Anyway, to the main point of my missive - anyone here going to Jewel's next London show at the Bloomsbury Theatre on 19th October? I'm about to ring up to attempt to get tickets for my wife and I (boy, that still sounds strange!). The Bloomsbury's quite a nice little venue - I saw Sarah there last time she was over, happy memories. Talking of Sarah, I'm still struggling with 'Surfacing'. I keep sticking it on the deck waiting for it to take off and do it's thing but it won't for me. Not that it's a bad record, just the almost immediate spark that FTE had isn't happening this time around. The song is about losing someone close to you, something many of us can personally relate to. Very Well - --------- In my mind I tend to think of second best When I shouldn't And in my nights I wonder What makes me so scared When I shouldn't be And in my tears I taste Just what reminds me of it and I swallow hard. And in the darkest black When I can't see very well... (chorus) I hear you laughing I swear I hear you laughing But I cannot see you Very well. In my dream I picture me Telling you What I've been up to Catching up what we've missed What we never should have had to live through And what you faced And the cards you had to play Very well (chorus) I strain my eyes to try to visualize your face But I can't see you very well I need to see you Got to see you want to see you Beg to see you please Let me see you Do I have to die to see you? Then you lay down beside me And wrap your arms around what would have been around me And you say hey if you smile It doesn't take as many muscles Then I hear you laughing I swear I hear you laughing And I can kind of see you, no I really do think I see you No I most definitely can see you, I can see you Very well, I see you very well, I see you very well. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Sep 1997 10:04:26 -0700 (PDT) From: Richard Holmes Subject: 'Til Tuesday / Aimee Mann (redelivery) Original Date: Tue, 2 Sep 1997 16:28:26 -0700 (PDT) So, I'm now listening to "Everything's Different Now" by 'Til Tuesday. It is "ok" - though not something I'd run out and buy right now (though on second listening I like it a bit better). I got it out of the local library - along with Bel Canto's Magic Box, and some other stuff (Pixies, Michelle Shocked, Frente, ...). Too bad some of the cds are deliberately scratched (some tracks on Bel Canto were unplayable because someone scratched F__K on the cd). Anyway, how does Aimee Mann compare to 'Til Tuesday? I remember seeing 'Til Tuesday do the "voices carry" song which was so popular way back when (back before I had kids or even someone I'd consider having kids *with*) - she was very charismatic, and I enjoyed her playing - the guitar player was not very impressive, and was full of himself, and tossed a pick out to the audience, and the two women lauged and said "Dive for it, man! (hee hee)" like he was such a dork. Anyway, she was great live, playing that bass and all....... - -Richard. @ \@/ Richard A. I was a huge 'til tuesday fan in their heyday. I used to follow them around before their first album came out, seeing them up to 3 times in a week! Aimee Mann's solo work is more guitar oriented than 'til tuesday's. Of their 3 albums, _Everything's Different Now_ is the one that most closely compares to her solo work. The first 'til tuesday album was funkier with more keyboards and electric guitars. Mann's solo albums are almost Beatlesesque in their sense of melody and song structure. And yes, she was an amazing live performer (I actually loved the whole band... I had a huge crush on Joey Pesce, the keyboard player) She really slapped that bass around and did some awesome funk bass playing. My biggest regret about her solo career is that she's dropped the bass and plays guitar almost exclusively now. Michael n.p. Dar Williams - The end of the summer n.r. Sent this to the old address. Here's a repost to smoe. Neile and everyone, As I understand it, the software that does this is still relatively recent, since about January of this year. As more and more scumbags buy into this software, which by the way is being resold by spammers looking for their cut, I suspect the problem will increase rapidly. I just read an article about the main perpetrator and developer of this crap, and unfortunately it appears as though he is making a fortune at everyone else's expense with it. So far, I think the main source of mine has been the DAT Heads mailing list archives, as I have seen the same ads show up in my mailbox and on that list at the same time. I suppose it's only a matter of time before the ecto list gets raided. In fact, since I saw a piece of spam mail show up here today, I