Hi ectophiles, just got back from seeing Tori play at 102.1 "The Edge" in Toronto. My impressions? Well, Tori was great as usual, but my overwhelming impression is of a bunch of screaming, gushing, teenage girls... "Oh my God, did you see? She *looked* at me ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod" or God forbid... "EEEEEEEEEEEE!!! SHE *TOUCHED* ME! EEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!" There was a girl behind me who was bemoaning the fact that she couldn't see. I thought to myself that I've seen Tori play from really close before, I've even met her on several occasions, I think I can live with letting this girl in front of me. So I asked her if she wanted to get in front of me so she could see better, and relinquished my good viewing spot. And she just said "YEAH!" and scooted in front of me, while I stepped behind a guy who was seriously tall, at least, 6'4, probably 6'6. No exaggeration, I'm 5'10 and I couldn't see over his shoulders. I never did get a thank you. She was young, and I suppose that caught up in the excitement of actually seeing the great, the wonderful Tori Amos, social niceties were beyond her. I am getting *way* too old for this... Anyway, she played "Blood Roses" and "Hey Jupiter" in the studio. The "Blood Roses" was definitely unusual since she was playing on a keyboard, not on the harpsichord as she usually does. One thing I love about seeing artists in the studio is you get a lot of direct sound... some of it is amplified, but since it's such a small room and you're so close to the performers, you hear their voices as they sing it... sometimes to the point of drowning out their instruments, in the case of acoustic performers. She was great, and she was really fantastic to the fans, even if they were a bit scary at times. She talked to everyone in between songs/interview bits, and fielded questions... even inane ones like "Is it true you used to make such and such soup for Rantz Hoosley (I can't remember how to spell his last name)?" The question that really made me cringe came from a girl behind me. I can't remember the exact wording, but basically she was asking what the status of Tori's relationship with Eric is now. And of course Tori had to sort of tiptoe around that question. I mean, a performer (especially one as intimate as Tori, who has such a young fan base) has to expect questions like that, and I'm sure Tori does, but at a certain level I think people should just respect that there are some very personal things that are none of their business. Tori handled it like the pro she is though. Someone else gave her a pair of socks, because he was sure that she loses lots in her travels. And something that should be of interest to this list: One of the questions the interviewer asked her was about the pig picture. I didn't get much of this on tape (I was being kind of blase about taping it), so maybe a Toronto area ectophile who did tape it can fill in the blank bits? ***transcription follows: *** EDGE: [something to the effect of... what's up with the pig picture?] TORI: [missed the beginning of her answer] There are so many things that weren't [**noise**], so much about sensuality and passion and woman's bodies and woman stuff and I remember a woman breast-feeding a baby and my father putting his hands over my eyes and saying, "I .." [10-15 seconds of noise, during which she talked a bit about taking her to the gay bars to perform] ...and my father has grown a lot through these experiences but when I was 13 he said "you know, I'm going to sit here and make sure these men don't pick up on you" I said, "I'm not the one they're going to pick up on, Dad." [mucho laughter] You know, it was always that thing of wrongwrongwrong badbadbad, and I really wanted to have a picture visual and Cindy and I really talked about it, I kept having these visions of me breast-feeding a pig. I kept seeing this. And I said, I know what this means to me, and people can look at it however they want, I mean, that's when I think a photograph works, when it brings up a lot of different stuff. But it was a cute little critter. It was just so cute. It pooped all over my skirt. And peed, and he was having such a time, and he just nestled in, and he did his business, and obviously I'm not, *feeding* now, so he was a bit disappointed, but he fell asleep, and it was really fun. EDGE: Well, he looks CONTENT! [Mucho laughter again] ***transcription ends*** So it was good, I'm sort of glad I went, and I sort of wish I'd just stayed home and made sure I had a good tape. If it weren't for the hordes of screaming barely-past pubescent teenagers, it would have been a really good mini-show. Apparently she's