A big bunch of us saw EfOH open for Happy at The Bottom Line. I think the general consensus at the time was that the band was okay, but pretty much forgettable, but that their fans were obnoxious twits. One of 'em, in fact, bad-mouthed Happy during one of the early songs of her first set, saying (loud enough for her to hear, apparently, as she made some comment when this guy's group of people departed): "Is it me or does this chick suck?" Personally, I found it humorous that I'd driven from DC to NYC to see a Happy show, and got stuck with a local DC band as the opening act. ;-) > Great to see Ecto back!! Yeah! C'mon, c'mon! Did you order from A&B Sounds? I hear they've been moving, so quite a few of their recent orders have been delayed. Jeff W., didn't you say your order there was waiting for them to get more stock of _Path Of A Body_? Maybe that's the holdup here too. We have an order pending from A&B Sounds that includes the new Sara Craig album, and I'm starting to get more and more impatient. Argh. >It only took a week and half for >the Drumke CD, and two days to get Dar's EP with Shindell's >Nora on it (what the hey, the 800# was in End of the Summer). Interestingly enough, he (and the woman who was sitting next to him at Jane's taping) had the exact same seats for Emmylou Harris and Daniel Lanois! After watching the Sessions broadcast last night, I am now 100% certain we're going to be quite visible when they show Jane's performance. Sigh. :P Ellen reported: >That Saturday was the first time I'd seen Eddie from Ohio, and I was >impressed. That band was my personal find of the weekend. Initially, >they reminded me of the Nields, but since the Nields played later that >day, I was able to realize that both groups are very distinct. Hmmm... personally I think the Nields are far superior. But then again, my only experience with them was the same as Jeffy's, when they opened for Happy, and their fans really turned me off. I don't remember much about the performance itself, save that I thought they were pretty unoriginal and boring (and for one song especially, *way* too overtly Christian for my tastes). >It was a joy to hear Catie Curtis with a band. Jimmy Ryan played >mandolin with her, as he has been recently, and two of the Nields's >Daves joined on drums and bass. Wow -- that must have been amazing! I'll hold you guys responsible if... :-) I don't know about Chris, but I'm pretty confident you'll fall in love. :) I'll be able to give you more of an idea of how she is with the band in a couple weeks once I've had the chance to experience it for myself. And, as an added bonus Richard Shindell will be opening, so be sure to get there early! Yeah, he's a guy ( :), but he's got such a nice voice, and his songs are the kind that just reach into your heart and squeeze. I was going to go to the gym but I thought I miss ecto so much let me turn on my computer etc and by some hope maybe some mail and YES! :) I have had so much to write about and no outlet to put it in lately. I recently got alot of music some new some not. For my birthday I went to Tower Records with my friend to pick up some cds for myself. I picked out Bel Canto-Magic Box and Holly McNarland-Sour Pie. I picked Bel Canto because I have heard good things about them on ecto. I love the album. I can listen to it over and over and over. My boyfriend loves it also. He's surprised how I can get music that I never heard and it's good because when he does it the opposite happens. And I got Holly McNarland because I like the song Elmo on the Lillith Fair tape and I saw a video called Numb on much music. I liked the way she sings. But I realized I have seen that cd really cheap several times in used cds but at those times I did not know who she was and no one from ecto seemed to talk about her. But the cd I got is an ep and I like it alot. I went used/promo shop till I drop shopping a week ago in the village. It's rather exhausting what I do. I go to about 5 used cd stores and search and search for stuff of my list of what I want. I also buy stuff that is really cheap and heard there name but I don't know anything about them (or they were on the lilith fair tour). I bought: Jonatha Brooke and the Story-Plumb ($2.99 new cassette at Sounds), Garrison Starr-Eighteen Over me (.88 promo at sounds), Mari Boine-Radiant Warmth (.88 promo at sounds), Kinnie Starr-Tidy (.88 promo at Sounds), Heather Eatman-Mascara Falls (5.95 I forgot the name of the store but it's on St. Marks Place...I saw