suspect many of us probably just had our addresses collected by whatever found ecto@ecto.org. While I doubt there's much any of us can do about it at this point, I am taking some steps to reduce my vulnerability as much as possible. I don't post to usenet very often, but I have changed my newsreader's return address info to REMOVE_danstark@mnsi.net. I have also decided to remove my e-mail address from my signature file, replacing it with some other addresses that I hope will produce some results for the spammers. :) Not much I can do about my e-mail FROM line, but at least I've minimized the number of occurances in my posts, so it's only in the header now. It looks like that, along with Eudora mail filters, is about the only recourse. Best! Dan Neile Graham wrote: >Hmm--this makes me think. I don't know if there will be staying power in her albums, but at the moment they are beautiful, and reminiscent of my wonderful trip to San Francisco. which i will be moving to, hopefully in 6 to 9 months. on the other hand my soundtrack for the entire trip was the RED HOUSE PAINTER's SONGS FOR A BLUE GUITAR which i think has made it into my all time top ten. i can thank my friend renee for loaning me that CD. she won't be getting it back soon. if at all. someone asked about HOLLY COLE and what she had available. she has FOUR CD's out right now. IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT (which is actually a live 8 song ep, and multimedia CD ROM) is her latest. before that is TEMPTATION which are covers of TOM WAITS songs (i think they are tom waits songs. i might be wrong, but they are all covers of one artists). Before that is DON'T SMOKE IN BED which has to be my all time favorite. and her first album was BLAME IT ON MY YOUTH. a quick check at her "official website" which is worth a look by the way (www.hollycole.com) shows that she has a canadian/japanese release only album that predates BLAME IT ON MY YOUTH called GIRL TALK. it was also recorded live with a two track single microphone. i can't comment on that one, but if you must have only one album by her i would get DON'T SMOKE IN BED which is fantastic (okay so it was her first album i got so i am biased) someone else asked about MAGGIE ESTEP. her first album had it's ups and downs. her spoken word pieces were probably most effective than her actual songs that she put on the album. she is friends with BRENDA KAHN by the way (or at least they acknowledge each other on their albums) so that might put her in some context. I would probably seek out her first album if you like her second ( i don't have her second album so can't comment) since i have heard that most people like her first album better than her second. other places to find MS ESTEP would be on the VIDEOTAPE called NO ALTERNATIVE put out by the RED HOT AND BLUE organization that raises money to fight AIDS. MAGGIE is featured doing a spoken word piece. she was also featured in an MTV spoken word UNPLUGGED showcase a couple of years ago. where you can track that down, i don't know, since i don't think they are on sale (unlike other unplugged shows like 10K maniacs and such) in conjunction with her new album (latest album whatever) maggie also has a book out (a novel i do believe) entitled DIARY OF AN EMOTIONAL IDIOT. what relation this has to that track on said album of the same name, i don't know. i haven't heard much about the book in the trade journals (except for a blurb about it in some wretched magazine like DETAILS, that basically said it wasn't all that great. like i trust DETAILS reviews. HA!) so no opinion on that. other things i have on high rotation is the finally DOMESTICALLY released BEAUTIFUL SOUTH CD _BLUE IS THE COLOR_. about bloody time the US got their act together. also a lot of SLOWCORE stuff like LOW, SPAIN, RED HOUSE PAINTERS, VELOUR 100, and the like. can anyone suggest anything else for me to explore? i have yet to check out IDAHO or FUCK, but both have been recommended to me. need to pick up the new IDA album as well as the new TSUNAMI, but at the moment i am putting a hold on CD buys since i have am trying to pay off my debts to move. but i am sure i will slip up here or there. glad ECTO is back. where else can i ramble like this? love irvin Forum for Contemporary Art 3540 Washington Avenue St. Louis, MO 63103 314/535.4660 314/535.1226 (fax) forum@inlink.com September 5th to October 25th, Dawoud Bey: Portraits 1975 - 1995 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Sep 1997 14:17:08 -0400 (EDT) From: "jeffrey c. burka" Subject: Re: 'Til Tuesday / Aimee Mann (redelivery) On Tue, 9 Sep 1997, Richard Holmes wrote: > So, I'm now listening to "Everything's Different Now" by 'Til > Tuesday.
