Meanwhile, out yonder (henceforth defined as NOT Chicago), people are complaining about bizarre winters filled with snow and, well, _real_ winter weather. Even _Atlanta_ has had more snow on the ground than Chicago at times. Now, suddenly, in a change of direction worthy of a politician, native Chicagoans are saying that Chicago really doesn't get a lot of snow after all, and that people, other native Chicagoans, lied to me 9 months ago about the local winters. First of all, one of the lead singers - Julie - wrote the theme for the Fox show, Partners. The other lead singer - Gretchen - is in a band called Battery Acid, and they're currently working on a disc. The were originally signed to Geffen, but when they're A&R person was fired, all bands handled by that person was let go. So, they're going to release under their own label. Maybe around March. Julie is working on a solo album, but there are no dates specified. A letter from Gretchen to the site admin mentioned that they might be working on more mary's danish stuff, to come out in the future. Ahem. Just two nights ago, parts of South Dakota had actual temperatures (not to be confused with windchills) in the -30 to -40 degrees fahrenheit range. Really. Was like that for a couple of days. Subzero temperatures. From -4 to -40. (still is pretty cold, but supposed to warm up a little this weekend). This after having hardly any snow and temps in the 40s and 50s for a while. 'Course we also had tons of rain, which turned to ice and sleet and then snow. Then winds of 50 miles per hour (anyone who's driven through South Dakota knows how few trees/hills/buildings there are to block the wind). Yucky. My minivan landed in the I-29 ditch, during some of that. I was in N. Sioux City, SD for a job interview on Wednesday. On my way home I did a lovely 360+ turn on the Interstate before landing in the ditch. Eventually, after being towed, I made it to the nearest town (which was quite a ways away) where I ended up stuck... at a motel in Vermillion, South Dakota for two nights until the weather/interstates cleared enough that I could slowly get home to Sioux Falls. Not fun (just got home last night). For more thrilling details one can visit my webpage and read my latest journal entries, which should be up sometime today. Ohyeah. I got the job. Rather than summarizing it I'll just copy it as received: DAX BACK FROM THE DEAD. DANIELLE DAX makes a welcome return to musical activity this month after a four year absence following her 1991 world tour and 'BLAST THE HUMAN FLOWER' album on Sire records. She describes her long and painful period of exile as a 'Season in Hell' during which she fought for her life and sanity following the physical and mental abuse of an ex-partner. After setting up her 'BITER OF THORPE' label to re-issue her early 'Lemon Kittens' collaborations and her own solo albums, she recently released a 2-CD retrospective sardonically entitled 'COMATOSE NON-REACTION- The Thwarted Pop Career of Danielle Dax' which features her singles, B-sides and previously unavailable film music and demos. It also includes a full colour booklet containing some of Dax's many outrageous and always creative incarnations and stage sets. Now her title as one of Pop's Truly Original Talents has been re-established, the reclusive singer and multi-instrumentalist is ready to take on the challenge of the future with the release of a new self-produced EP called 'TIMBER TONGUE' on BITER OF THORPE (BOT 131-07EP). Available on CD and a limited edition of 5,000 on clear vinyl, the tracks run: 'Toygit', 'E.V.I.L. T.'(CD only), 'Timber Tongue', 'Uru Eu Wau Wau' and 'Monti' (vinyl only). The new material was recorded and mixed at Danielle's legendary 'Gin Palace' studio and features long-time collaborator and 'Shock Headed Peters' member David Knight, and Parisian programmer Pepper. Continuing her all-embracing creative accomplishments, Dax has made special 'Urban Pantheist' paintings for the EP cover artwork, to mark the beginning of a period of growth and harmony. - -------------------------end of Biter of Thorp text----------------------------- I'll have to listen to "Timber Tongue" several more times to negate my expectation filter. The absence of Danielle's multifaceted voice (except, the Laurie Anderson , Home of the Brave, hockey mask style on E.V.I.L. T.) has taken me a little by surprise. Expectation filters have a tendency to do that. I have a good feeling though, this is just the beginning of a new wave of Danielle's wonderful creations. I will be stocking all of Danielle's Biter of Thorp releases including those with the Lemon Kittens and the Sire releases through my Harmony Ridge Music web site . I understand that "Blast the Human Flower" on Sire is now out of print. If anyone knows of a CD store that still has copies new or used, I would appreciate finding out who they are. I have a list of people who want this CD. Well, I just sat through one and a half hours of television hell to see Tori Amos perform two songs from _Boys for Pele_: "Caught A Lite Sneeze" and "Hey Jupiter". The former was accompanied by a band and a backing track, including a cool woman playing tympany and other forms of percussion. Tori played both harpsichord and piano (on the bridge), set up so the harpsichord was on stage left and the piano on stage right, with vocal mikes on both. All she had to do was turn around. Pretty cool. The latter was performed with just her at her Boesendorfer. Tori looked stunning with shorter, straighter, less-red hair (looks like she's elected to go for the lightly hennaed look :), and no sign of any tattoos whatsoever. I'm positive now that the one she has in the picture on the pre- BfP promo CD that's been circulating around was just makeup done for the shoot, because it would have shown clearly even with the sleeves she had on her outfit. Makes me wonder about the ones in the other pictures I've seen, too. She sounded great. "Hey Jupiter" is a nice little song -- can't wait to delve into it on the album. Three days and counting!!!
