At the Oakland listening party, in order to make some excuse for being indecisive and not being able to come up with a favorate track, I commented that it didn't seem to me like a collection of individual songs, in the way the other two were, but that the tracks seemed more to play the role of individual movements of a symphony. My recommendation is to sit down with your eyes closed and listen right the way through a couple of times. If you still don't like it then the interface between your ears and your brain may be faulty, and you should see about getting it repaired under warrantee. >But, I did like the pig photo. So far my impressions are mixed. Even after reading the review Neal so thoughtfully posted, and carefully sitting down to listen to the album with the lyrics sheet, I don't have a clue as to what the album is really about. But, I guess that's the enigmatic Tori we've all grown to love. Musically, as well, this album does not offer much that is immediately accessible. No real toe-tapping radio-friendly numbers, and no particularly beautiful ballads. Instead we get an amazingly complex work, rooted in its mythology, that will give people plenty to discuss and analyze. I must admit that I'd actually become quite burnt out on Tori. After reading countless interviews and seeing her in person several times, I began to think that she was taking herself too seriously--offering grandiose opinions on the state of mankind that often had little substance or rationale to back them. Despite all this, I find myself quite intrigued by the new album. Yes, it's strange. Yes, she moans, breathes, screeches and sighs, streching out syllables and generally having fits of histrionics. But despite all this, I find myself liking it, being drawn in, wanting to uncover just what it is she's trying to say. And certain moments are so emotionally intense that you find yourself holding your breath--completely captivated. The nice thing about her vague lyrics is that her striking imagery can speak at some levels to almost everyone--though I would seriously question anyone but Tori who tried to give definitive interpretations, (and to be honest, I'd probably also question Tori's interpretations). And, with her lyrics, she seems to be building her own personal mythology--usually symbolism, musical snippets, and lyrics borrowed from previous songs, and others. Tori fans will definitely like the album--but I certainly don't see her winning any new fans with this effort. All the critics who have called her pretentious and affected will have more fuel to add to their fire, but those who sit down with the album, study it, listen closely, will be rewarded, but most likely in ways that they can't explain very well. I even called stores before hand. Everyone I spoke to reacted like I was speaking a foreign language. I looked in Tower, The Wiz, Sam Goody, Disc-o-Rama and Record Runner (where they specialize in that kind of stuff). No luck. So, this limited edition is truly a limited edition. I ended up buying the cd where I started off at. I bought it at Tower for $11.99. I don't think any of the stores I went to had it on cassette. IMHO I think that is not fair to those who can't afford cds. I also picked up Sarah Mclauclin (cant spell her name) album Touch on cassette for 7.44 (nice price). I listened to it 2 or 3 times and I like it. I remember hearing the song Vox alot in the late 80s. I didn't really care for her album Solace. I found the song "Touch" to be very interesting. I don't know what you call what she was doing but there were no words. It sounded very pretty. I forgot my opinion of the Tori album. I have only listened to it maybe twice. Of course I like Caught a lite sneeze. I really liked Professional Widow. Horses sounded like a very pretty song. I also liked In the springtime of his voodoo. The pig pic. WEll it wasn't a total shock because of someone on ecto who warned us about it. First i saw the backcover and i figured that was what it was. But it was funny I opened up the cd on the subway! And I saw the pic. I wasnt surprised that she looked like she was nursing the piglet but that her breasts were some what exposed surprised me. This does not bother me. I am an open person. I just find the pic very odd. I like to know what it symbolizes. Does it have anythign to do with the fact that she is bitter towards Eric. She wanted kids and they broke up which means no baby=no breast feeding. But what does a pig have to do with this I don't know? And what's with those kids up against the window. What happened a bird attack them? Is tori wearing a towel over her chest on the front cover. And I find it strange that her left leg is exposed cut open from the leg. ------------------------------ From: ! I've been wanting to jump into this Tori talk but my e-mail's been fried here for a couple days (it's either burped up 100 messages from various & sundry lists or nothing...) So... I'll cut the crap and jump in then ! First off... I must put in the disclaimer that I always buy my CD's at maybe 3 stores, Tower, Best Buy (an appliance/computer/housewares & stuff + music & videos store) or a local store called Rolling Stone records (they usually have great imports, but you have to get there when they first come in) because I REFUSE to pay more than $13.99 for new CD's ($11.99 if they are NOT in an independent label like AG). Anyway... right near where I work is one of those *other* chains - the kind that only sells CD's & videos... Well.. I had no idea how OBNOXIOUS their prices were until yesterday when I walked in looking for Boys for Pele..... AT LEAST $5 more than what I would pay at any of my regular stores + the *lovely* 9.9% City of Chicago sales tax (would have brought the total to almost $20 for 1 CD!) - I quickly retreated from the store WITHOUT the CD - swearing that I would only pay those prices for IMPORTS! *ugh*... so..... needless to say