Stuart Myerburg replied to METH: >He hung himself in his parents' home almost a year ago. I believe it was >last October. I'm curious as to the fate of the band too. I would assume >they are going to continue on, but haven't heard anything. well everything that i have read from here and there say that the band is on hiatus for now. so i was just wondering if anyone had more reliable information. Rumors are bounding back and forth about EMMA touring with Tanya Donnelly (now that she has released a new album SONGS FOR AN UNDERDOG). On a KITCHENS of DISTINCTION page, they also listed a collaborational project with MIKI from LUSH in a band called FRUIT. (dig the name). and there was some rumors of a collaboration with watshisface from MY BLOODY VALENTINE (or maybe it was just that i read he had to borrow either EMMA or MIKI's guitar to create the sounds he wanted for his new release, despite the fact that he owned something like 16 guitars). anyway these are all rumors, i was just looking to see if there were hard facts floating around. and yes Chris did hang himself last year. Really sad new indeed, i was saddened, as i had followed the band's music since the early SCAR/MAD LOVE days, and really loved the music they put out. ON another note, i was the one who compared PJ HARVEY's music to KINNIE STARR, but really it wasn't me, it was one reviewer in a music magazine that said it (either BUST or BITCH magazine, i forget which). or to misquote them further, "Kinnie Starr sounds like a hip hop ani difranco with a little PJ HARVEY thrown in". in listening to the album, i can hear slight strains of PJH, only so much in the vocal qualities (think PJH in her DRYER/DEMONSTRATION demos, or the 4 track demos release). I haven't really given it much listen to. as i said earlier, i have been too preoccupied to give it a chance. a definite DIY feel about the CD though. ON the other hand, i have been preoccupied with the new IDA CD, which is fantastic. i have yet to get the new TSUNAMI CD, but IDA is IDA. Everytime they release a new CD (okay so they only have 3 out so far, but still) they add another band member. so now they are up to 4 band members. and the exploration and evolution of the sound is really nice. I hope they tour and come to st. louis.... and finally i went to the cindy lee berryhill/joy eden harrison living room show. i thought that BOB would post about it, but he is probably too busy editing the tape he made (trying to figure out how to get certain noises and sounds off of the tape that mask the music). I probably would have really enjoyed the show if it wasn't for the fact that there was a certain person there who was either completely stoned, or completely drunk (possibly both) who distracted from the first half of the performance. Now normally this might be a slight annoyance in a bar, but it sort of gets drowned out by the hubbub, and can be ignored. NOT when you are in a living room, and there are only 10 people in the audience, and there is no way to distance yourself from anyone. on the other hand, after he calmed down, the rest of the evening was rather nice. SPECIAL thanks to BOB for putting the whole things together. and for CLB and JEH, who performed for us, despite the fact that there were only maybe 10 of us there, and one of us was incredibly LOUD and OBNOXIOUS. i could rant and rave about that, but i shall refrain, because once i start, i won't STOP. I have ANGER issues i am working out. true. CLB was great though, and her music has an energy that really was conducive to the living room and the intimate space. JEH was a little more moody in sound, and enjoyable, if not a little more somber in attitude. Either way i strongly encourage anyone who has a chance to see them in this living room tour. quite special. and finally K's CHOICE are not from the US. they are from the BENELUX area for sure, and i am pretty sure they are from BELGIUM. Or that is to say, they are not from Holland or Luxenbourgh (are there any bands that i would know of from Luxenbourgh?) so that leaves Belgium. Sarah (the lead singer) definetly looks like she could be dutch or belgian though. they have two albums out though, and for whatever reason they were written a lot about in the gay/lesbian press papers (advocate, out, etc) before they released their breakthrough single, I'M NOT AN ADDICT. Perhaps it was the duet Sarah did with KD LANG at some benefit.... and that is all. looking forward to the new SUNDAYS album. I told myself i wouldn't be buying any new music until i move, but that resolution lasted all of two weeks. ha! irvin Forum for Contemporary Art 3540 Washington Avenue St. Louis, MO 63103 314/535.4660 314/535.1226 (fax) forum@inlink.com September 5th to October 25th, Dawoud Bey: Portraits 1975 - 1995 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Sep 1997 15:39:25 -0500 From: neile@sff.net (Neile Graham) Subject: My Scarlet Life news (Forwarded) Hi, everyone-- Here's some My Scarlet Life info. - --Neile >Date: Tue, 16 Sep 1997 01:05:35 -0400 (EDT) >From: Kliktrax@aol.com >To: Kliktrax@aol.com >Subject: Mysterious music for heavy-petting in cemeteries? > >A recent review, and IOWA dates. > >"My Scarlet Life is sultry mesmerization. Overall, the show was *great*! Dar sounds absolutely wonderful with a band and much fun was had by all. It was the nearly the first show for them as a band (they said first, but I'm counting that outdoor thing in Boston not too long ago) and there were a few gaffes, some of them quite amusing, but mainly things went smoothly. Dar played a couple of songs by herself, a few with just some of the band members, and some with all of the band members. The band consisted of Dar, Richard Shindell on guitars and bvox, Stephanie Winters (of the Nudes) on cello and bvox, a drummer and another guitarist who mainly played an electric. Stephanie was the hands down winner for most valuable bandmember, as her cello (whether bowed or plucked) was the perfect accompaniment to Dar's songs and her backing vocals were very nice as well. Richard was great also, though his guitar playing occasionally got lost in the sea of three guitars (especially since the guy on the electric was much louder). His backing vocals were awesome. The drummer was good, but the drums were just too loud imo. During the early parts of the set Dar was singing more loudly than usual, but things seemed better as the set went on. I think that when they play on larger stages the added separation between Dar and the drum kit will help things. Then there was the guitarist. Most of the time he was good, though I think he was mixed a bit louder than was needed, but on a few songs he seemed to be completely superfluous. He'd do nothing during most of the song but play a few scattered notes which sounded like the sort of thing that might be played be someone who had no clue about the song. There weren't even enough of them to describe it as noodling. Despite my few complaints, overall I thought Dar was much better with a band than without. "Cool As I Am" finally sounded the way it was meant to sound live, the encore of "February" with just Dar, Stephanie and Richard was truly amazing, and Dar did an *amazing* cover of Richard's "The Ballad of Mary Magdelene". The one song I was especially looking forward to hear with the full band that they didn't do was "Ocean," but there are two more night so I still have hope. Anyway, if you've seen Dar live before and loved her, or even seen her and been just a tiny bit bored, I *highly* recommend you see her with the band! Oh, and Richard's opening set was stunning as usual, though far too short (only 5 songs). I think that most of the people in attendence didn't know who he was, but the applause got louder after every song he did and I saw lots of people carrying around newly purchased Richard Shindell cds after the show. A guy at the table next to me was so impressed he bought all three of Richard's cds. :) Now I'm looking forward to tomorrow night's show...
