A Bit Annoyed, Mike Also, for those of you who want the latest scoop on Tori's activities in a timely fashion without the chatter of RDT, the brand-new ToriNews mailing list might be for you. Here's a bit of info: *TO SUBSCRIBE*, please e-mail johns@chihuly.com with a subject of "Subscribe Torinews", and put your e-mail address in the body of your message. The purpose of the list is to disseminate information about Tori Amos...concerts, live appearances, TV/radio gigs, press/articles/etc. Or if you're trying to find someone with tickets to a particular show, or someone who taped something, use it for that as well. PLEASE DO *NOT* use this list for discussions of what Tori's music means to you, etc. There is already a mailing list for that (Really Deep Thoughts) and I'm not trying to compete with that list, which does a great job at what it does best. I understand that there are different interpretations of "news" about Tori, and I will try to be as understanding as possible. However, *please* respect the intended nature of this list. If you do not, you will be unsubscribed. If you have a question about something you think you want to post, *please* ask me first. Many of our subscribers pay for their messages, and are on this list precisely because it doesn't have the chatter that some other Tori lists do. - --Sue Trowbridge trow@access.digex.net +++ trow@charm.net www.interbridge.com +++ www.access.digex.net/~trow/ Pick hit: Aimee Mann, I'M WITH STUPID ------------------------------ From: Stephen C Ellis Date: Tue, 6 Feb 1996 13:14:35 -0500 (EST) Subject: Non Happy Rhodes (Inn Mission) On my first post to this list, I thought I would pass on something of interest to the list. Behind the counter, amid other home videos, they had one of great plays in the career of Pele the soccer player. As fate would have it, if my memory serves me correctly, Pale's team, the New York Cosmos, was owned by Warner Communications, the same outfit that owns Tori's label. Something tells me that this coincidence of the corporate umbrella may have saved someone a lot of headaches when it comes to the intellectual property properties of the name Pele, and its use on Tori's album :-). OTOH, it may be just as well that _Hercules_ and _Xena_, with their shitload of mythological references, are not Warner productions; else we'd all be at risk of seeing Tori cast in a guest-starring role as the goddess, whose name I've already forgotten--the latent dysfunction of the digest format--who gets turned into a tree :-). I've heard about the insults and bad reviews, I read irvins editorial, and anthony's reply, and, well, I've even bought the album and had a listen! 1. I don't see how the interesting arrangements and unconventional vocal style can be criticised on this album any more than it could have been on the other albums. Maybe I've heard too many B sides that have blunted my sensitivity to them :) 2. I afraid that I agree with Anthony's arguments more than with irvin's, and I don't feel that an artist should be constrained to the kind of arrangements that some other producer feels to be appropriate. If Tori wants to produce her own stuff, and it happens to be a different style to her previous work, and indeed to many other artists' work, then surely there can be no fault picked in that alone. It was said (from memory) that she was parodying herself ... surely her image is her image, partly because it's _her_, and for her to retain her own identity is something we should reasonably be able to expect. 3. I like it :) It's taken a little growing, but there is some absolutely stunning stuff on there. Maybe it's worth pointing out that when I first bought LE, I wasn't that impressed, and it sat on the shelf for _years_ before I came back to it. I got into Under the Pink (through Cornflake Girl), and then went back to it, and really like it now. Anyway, I've got 'Father Lucifer' in my head at the moment, so I'd better do some work in a futile attempt to flush it out! Remember, the mega stores select the books they carry based on what they "know" you will buy. We spend lots of time trying to get books that the mega chains won't carry and to carry subjects that they won't carry in areas like ours (buckle of the bible belt). Last year (or the year before?)
