I'm afraid I missed the begining of this thread. My readings of ecto have been a bit cursory of late. I do have Nine Of Swords at home though. As I recall it was published by Kicking Mule Records who are a place that mostly do teach-yourself folk-guitar/dulcimer/ukulele type stuff. It contains a couple of songs written by Nick Drake but never recorded, some covers of Nick Drake songs, and some other bits "inspired" by Nick Drake. Also a bad rendition of All Ireland sung with a particularly strong American accent that rather grates. To be honest Scott Appel doesn't do the songs justice. His voice is not in the same class, and his guitar playing, though technically impressive, is too acerbic for my taste, and doesn't really fit the songs. Overall he simply isn't capable of recreating the same mellow, haunting quality that Nick Drake instilled in his music (but then who is). I found it a bit dissapointing. But once you've got all four of the available Nick Drake albums (or the box set) and want the last little bit, then it's the only way to hear those songs. I'll check out the details and post them later if there's interest. - -Anthony ------------------------------ From: 32 flavors and then some Date: Fri, 22 Dec 1995 20:15:14 -0500 Subject: Re: ecto faux pas On Fri, 22 Dec 1995, Charley Darbo wrote: >I'm sure I'll pick up on these things as I go. The Beatles - Anthology I I really don't need to qualify this one, do I? Concrete Blonde - Still in Hollywood Well, the band is no more, but at least we now have all those hard to get B-sides all collected nicely in one easy-to-get place. Edgar Froese - Beyond the Storm The leader of Tangerine Dream revisits his solo career. Life is good. Robyn Hitchcock - You & Oblivion Rhino iced their wonderful Hitchcock reissue cake with this little number. And Fegmaniacs everywhere cheered. Sarah McLachlan - The Freedom Sessions It's not new material, and it's the only Sarah we got this year, so it'll have to do. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Playback Oh if only all box sets were this good. Happy Rhodes - The Keep Well, _I_ like the cover. And everything contained within. These are people with a variety of influences, all of which shade their work. Experimental Artists/Groups Folk/Rock Artists/Groups Jazz Artists/Groups Pop (Mainstream) Artists/Groups Pop (Other) Progressive Artists/Groups Rock Groups/Artists Traditional Artists/Groups World Artists/Groups what i'd like to do is include a brief description of the *type* of music, and a few (say four or five) of the most well-known and ecto-palatable artists in each category. so for "traditional" we might have Artists who draw their inspiration from the past, from the sound of another time and place. Anonymous 4, Clannad, Dead Can Dance, Loreena McKennitt, ?, ? what i'm asking for from you is your thoughts on which artists should be included for each category, held up as the representational epitome of that category. suggestions should be geared towards the general "ecto" taste as much as possible. i know this can be difficult, as "ecto" is a hard term to define, but then again so are most of the categories above. a general impression is all that can be asked for. some of the categories above don't particularily lend themselves to this; for example i personally find it hard to imagine a country artist being ecto... *but* there was a lot of discussion of marianne faithful (sp?) here a while back, who i've never heard but who i take to be a country artist. so she would be preferable to someone like, say, billy ray what's-'is-name. i'd also appreciate any one- or two-sentence descriptions of the musical categories themselves... i find it hard to put a finger on just what defines some of them, particularily those i'm not personally interested in. also, if you have any additions to make to the above category list, feel free to suggest them along with a few artists you feel fit the category. these genres are more or less being made up as work on the guide progresses, so there are likely gaps at this point. i'm toying with the idea of adding a "humour" category myself... moxy fruvous, christine lavin, arrogant worms, they might be giants... :) take care and happy holidays! damon _/\_ Damon_Harper@mindlink.bc.ca __\ /__ "I'm proud to be a banker... Thanks, Robert, but I find that this track on The Keep, and the 2nd track on Enya's "The Memory of Trees" are motivating me to go buy a programmable CD player (instead of waiting for the new high-density players) just so I can enjoy the rest of the disks. I can't imagine what got into her, thinking that something like "Oh, Holy Night" belonged on a non-Xmas album (yes, I know, it was released as sort of a gift to her fans), or on any album at all. It seemed so out of character! Sure, she sounds great, but I can't be the only one who studiously avoids "reverent" music regardless of the artist. At least Loreena McKennett chooses obscure and ancient songs for her Xmas works. If Happy had just sung it in Russian or something--it's the awful lyrics that bug me. But then I might feel differently if I believed that all that stuff was true. As to the track "Anywhere Is" on Enya's, I have tried to like it, really tried, but it fails on so many levels I just wind up starting with track 3 (and skipping a good song in track 1). That said, I can't recommend her new album highly enough.
