We are pleased to announce that 10,000 Maniacs have been signed to a five-record deal with the David Geffen Company. The band, which halted their own production on their upcoming CD in August because of health concerns of Dennis Drew's newborn baby, will resume work on the record this spring. They expect an early fall release date for the new CD, on the Geffen label. There will be extensive tour plans for the summer; those dates and will be released later this spring. The band will also be doing at least one show in London, England, this summer! You'll get a postcard next week confirming this information and detailing new 10KM merchandise available now. It's to be broadcast this Thursday at 1:00 pm on WXRT .... somehow they had a contest for "invitations" to this show but I *really* missed out *argh!!!* - hell I had NO IDEA that this was coming up! (that'll teach me for listening to CD's and not the radio while at work!). I would also venture a guess that Chicago is one of the cities where Tori will be making an appearance at the BfP "listening party" mentioned here a few weeks ago (altho I can't remember for the life of me where it is supposed to be in our fair city!) Last time I heard her do an on-air here in Chicago she talked about how she loves to come here because of the taffy apples....and deep dish pizza (Yes this is true folks..) I do plan on running a tape for this and contributing it to the tape dubbing project (if it comes out okay) (unless y'all complain about it and stuff...) it is pretty damn cold here - by the way.... Oh yeah.. I picked up my own copy of BfP this weekend - my first listen to it - - the word that came to my mind first and formost was *OWCH!* them's some pretty big wounds there girlfriend!!!. I think it's brilliant. and yes.. a departure from her previous work. But the *way* she sings....the emotion... is so very very very raw and painful. maaaaan.... especially on "Hey Jupiter" and "Blood Roses".... different vocal effects in places made her voice sound very un-Tori like. (maybe less compression). and while I can't explain what it means - in feeling it's like experiencing someone having a profound emotional or religious experience (like the emotion you see displayed at funerals... to try and explain... you could almost hear her getting "choked up" in spots) As for the photos... well.. we've already analyzed them to death so I'm just going to say I think they're ALL tastefully done.... and the only thing I can see in her expression is .. well... sadness. But I'll spare y'all more analysis (thanks, Amy!) and just say toss my name in the hat with those of you who really like this work.... It may not be "accessible" or even something I can listen to all the time (because of the level of emotion)... but .... oh... Tori........ *sigh* at least when she gets through this whole ordeal - her next project will probably be so upbeat.... maybe a CD of Gilbert & Sullivan tunes (giggle giggle! i'm kidding folks....) so offbeat that we'll be saying "gee what a departure from her previous stuff".... that's what makes her so intriguing! thinking of spring..... She played viola on 10KM's last tour with Natalie (and also on eMpTV Unplugged), and is perhaps best known as part of the duo John and Mary ("John" is John Lombardo, founding member of 10KM, who has rejoined the band as well). She sounds remarkably like Natalie Merchant, and with her viola adds a wonderful dimension to the band. For an idea of where 10,000 Maniacs are going with their sound, listen to their 1985 album _The Wishing Chair_, then listen to John and Mary's albums _Victory Garden_ and _The Weedkiller's Daughter_ immediately thereafter. Glom both sounds together, and you've got it. While I like Natalie a lot, and think _Tigerlily_ is a great album, I also ***love*** where 10KM are going with their sound (_The Wishing Chair_ is my favorite Natalie-era 10KM album), and I think they've got a lot of continued success in their future. First of all, I just want to say that the news that 10,000 Maniacs (as Mike so charitably put it, "wonderfully without" Natalie Merchant ;) have signed a 5-record deal with Geffen just made my night. It seems that Geffen has gotten into the business of saving people's careers lately -- not a bad thing, considering their choice of artists (Aimee Mann, 10KM). I cannot WAIT for the new album! Waaaah!!! Speaking of Ms. Merchant, there's a rather interesting interview with her in last week's issue of US Magazine (the one with the chicks from "Friends" on the cover). There's also a little picture of Tori and a squib about BfP in there too, for the die-hard collectors among us. And on the subject of magazines, the B-Side interview with Heather Nova has some glaring errors in it, which is rather disappointing -- B-Side has always needed a proofreader BAD, but I thought they were above needing a fact-checker, too. :P (I'm going to write them a letter and inform them of the existence of Heather's first