. *hugs* Yngve oh, btw their new t-shirt is pretty cool :) - -- n.p.
