Yeah, I've often felt that about CDs. There are one or two second-hand CD shops downtown that look to me like they're basically fronts for fencing hot CDs. One of them doesn't even categorize their CDs in any way (no alphabetizing) and don't charge GST. (federal sales tax) The funny thing is I'm not sure how these second-hand CD stores stay in business. Vancouver's CD prices are so low that, quite often, you can buy a brand new CD for less than the second-hand price. But on the subject of pawn shops, here's a fun little story. I volunteer at the local FreeNet, and the Vancouver Public Library donated an LCD display panel to us last year. It never really worked - presumably that's why they donated it - so it sat forlornly on a shelf wearing a dusty fur coat. Then one day we get a call from a guy at the library saying "We have your LCD panel - do you want it back?" Sure enough, a quick check of the aforementioned shelf revealed no LCD panel. How on Earth did it end up at the library? Well, it turned out that someone stole our panel. Then they took it to a pawn shop and tried to fence it. The pawn shop, being a good law-abiding pawnshop, noticed the "Property of the Vancouver Public Library" sticker on it, and phoned the police. The police then took it back to the library. :) And since the damned thing was broken anyway we never even noticed it was missing... - Neil K. - -- Neil K. I did this because _F&S_ features vocals by Heavenly Bodies singer, Caroline Seaman. Well, I was surprised by one of the tracks with Caroline because I had heard it before. But it wasn't from hearing the album previously or even the song. I recognized it from the 4AD tribute album, _Thurtene_, which I mentioned here. The fifth track on _Thurtene_ is a version of Colin Newman's "5/10" performed by an entity called Red Zoo. I don't know the original, but this track is a collage of noise and samples with a dash of original instrumentation. One of the samples is of - tada! - Caroline Seaman on _Filigree & Shadow_. Appropriate... given that _Thurtene_ is a 4AD tribute album and TMC a 4AD band. I'm in the process of working on web pages, some of which I want to devote to Happy concerts, and other Happy stuff I have in my own collection. I'm very new at this web business, so things will surely change around and get better, hopefully. My URL is http://miso.wwa.com/~vickie/ I'm at a bit of a disadvantage right now because all my Ecto stuff is on my Amiga hard drive, and I still haven't been able to get any of it transferred over to my brand spanking new (well, used) PC (486-66 with Win95...Amiga was a 500 with old DOS, if anyone can help). Anyway, so I still need to dig in the archives for any posts about any of Happy's concerts. It would help me *so* much if any of you have write ups about any of them, to send them to me. If you can html-ize them in advance, that would be great, but if not, I'll get it done. Also, I know there must be tons of concert photos floating around out there, so *please* send me any you might have. I can take them prescanned via e-mail, or if I can get negatives and/or prints, I can scan them myself. I wanted to do something Happy-related that would compliment but not be redundant to what Neil, Klaus and Greg have already done, and thought of this. I hope it will be a nice addition to the already wonderful web stuff out there (**THANKS GUYS**!!) Until I get some of the write-ups in there, the pages will be useless to lynx users, but what I have already seems to work ok in Netscape and Mosaic. *HUGS*! Years ago when I still watched SNL the musical guest usually did two songs, one about a third of the way in and then one near the end. Last night Joan only did one song (about a third of the way in). I can think of 4 right now (lennon not among them) sitting here thinking about the old days. When I was in Germany 6 years ago (gosh, it is beginning to be some years now) two friends of mine died. I had met them in Germany so I hadn't known them for so long but they meant a lot to me (I haven't had that many really good friends in my life so it is really sad to loose some of them). One of them died of a heart failure - It was kinda like a decease but noone knew he had it - so one day he was ok ... the next he was dead. The second drowned in the a lake near Essen in Ruhr-gebiet. He was out rowing and it was something he was enjoying very much cause back in Thailand he had never done that before. It was in April the water was cold and the was quite windy. The boat drifted into a pole in the water and it tipped over ... his heart probably stopped cause of shock. He probably never got as far as to realize what was happening. It was nice too that he was doing something he loved to do. I still remember those envelopes with a black cross in the corner laying on the desk. The guy from Thailand I had planned to visit. I hadn't had the chance to do so cause I had been away for two weeks. Oh my, I felt so guilty - what if I had been at home and did go visit him ... too late now of course but sometimes it really hurts. The third is Jaquline DuPre the cellist. Heard her recording of Dvorak cello concerto this morning and I thought - she was so talented but lost the opportunity to perform ... She wasn't that young - but her heart died much before her body did and 42 isn't actually much of an age really ... The fourth is a legend and she should actually be in the ecto archieves so Neile ... I'm enclosing what's in a Norwegian Encyclopedia about this woman. Her name is Radka Toneff (1952-82) and as you see she only was 30 years old when she died. Jazzmusician, singer piano player and composer. She did start to study the piano at the age of seven from Hans Solum and later she finished her study at the Concervatorium of Music in Oslo. 1976 This year she started her own quintet together with A. Anderson (Bass , someone might know him cause he has played in the US some recently), J. Eberson (guitar), J. Balke (Piano) and E. Rud (drums, percussion). They played at Molde International Jazz Festival and did a TV show. 1978 Performed at Swedish TV and at some Swedish festivals 1979 Malmoe, Sweden and Montmartre, Copenhagen. Released the album 'It don't come easy 1982 A long working relationship with the Swedish-American piano player Steve Dobrogosz resulted in the quiet album Fairytales. The same year she got the Buddy-statute for her work as leader of the norwegian jazz society posthumt. She lived a short life but she will be remembered for what she did both musically and for the Jazz itself. Her musical work is just beyond words.