album, _Glowstars_, a fact of which they are obviously completely unaware. Sigh.) Laurel wondered: >Oh! If anyone sees Richard Shindell in concert, I'd love to hear >about it. I know he was doing a show with Dar that I think meth >mentioned she might be attending. And so he did and we did, on Sunday in Hightstown, New Jersey. It was a *wonderful* show. (If it's any indication, the show was so good, woj even enjoyed it! ;>) Richard Shindell came on first and opened with an Irish seafaring song ("Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore"), and the set just got better and better from there. I found it interesting that even though I don't own either of his recordings (not counting the song on the _When October Goes_ compilation), he only played one song that I hadn't heard before, and that was a brand-new one. Just goes to show that WFUV is *really* into him, I guess. :) He also played the Mary Magdalene song, and I said to woj "Y'know, Tori should cover that song", and woj replied, "She should get him to open for her." That would be perfect -- a lapsed seminarian Buddhist opening for Tori. Hee. Anyway, I really enjoyed his set. I already knew I liked his songwriting sensibility (I really love his imagery, especially in songs like "Blue Divide" and "Fishing") and his voice. I'll be keeping an eye out for his albums now, too, and will definitely see him again if I get the chance. Dar was wonderful, not surprisingly. The only songs from the new album that I'd heard before the show were "As Cool As I Am" and "Ocean" on WFUV, and "February" at her Required Listening set last May, from which I already knew it was going to be a great record and therefore a great show. I think she would benefit greatly from some additional musicians onstage, but she put on a great show nonetheless, and was really funny and generally all-around cute. The highlight of her set was the end, when Richard Shindell came out and played guitar on a song from _The Honesty Room_, the name of which I am completely blanking on, then they both came out for an encore and did a beautiful rendition of Shindell's song "Nora", which Dar has been performing live for some time now. It was great. I'll definitely see Dar whenever she comes around again. I picked up _Mortal City_ on the way in, and they even had some "Christians and the Pagans" EP's for sale if you bought an album, so I got that too. It's a much more consistently interesting and listenable album than _The Honesty Room_, imo, and the instrumentation is a lot better. *Where* did she get her backing musicians and vocalists?!? John Prine, Mark Egan, Mark Shulman, Eileen Ivers, Lucy Kaplansky, Cliff Eberhardt, Katryna and Nerissa Nields... it's an all-star lineup. Amazing. I think her more fully-arranged songs work better than the more "folky" numbers, mostly because it seems like she hasn't quite figured out how to make her musical accompaniments perfectly fit all of her lyrics yet. I think she's been writing poetry and lyrical prose far longer than she's been writing music, and it shows. Case in point: "The Pointless, Yet Poignant, Crisis of a Co-Ed", which is a song about Wesleyan Angst at its worst (a fact which Dar confirmed when I spoke with her afterwards, as she explained exactly which on-campus incident inspired the song). Basically, if you don't know much about Wesleyan University you won't find it nearly as hysterically funny as I (or Valerie Nozick ;>) do. It does contain a bit of musical brilliance in the middle that had me laughing so hard I almost drove off the road when I heard it for the first time last night, but other than that it's kind of musically boring. Kind of like if Christine Lavin went to Wesleyan and wrote a song about it. But that's a minor quibble. :> The title track, "Mortal City" is one example of the lyrics and the music working perfectly together... I get a distinct _Twelve Monkeys_ feeling from it, thanks to the lines "the people are dying and nobody cares" and "one city got the plague" and Dar's explanation that the song takes place in Philadelphia... it's bizarre. It's also my favorite track on the album. Anyway, the Dar tour dates that Neal posted are probably fine, but you can check Dar's Web page on a regular basis for updates. I can't remember the URL offhand, but there's a link to it off my Deities page. :) Time for bed... more sometime, as usual... +===========================================================================+ |Meredith Tarr meth@delphi.com| |Boonton, NJ USA http://remus.rutgers.edu/~woj/meth/| +===========================================================================+ | "We are not lost in the mortal city" - Dar Williams | +===========================================================================+ ------------------------------ From: Kerry White Date: Tue, 30 Jan 1996 22:43:25 -0600 (CST) Subject: Re: this n that (neil/tori/etc) Hello, On Tue, 30 Jan 1996, Matt Bittner wrote: > about Kenny G and Michael Bolton.