planning on doing 200 shows this tour... sounds like another horrendously jam-packed schedule, just like her Under the Pink tour. I'm looking forward to her shows in Toronto, I'm not so much looking forward to fighting the crowds of these same fans. As I said before, I'm getting too old for this. It's called Theme For Imaginary Canyon. There was another disc there, called something like Eden's Children, that may have been the same concert, even though the date was different. (One says July 18, 1993, the other says July 10.) Anyway, this is a stunning recording. I think it's full digital and straight from the soundboard. I saw the Maniacs in San Diego within a few days of this show, and I was completely stunned by the closing version of Let The Mystery Be. I'd been trying to find a decent version of it (and the one on the single does NOT qualify!), so was happy to pay the bucks for this. When I saw them, the song was played with only piano, with that eventually trickling off, but this version has violin on it too. It's great since it is like the one I wanted, but different enough not to replace the memory too. Anyway, since this is a bootleg disc, I feel it's only right to justify the cost by giving the material away like crazy. So, if anyone wants copies, let me know. (Available for trade or cost of tape and postage.) If there is enough interest, maybe I'll just send a copy in to the dubbing project. Does anyone know the actual date of the show in LA? Someone may have already beaten me to reporting on Tori's MuchMusic appearance, so I'll just type out highlights for me, and if I don't see any other posts on it in the next digest, I'll post more details. My last e-mail, where I posted about Tori's CFNY appearance, was posted from the lab, where I stopped to do some work before I came home. I checked the videotape of her Much performance, and I was dismayed to see that the video quality is horrendous. Not sure what happened, but the sound was fine, so I'll report on that. Tori and Sook Yin Lee (the MuchMusic VJ who interviewed her) talked about Mary Magdalene as they walked over from the MuchMusic studio to the Bravo! studio where the grand piano was. (I think this was the same room, and the same piano that Sarah played on a few months ago). They played the video for "Caught a Lite Sneeze", and when they came back, Tori played the "Doughnut Song." Then they talked, among other things, about the pictures. So here's some more insight into the pictures. I forgot who on the list had the insight about the dead rooster (i.e., cock), but they were bang on. That is indeed what it was meant to symbolize. But apparently the live snake is meant to balance that out somehow. And I can't believe I didn't think of this myself, but the gun image... well, if you look at it from Tori's perspective, well the picture is of her and a gun... sound familiar? I'll spell it out anyway, it's a reference to "Me and a Gun." And finally, the 'phile who suggested that we look at the pictures as a story was also right. In the end, she's forsaken the gun and instead she's adopted this little piglet. Well, I don't know exactly how much that cleared up, but it was kind of interesting anyway. After that, she played a bit of an intro where she talked about how she wasn't sure which song was coming next. Eventually the song that emerged was "Upside Down" which caught me totally by surprise, the last thing I expected was a b-side! Boy, I can't wait for her N.American tour! I was at a friend's tonight, and he has ISDN piped into his apartment, with both channels. But even with that kind of throughput (or better - I heard some clips at his workplace, and they've got multiple T1s over fibre) the sound of the audio clips kept breaking up a lot. New Lyle and Michelle. I really like both. Even though Lyle "twangs" country, I do consider his lyrics ectoish. "If I Had A Boat" is so great. And Michelle Shocked's stuff is great. The only MS stuff I'm missing is the first one (before _Captian Swing_) and the latest (availbale only through her, correct?). The fact that they wrote the music *after* viewing the movie is intriquing, as well. I might have to rent the movie, now, when it comes to video. And about the radio station, I'm becoming more amazed. Granted, they have yet to play any of my requests (granted, I've been requesting Happy, Katell, Mae Moore, etc.), but this morning I finally heard Kate Bush, and they just played a new, "rock" local band, Phoenix Rising (one I'm definitely going to check out, especially since they're female led). Haven't heard anymore about it, but a new band in Lincoln just popped up, The Trillions. It would be great if this contained members of The