I know he has some other fans on this list so... Today I wanted to look up lyrics to "God Will," but couldn't find them anyplace. Then I hunted around for a Lyle Lovett webpage, but noticed a severe lack of Lyle Lovett on the web. At least no one hip website. Which is what he, of course, deserves. So I've started putting one together. So far it's going pretty well. But I can't seem to find any lyric archives that are still open, and gosh there are a lot of lovett lyrics to type in for the webpages... A friend is working on Lovett's "I Love Everybody" album's songs. And I'm sure I can knock off a good chunk of lyrics. But I thought it worth asking... if any of you have Lovett lyrics already typed in, I'd love to hear about it... (and borrow them). I'm also interested in anything else Lyle Lovett related that I could use for the page. And if anyone wants to volunteer to type in a song or two, I wouldn't object either. Just bug me so I know who's covering what. No sense duplicating. Thanks! I'll announce the page as soon as it's a bit more ready. :-) (There isn't a Lyle Lovett list is there? Gee... I could start one...) Best, ........................................................ I'm sure most of you have heard the interview or know its contents. I'm sorry if this has been discussed before but I haven't really been paying much attention to the mailing list this past year due to other preoccupations. Anyway here's the excerpt from the interview: Interviewer: Is it (your work doesn't seem to be dated) because your work is slightly alternative, if you could use that phrase...different from the norm....Is that why perhaps that it doesn't date? Kate: Are you saying that I'm a weirdo or something? (jokingly) (Then Kate goes on to explain Kate's next reply is 'I don't know about to be different but to certainly try and do my best, and I think if generally there are a lot of areas that people have already explored, there's a natural tendency for you to want to look in areas that aren't quite so covered, do you know, I think that's a natural thing to want to do' The above (and another interview excerpt which I remember reading on rec-music-gaffa around the time TRS came out where Kate felt embarrassed of her early work, even 'The Dreaming') makes me wonder if Kate Bush, now in her thirties, wants to discard her image of being 'alternative, different, strange, unconventional'? This frightens me as it these 'deliriously bizarre but at the same time extremely evocative' songs which attracted me to her music in the first place. Any ideas or comments? We are raffling off 2 (count 'em) two, Happy Rhodes signed "backstage crew" tour laminents. Now as you all know there wasn't much of a tour but we had these things made anyway. Perhaps they're collector's items, perhaps they're junk. It's a laminent, worn around the neck, with a the picture from Building the Colossus and a strip that read "crew" . It comes on a lovely five cent chain. Possessing this at a show might get you put to work, but probably not past security. Anyway, we're trying to raise a few bucks for AWOL. (Animals without love) A local Woodstock rescue and placement service that is always hurting for funding. They do an incredible job. "They".......it's really just one very special and loving man who works his tail (excuse the pun ) off. If he rescues a stray or hurt critter, he brings them to the local Vets and winds up paying the bills. he's always doing this which is amazing. His caring is unbelievable. We'd like to help out. It's Happy's #1 cause. Entries are $2.00 each and the drawing will be March 1, 1996. Deadline to receive entry is thurs Feb 29, 1996. contest is open to anyone. The only other place this is advertised is in Rhodeways, so your chances of winning are pretty good. It's pretty much an Ectophile thing. Rhodeways says that half of the money goes to AWOL, but we're gonna give it all. Let's face it, it ain't gonna be thousands of dollars. Include name, address, phone and we'll (Happy and me) call Friday night and congratulate you and send off your laminent. There are 2 of these things. More entries more chances. No judges just a hat and Happy's hand. One laminent to a name God that all sounds so horribly commercial. Please forgive and Good Luck. We'll tell you how many people entered and who won and all that on the mailing list. Other news: Floods, Blizzards, Fireballs and Earthquakes, but Ms. Rhodes keeps plugging along on the new record. from what I've heard, it's way cool. She's still writing, but we've already