her for Required Listening a year ago.), Grey Eye Glances-Eventide (1.85 promo forgot where but on St. Marks), Ugly Beauty-The Sweetness (1.00 promo at Venus Records), Foxfire soundtrack (1.99 at Disc-O-Rama promo), Alisha's Attic-Alisha rules the World (.88 promo at sounds), Merril Bainbridge (3.99 promo I forgot where but it's on St. Marks). So far I like the first few songs from Jonatha Brooke but I have to give it more chances. I haven't given Garrison Starr, Mari Boine or Kinnie Starr much a chance yet. I am really enjoying Heather Eatman. I like the way she sings and the stories she sings. I really like the Grey Eye Glances cd. I also like Ugly Beauty, foxfire, and Alisha's Attic. I accidently bought Merril Bainbridge confusing her with another Merril recommended on ecto. However I am pleasantly surprised it's actually good. She does a version of the pet shop boys song "Being Boring". I also saw 2 "Sessions on West 54th" shows. On Wednesday I saw Ani Difranco. She was alot of fun although hard to see from the forth row I was in (the seats are on one level). I could see the back of Andy well and Jason very well. Ani had blonde braids with pink on the ends. It looked great. She did 2 new songs one mentioning sun glasses. I think she was very friendly to the audience. When she came out she shook some of there hands or touched them which I never saw anything like that with her before. She played for about an hour and 1/2. She had to do 2 songs over. Last night I saw Fiona Apple. They started an hour late thanks to Beck's crew arriving at the studio an hour late to set up which delayed us. So everyone was tired. I had a good view of Fiona but I was also by the cables they kept on moving which was a little annoying. Fiona plays great but I find when she speaks she acts like an idiot or something. Everytime she opened her mouth to say something pure stupidity would come out. I find it kind of odd that she came write such deep lyrics but when she talks she makes no sense at all. I am also seeing a few concerts that are coming up. I'll be seeing Ani Difranco at Central Park, Dar Williams at Town Hall, and Sarah McLachlan at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden (I hated that I let ticketmaster rape me a few times through the phone but I did it for my bf. I didn't know about the concert until 15 minutes before they went on sale. I think they are still on sale because ticket master is selling them online. There is also a show for October 15 (Wed) ) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Sep 1997 14:32:38 -0400 (EDT) From: Quickling@aol.com Subject: Hanson... I had been wondering what had happened to it -- I guessed that the domain had been erroneously eaten by Internic, as has happened to so many. I'm now comfortably ensconced in a small apartment in Gaithersburg, MD. The town is somewhat dull, but there's a good Borders a few blocks away. The big thing I've been involved in was a somewhat mammoth concert of John Cage's music the members of Silence (the John Cage mailing list) put on at UMCP Friday night. (Those of you in the area may have seen us listed as a pick hit event in the City Lights section of the Washington City Paper.) We had, by rough count, 16 performers doing 14 pieces over the course of 3.5 hours (much longer than we expected -- we drastically underestimated how long it would take for the percussion ensembles to set up). Over 100 people showed and packed the room -- we had people sitting in the aisles and in unused bits of the performance area. I'm *very* pleased as to how it went, especially considering that we put it together in less than five weeks and did almost all the organising by email! I'm also in a new ensemble with some of the performers in the event, yet another vocal ensemble, named "Comma". Getting together with these musicians is one of the main reasons I came out here. There seems to be a thriving interest in New Music in the DC area, but it's not very organised. We already have some gigs scheduled, and may be doing some recording in the next few weeks: I have a piece that I wrote for four baritones (which we are) several years ago, which is intended to be recorded without rehearsal or previous discussion, so this may well be perfect for the recording sessions. On other notes: this may be old hat to some, but I recently heard a gloriously beautiful cover of KaTe's "This Woman's Work" on an Unplugged EP by someone named Maxwell (of whom I haven't heard otherwise). It's a must-hear.
