I had the pleasure of seeing the Continental Drifters at a really nice club here in Chicago (the Cubby Bear for those of you familiar) on Halloween night 1994. It was a spur of the moment thing - I found out that Vickie Peterson was in a new band and said "hey what the heck". Needless to say I was quite pleasantly surprised by the quality of their performance. Sort of a cross between The Band, X, CSN&Y and maybe a dash of Mazzy Star and Cowboy Junkies for flavor. Lots of twangy, tasty guitar... Suzy Cowsill (hope I spelled her name right) played acoustic guitar and tambo.. I think Vickie is a bass player no? (as my face gets red for this escaping my memory! at one time I was a big Bangles fan!). Vocal duties were traded off between Suzy and a male musician in the band (I am unfamiliar with the guys in the band - other than one used to be in the dB's) with some additional vocals from Vickie. I guess one would classify them as "folk rock". Been meaning to pick up recorded stuff by them - do they have a recent CD out? They're one of those bands I had almost forgotten about!.... you never can tell what's gonna turn up in ectoland! ^^^^^Oh yeah... wasn't Suzy Cowsill friends with / sing on a CD or two from Redd Kross? I've been thinking for some time now about picking up a CD by Moon Seven Times and/or Love Spirals Downward. Even though I can't find them in the local CD shops. Guess I'll have to order something. Past comments likening (is that a word?) them to Cocteau Twins, Bel Canto, etc., piqued my interest. Question being, of course, which ones to buy? I'm aware of two M7X albums, the self-titled debut and "7=49". Did they ever release their 3rd album last year? After reading some comments in the archives and checking out their web page, I'm leaning towards "7=49". Of course I could always buy both, but EWS being what it is, if I don't like them and only buy one, then I'll only have one I won't listen to. Looks like a coin flip to me. As for LSD, they have 2 albums also, "Ardor" and "Idylls". Are they both full-length CDs or is one of them an EP? From what I have read about them, they have a "darker" sound than say the Cocteau Twins. Are they a bit more "accessible" than the Twins? My, just loaded with questions, aren't I? Well, sorry if much of this has been discussed before, but some ectophilic nods one way or the other would be appreciated. I definitely like _7=49_ better than _The Moon Seven Times_. It seems more lively to me and more varied in it's sound. If you're looking for Twin-ish sounding stuff you might also like Area, a band M7X's singer and guitarist were in in previously. I would sugest Area's _The Perfect Dream_, though it'll probably be impossible to find. > As for LSD, they have 2 albums also, "Ardor" and "Idylls". Are they > both full-length CDs or is one of them an EP? Both full length. I probably listen to _Ardor_ more frequently but I would recommend either one. > From what I have read > about them, they have a "darker" sound than say the Cocteau Twins. > Are they a bit more "accessible" than the Twins? LSD sounds more like the Cocteau Twins (circa _Treasure_) than M7X does. I guess LSD is a little gloomier than than CT (despair must be a prerequiste to get signed to Projeckt records.) As for accessiblity, if you are used to one band, you'll understand where the other is coming from. I'd like to get full entertainment value for my dollar, but my desire to keep my job far outweighs that. Go fig! Second, I went a hunting for "Hello" by Poe. First stop Disc Go Round. I figure if I can save a few bucks buying it used, every little bit helps. No luck. Not even my second choice (Blues Traveller "Blues Traveller"). Next stop: Mainstream Records. Nadda. Zip. The only store in the city of Milwaukee with Happy Rhodes CD's in stock, but alas, no Poe. I was dejected. I felt really sucky. Then when all hope was thought lost, I found it at Earwaves. They didn't have any on the racks, but the owner did have a promo copy in his personal collection and sold it to me for $6.95!!! Pure bliss. It pays to shop around (My mama told me...). As a special side note, something caught my eye at Earwaves. A double vinyl album of...you guessed it....the artist of the hour...Tori's "Boys for Pele". Only $11.95. So the question is, should I pick it up and has anyone else seen this around? Well, that's all for now. Aren't you thrilled?? Later all.