got 4 or 5 on tape and waitng for vocals. Looking at early summer for the album paired with lots of live dates. Initially we're thinking of a Border's tour. Perhaps a trio, perhaps solo and then some evening shows in the towns she's in. We're actually setting that up now. We'll post a list as it gets closer. New act: Hans Christian. Cellist in the world ambient vein. Very intense musician. Has played with Toni Childs, Robbie Robertson, Paul McCandless to name a few. Album is called Surrender and release date is April 16th. It's instrumental, kind of Dead Can Dance meets Andreas Wollenweiter meets Gabriel's Passion. Very honored to have him on Aural Gratification. Quiet City: Carl Adami and Harvey Jones. Killer techno record !! Extremely well recorded and performed. Some of you may know their work from "Conformity" on AG Vol 2. Release date is April 30. There are plans for Harvey and Carl and Happy to do a remix version of her new album for the fall/winter of 1996. Should be interesting. Happy also just sang some tracks for her friend Rob Aceto on his new record on the Alchemy label. David Torn producing. Due out also in April. This'll be hard to find in the stores as Alchemy is one of the first internet-only labels. We' try and get all the facts and post 'em if there's any interest. In the works: My solo record hopes to see the light of day in June. Also a compilation album of artists using a device called a JamMan due out in May titled Unavoidable Delays.(hans christian, Bartlett, Caren Lyn, david Torn,Happy Rhodes, Jon durant, Bon Lozaga, and others) It's all about a technique called Looping. Produced with the help of The Lexicon Company manufacturers of the JamMan and other fine stuff. That's about it for now. Stay warm, stay dry, stay safe. I just got Elastica from a friend who'd grown sick of it. Finally I can comment! "Car Song" is fairly typical, at least more typical than "Connection." I'm not much for "Car Song" but I really like "Stutter" which seems to be getting a good chunk of airplay these days. "Stutter" may be even more typical of the rest of the album. I've only spun the disc a couple of times, and the non-singles are mostly ok. I like the album. Much like Darling Buds - if Darling Buds never went to college, worked as a hooker and went grunge. In other news... I picked up Ruby's _Salt Peter_ on the strength of Charley Darbo's passion for it (and for only $3 used!). It's good. Like Poe but nastier. I also grabbed _Burned_ by Electrafixion. Out of the three new discs, this is the one I'm spinning the most. I know next to nothing of Echo and the Bunnymen, but I really like this thing. The singles are buzzing, the non-singles are OK. But it's the overall sound that I love - coherent, transportive. God! I hope they come around again soon. I know I'd love to hear this music in concert. - - Mike Michael Doyle maeldun@i-2000.com =================================================================== "I shoulda listened to Deniz..." ------------------------------ From: Sue Trowbridge Date: Wed, 31 Jan 1996 15:10:40 -0500 (EST) Subject: Patti Rothberg I've completely flipped over an advance copy of a new album called "Between the 1 & the 9" by Patti Rothberg. I don't know anything about this woman, and I have no idea when the disc will be released (it's on EMI), but listening to her sing turns me into a big molten pile o'goo. She has a really lovely, sweet, pure voice. Musically, she reminds me a little of Jennifer Trynin, but a little bluesier & she's definitely a better singer. She doesn't bat .1000 on the songwriting, but there are still several excellent tracks, and the album shows tremendous potential IMO. The show in question is on February 15th, 9pm - 1am, at the 400 Bar in Minneapolis, MN. Cover is $2. Former Boiled in Lead frontman, great singer-songwriter, Todd Menton opens. To be followed by the award-winning duo, The Flash Girls. Concluding with the fine band, Bedlam Union. They're incredible, good celtic rock type stuff. Fun. It's basically a gig to celebrate the Fabulous Lorraine Garland's birthday... she's one half of the Flash Girls (fiddle/vocals) when she's not busy being assistant to Neil Gaiman. As it's a special gig, I wouldn't be surprised if other guest musicians didn't show up. With this crowd, that would mean possible cameo appearances by Steven Brust, Lojo Russo (and other erstwhile members of Cats Laughing), various Boiled in Lead persons, and other fine folks. No guarantees, but it seems plausible. Even without guest stars, should be a fine evening.