Millions. Seems logical, but then again logic tends to get in the way, at times! ;-) Preston Love had a *wonderful* column in Sunday's local paper. Basically, he said that the current crop of "jazz" and "pop" performers need to get a life. Turns out his son is following in dad's footsteps, and is become a "hot" improv sax player. One of the family friends was visiting, they took him to one of Preston's sons gigs (sorry, but I forget the sons name), and the relation said what he was playing wasn't true "jazz". True "jazz" to him was - as Preston put it - the new age music some people think of as jazz. Although Preston didn't mention any names, I can envision him talking about Kenny G and Michael Bolton. Gads, how I *despise* those two. My wife has been taking some of my music for a co-worker of hers to listen to (according to her, the co-worker has "unusual" taste). Well, in thanks, he sent home Yanni and Basia. I told her I would *not* listen to Yanni, and although I did listen to Basia, is wasn't all that good. My apologies to those who like these two, but my gag reflex was in high gear. Unfortunately, haven't bought any new music lately - funds are definitely lacking - but a "half price" store just bought CD's from a shop going under, and has them all priced at $8.88. What a bargain, especially since I saw October Project, and a few others to "acquire", once the funds start again. Sorry for the rambling. I'm avoiding work this morning. But I suppose from the record company's point of view, having > low-quality audio is important. Speaking of RealAudio, I think it works better for things like NPR online. I thought it was really cool that I was able to surf to the RealAudio homepage and listen to entire segments of All Things Considered and Morning Edition without having to waste time downloading. The sound *is* pretty crummy, though...while I was listening, my husband came into the room and made a crack about my $3,000 transistor radio ;-) I was really disappointed (but not terribly surprised, I guess) to find that "ordinary" people can't use RealAudio on their own homepages without paying a gigantic licensing fee. I maintain a homepage for the band the Loud Family (www.interbridge.com/loud/loud.html in case anyone is interested) which is strictly a nonprofit labor of love, and was interested in adding some sound files in the .ram format. To do so would cost over $1,000 a year!! Ouch, no thanks... Speaking of new 'net technology, does anyone agree with me that frames (supported by netscape 2.0) is perhaps the most evil development to come along in HTML? I mean, it allows a company to keep its advertising in your face the entire time you're looking at a web site!! There are two albums before Captain Swing. First, Texas Campfire Songs, then Short Sharp SHocked. > The fact that they wrote the music *after* viewing the > movie is intriquing, as well. Very little of this music is used in the movie. I think only the Eddie Vedder/Nusrah Fateh Ali Kahn (sp?) songs, and Bruce Springsteen over the credits. And older stuff not on the soundtrack. I've heard it in passing in record stores and it sounds good to me. In line with the above comments..... I saw the North American premiere of the new Brothers Quay film, their first live action effert, entitled Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream that some call Life. They haven't abbandoned the surreal just because they are working with actors! The Quays were present afterwards, and one thing they said was particularly interesting: They work with the same composer on a majority of their pieces. They just send him a note saying what the piece is based on and ask him for some music. One day, a bunch of tapes show up in the mail. They listen to them, pick out the stuff they like best, and send it back with a note, "More of this." When the return tapes arrive, they start animating based on the music. I heard the Suzanne Vega song on WXPN yesterday and really liked it. It was kind of in the tradition of _Blood Makes Noise_ off _99.9 Fahrenheit_ (to let people know where I'm coming from I really like _99.9 Fahrenheit_ but not her other albums.) The somg had a beat provided by what sounded like garbage cans and was pretty short. I wondered at the time how I could have missed it in the movie but if it was written afterward, that explains it. Does the album have the middle-eastern sounding stuff that was played in the movie on it? If it does, it might be a purchase. - - Deniz dbucak@netaxs.com http:\\www.netaxs.com\~dbucak\ "Work stinks" - The Brain ------------------------------ From: Neal Copperman Date: Tue, 30 Jan 1996 16:32:55 -0500 (EST) Subject: Dar Williams schedule Just got this today....