I haven't ventured out to buy it yet. BUT I'm going out of town this weekend and hope to do some CD shopping so it's on my list - and from what you all have been saying - I am salivating! (By the way... I do have the import of CaLS and am quite impressed!) Now... all this talk about the "Tori suckling a pig" picture.... I saw the CD cover - and *a* pig picture (I'm assuming the one we're quibbling about is inside the CD booklet) The first thing to come to mind was T R E N T R E Z N O R Tori's friend and fellow musician. Tori has referenced Nine Inch Nails in 2 songs I can think of off hand... and they are friends to boot (anybody hear the "Tori tried to cook chicken for Trent at the Manson house only to have the recipe fail miserably.." story?) Plus... not to mention.. Tori did recording for BFPE in New Orleans = which is the place where Trent records as well. Now.. if my miserable memory serves me well.. doesn't Trent have somewhat of an obsession with pigs? His song "March of the Pigs" and that horrible video for a song (I can't remember the title - I think it was for "Hurt" or something like that) where he shows stop action video of a rotting pig corpse. I'm NOT a big NIN fan - but the more I understand Tori the more I understand Reznor. A lot of his music is VERY angry and mostly directed at people who've fucked him over (and various other injustices) - I would guess - women, or men (depending on who he's chosing these days). People either love or hate him because he can be so very direct. Same commentary has been said about Tori. Critics sometimes put down her blunt honesty about (particularly) sexual issues. Both have been called "eccentric" in the press. Bottom line is... and remember .. I don't know Ms. Amos personally ;-) I would guess that somehow she's *got* the secret of Trent's pig fascination / symbolism. Anybody out there have any opinions on this one? In general - since the first listen of LE I've felt somewhat of a creative kinship with Tori. She has said more in a 4 minute song than I was able to say in volumes of journaling. I strive for her level of directness wrapped around metaphor and poetry in my own writing (most of the time to fail miserably) but then again ... ".. you don't need my voice girl you have your own.." ;-) yeah ... i forgot (she giggles) But what I'm getting at is I suppose I *understand* in a way why this album may differ from her previous work.... this is a different wound open for her. This is the kind where the person you love cuts your heart out and sticks it on a stake in the backyard.... all before you realize what is going on. Then it's over and you're left with the pain and a big hole in your chest. *** art is the child of pain. *** Just as she proved to us on Little Earthquakes...... which probably gave inspiration to more abuse / rape survivors than mountains of therapy and psychobabble self-help books. Perhaps her "fuck you, Eric" songs are not going to be for everyone..... but I can't wait to hear what she's got to say. Few women can be so angry at men (and the pain of relationships) and do it as eloquently as Tori can (and there *are* a few... Polly Harvey is another one) Something else I've been pondering.... Several interviews I've heard speak of her problem in what she felt was "stealing power" or "stealing energy" from the men in her life. Anybody else out there read the book "Celestine Prophecy"? (James Redfield)... sounds like she took that book to heart.... or at least some of the philosophies presented therein.... Okay.. I'm stretching on that one... but it did seem really strange to me. ============================ One last thing....Does she.. or does she not... have a ring-o-thorns style tattoo on her right upper arm.? I saw a photo of her in (I think it was "Q" ) magazine - taken in New Orleans - well before the CD came out. You could clearly see it. The photos on the cover of my CaLS show no tattoo. Was it faked? or was it a recent acquisition? Not that it's a big deal - but it's kind of an amusing thing nonetheless. And you all can give me 1000 whacks with a (something not toooo painful please) for missing her on SNL * THWUMP!* = = = = = = = = = = Hey Valerie!..... you were bitching about lack of snow here in Chicago... didn't you know that we get most of our snow in March and April - and the amount of snow we get is directly proportionate to how warm and sunny it was the previous weekend - and how much money you spent getting your car washed and waxed (and taking the heavy duty plastic off the windows, packing away your boots etc.) (in hysterical laughter) Just you wait... we'll get the mother-of-all snowstorms on the Friday night you want to fly out to SoCal or Albuquerque or someplace warmer than it is here ;-) + - + - + Somewhere in the ecto cosmos there's a thread about Jon Anderson. I personally like the first (could it be "only" I'm not certain) "Best of Jon and Vangelis" CD that has "State of Independence", "Italian Song" and "Friends of Mr. Cairo". When he's "on" Jon is angelic and inspiring. I too sometimes feel that his talent was / is somewhat wasted in Yes - but I AM still a big YESFAN so there's not much of a beef. He's got a recent CD out I've seen mentioned on the Yes list that is supposed to be primarly instrumental, ethereal music about angels. One of his most recent solo CD's is influenced by the works of Carlos Casteneda called "Deseo". I don't have it (yet) but it's on Angel records and from what I've heard - it is beautiful. Anyway.... peace, love and big orange tabbies to you all (unless you're allergic.. then you could substitute the pet of your choice; i.e. guinnea pigs, golden retrievers, etc.) Amy ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V2 #359 ************************** ======================================================================== Please send any questions or comments about the list to ecto-owner@nsmx.rutgers.edu
